Appendix F: Surround Sound
Delay Management
These controls can be found in the console by clicking the “Settings” button and
selecting the “Surround” tab. They allow you to adjust the amount of delay added
to the playback for each individual surround sound speaker channel. You can move
the sliders anywhere from 0 to 250 ms; 0 ms means no delay. At sea level, sound
travels at about 1 foot per millisecond (ms), so if your speakers are up to 250 feet
away from each other then we’ve got you covered!
Keep in mind that these delay management controls don’t apply to software
applications that use WDM Direct kernel-streaming or ASIO, or if you are using
PureWave mode. They only work with software that uses the standard Windows
APIs (DirectSound, wave/mme, regular WDM, etc), and only with surround sound
encoded audio.
NOTE: Windows XP Service Pack 2 may change some of these settings.
