II USER'S GUIDE ELAN HOME SYSTEMS Operation Switching On and Off Off Mode Off mode should be used only if the VIA!dj is not being used for an extended period of time. There is a short wait while the unit is switched to Off mode; switching the unit On from Off mode may take a few minutes. You can safely disconnect the power cord from the VIA!dj in this mode.

The function of these buttons changes depending on which menu is currently being viewed. The available actions are shown on the bottom line of the front panel display. The VIA! Touch Panel and TV output also displays these actions as well as other actions available on the VIA!dj remote control.

II USER'S GUIDE ELAN HOME SYSTEMS Recording From a CD • Push the OPEN/CLOSE button on the front panel to open the CD tray. • Place a CD in the tray label side up. • Press the OPEN/CLOSE button on the front panel to close the tray. The VIA!dj will now automatically attempt to retrieve information about the CD from the Gracenote Music Recognition Service.

The CD Recording screen, with progress indicator will be displayed: Once recording is complete the new Album will appear in the Library. • Press the OPEN/CLOSE button to remove the disc. If you have selected a recording quality using one of the MP3 or WMA compression settings, the compression process will begin immediately.

Place a CD in the tray. Press the OPEN/CLOSE button on the front panel again to close the CD tray. Use the or buttons to select the CD Drive option. Press the Select button. Press the Play button. Note: You cannot record a CD while playing from the CD tray.

For more information about creating a Playlist refer to the section entitled Creating a New Playlist. • Use the or buttons to highlight the Playlists option in the Library menu. Note: The Playlists option is on page 2 of the Library menu. • Press the Playlists button to display the Playlists screen.
II USER'S GUIDE ELAN HOME SYSTEMS To browse Presets in the Library: Presets are simply Playlists that can be used in the same way as a Preset station on a radio tuner. For example, you may have a Preset which plays a particular Album, a Preset that plays all the Albums by a particular Artist, or a Preset that plays all the music in a particular Genre. For more information about creating a Preset, refer to the section entitled Creating Presets.
ELAN HOME II SYSTEMS USER'S GUIDE Selecting items Alphabetically You can select an item from your Library directly by the first letter of its title using the alphanumeric keypad on the VIA!dj remote control or the ABC button on the VIA!dj GUI. Use the VIA!dj remote control's alphanumeric keypad to select a Library item by initial letter: • Display the appropriate Library menu for the item you want to find (e.g. Artists).
II USER'S GUIDE ELAN HOME SYSTEMS Search Function Each category within the Library can be searched using an alphanumeric keypad screen in order to reduce the items in the current list to only those that contain a particular word or collection of characters. To use the Search function, navigate to the list in the Library you wish to search and press the Search button. Use the alphanumeric keypad to enter text and press the OK button.
ELAN HOME SYSTEMS II USER'S GUIDE Mark Function The Mark function can be used to select multiple items within a list in the Library. You can then perform a single action on all the marked items rather than going through them one by one. For example: To delete multiple Albums from the Library: • Select Library from the Main Menu. • Press the or buttons to highlight Albums and press the Select button to display the Albums list. • Use the or buttons again to highlight an Album you wish to delete.
II USER'S GUIDE ELAN HOME SYSTEMS If there are less than one hundred items in a list, you also have the option to mark all of the items in a list, without having to go through them individually. For example: To delete all the Albums by a particular Artist: • Select Library from the Main Menu. • Press the or buttons to highlight Artists and press the Artist button to display the Artists list. • Use the or buttons again to highlight an Artist and press the Albums button.
ELAN HOME II SYSTEMS USER'S GUIDE Playback Information The illustration below shows the Now Playing screen. Whenever you select an item in the Library for playback, this screen is displayed. You can also choose to display this screen at any time by pressing the Active button on the GUI or the Now Playing Button on the remote control. When you make this selection, the VIA!dj will display the Now Playing screen for the currently selected audio output.
II USER'S GUIDE ELAN HOME SYSTEMS Switching Audio Outputs The VIA!dj is capable of playing different music in several rooms simultaneously. If you wish to play music in a particular room, you must first choose the correct Audio Output. To Select an Audio Output: • Press the 1, 2, 3, or 4 buttons at the top of the VIA!dj GUI that corresponds to the desired Output. Or: • Press the Output button on the remote control repeatedly until the desired Output is accessed.
ELAN HOME SYSTEMS II USER'S GUIDE Controlling Playback Whether you are playing music from the Library or directly from a CD, you can Pause, Stop, and Resume playback as well as Seek and Skip Tracks at any time. To Pause play: • Press the button on the front panel or the VIA!dj GUI or remote control. To Stop play: • Press the button on the front panel or the VIA!dj GUI or remote control. To Resume play: • Press the button on the front panel or the VIA!dj GUI or remote control.
II USER'S GUIDE ELAN HOME SYSTEMS Now Playing Screen Options There are a number of options available from the Now Playing screen. • Press the Active button on the VIA!dj GUI to display the Now Playing screen. • Press the Options button. The following screen is displayed: Jump to Album Tracks: • Use the or buttons to select Jump to Album Tracks. • Press the Select button. The currently playing Album will be displayed. Jump to Artist's Albums: • Use the or buttons to select Jump to Artist's Albums.
ELAN HOME II SYSTEMS USER'S GUIDE Digital Jukebox Feature In the tradition of the classic American jukebox, the VIA!dj’s Digital Jukebox feature allows you to create a song list from your music collection which will play in the order that the songs were added. The Digital Jukebox allows you to add an unlimited number of songs into a temporary list, which is played back in the order you added them.

ELAN HOME SYSTEMS II USER'S GUIDE Jukebox Operational Notes: • Just like a traditional Jukebox, Tracks are added to the dj’s Digital Jukebox sequentially. The last Track you add goes at the end of the list. • If there is no music playing on the output that is currently selected, the Juke box will start to play the moment you “Add” the first Track.
II USER'S GUIDE ELAN HOME SYSTEMS Organizing Your Music Collection This chapter describes the features built into your VIA!dj to help you organize the music in your Library, including information about creating Playlists of your favorite Tracks, deleting Albums or Tracks you no longer want to store, and naming Albums, Tracks, and Artists. Playlists Your VIA!dj allows you to create your own selections of Tracks, called Playlists, and identify them with a name of your choice.
ELAN HOME SYSTEMS II USER'S GUIDE Adding music to a Playlist: You can add music in the Library to a Playlist from any Library screen, by using the Add button on the VIA!dj GUI. For example, to add an Album to a Playlist: • Press the Menu button on the VIA!dj GUI to display the Library. • Press the or buttons to highlight Albums and press the Albums button to display the Albums list. • Use the or buttons to highlight the Album you wish to add to a Playlist. • Press the Add button.
II USER'S GUIDE ELAN HOME SYSTEMS Presets Presets allow Playlists to be used in the same way as a Preset station on a radio tuner. Although you can select a Preset for playback using the VIA! Touch Panel or TV User Interface, the greatest advantage of the Preset feature is that you now have a quick, user-friendly way to access your VIA!dj from standard keypads and remote controls that do not have the visual feedback offered by a VIA! Touch Panel or television. There are thirty available Presets.
ELAN HOME SYSTEMS II USER'S GUIDE The following menu allows you to choose the Playlist to be assigned to the Preset: • Press the Select button to continue. Important Notes: 1. To select VIA!dj Presets from an ELAN keypad, the keypad must be programmed with the proper IR commands. Your authorized ELAN installer may already have programmed your ELAN keypads for these functions. If not, a trip to your home to add the proper commands to your keypads is required.
II USER'S GUIDE ELAN HOME SYSTEMS Editing the Library The VIA!dj labels the Albums, Artists and Tracks in your Library with names which identify the Track you are listening to, and these help you locate items when you are browsing through the Library. If you have an Internet connection, your VIA!dj reads the CD information automatically from the Gracenote Music Recognition Service. You can edit these names at any stage to suit your own preferences.

To add a Track to a Playlist: • From the Now Playing screen, while the Track you wish to add is playing, press Add. • From the Add Current Track to Jukebox or Playlist screen, select the Playlist you which to add the Track to or Jukebox then press Add.

Network Settings This section allows you to specify how your VIA!dj connects to the Internet. Choose between Ethernet, Modem or None as the connection type and press the Save key to commit any changes you make. Specify DHCP as the Ethernet Mode if your VIA!dj is connected to a network with a DHCP server present, and the Ethernet settings should be assigned automatically.
II USER'S GUIDE ELAN HOME SYSTEMS Static Ethernet Settings This section allows you to configure the VIA!dj’s Ethernet settings. Use this section to enter your own Ethernet details in the IP Address, Subnet Mask, Gateway and DNS fields. Be sure to press the Save button to commit any changes you make. Modem Settings If you select Modem as your Internet Connection type you must then input your Internet Service Provider’s details on this screen. Page 56 ©2006 ELAN Home Systems All rights reserved.
ELAN HOME SYSTEMS II USER'S GUIDE TV Settings This section is used to specify if your VIA!dj is configured for PAL or NTSC use. You may need to edit this setting if the VIA!dj GUI is either not displayed on your VIA! Touch Panel or television screen, or if is displayed incorrectly. User Interface Settings The options on this menu allow you to change the Language of the GUI and also to enable or disable On Screen Hints.
II USER'S GUIDE ELAN HOME SYSTEMS By default, your VIA!dj will have On Screen Hints Enabled; changing to Disabled will remove icons depicting the available options on each screen. The on screen hint displayed below is "Back up/restore your music collection to/from a remote computer". System Information The System Information screen displays the Serial Number of your VIA!dj and also the Software Version currently running.
ELAN HOME SYSTEMS II USER'S GUIDE Software Update Settings In the unlikely event that a software update attempt fails, you may need to amend these settings. If this scenario arises, contact your dealer or installer for more information. Remote Back Up Settings This screen allows you to specify Username, Password, Location, and Domain for performing a Back Up operation. For more information about the use of these settings, refer to the section titled Remote Back Up And Restore.
II USER'S GUIDE ELAN HOME SYSTEMS CD Record Settings In this screen you have the option to change the speed at which the CD drive records and also to select the default record quality setting. Selecting Maximum as the Drive Speed will record your CDs at high speed. If you find this setting makes your VIA!dj too noisy, select Standard for quieter but slower operation.
ELAN HOME SYSTEMS II USER'S GUIDE XiVALINK Settings This page allows the Installer to configure XiVALINK options for use when troubleshooting or connecting devices that use XiVALINK protocol. These settings should only be adjusted by your dealer or installer. Output Configuration Output 1 of the VIA!dj can be assigned as Digital (to connect to a Home Theater Processor or A/V Receiver) or Analogue (to connect to a Multi-Room Controller).
II USER'S GUIDE ELAN HOME SYSTEMS Dedicated Remote Control Use In a Multi-Room System In rooms that have TVs with VIA!dj graphics available, but do not have VIA! Touch Panels, you may wish to have a dedicated VIA!dj remote control for that specific room. Your VIA!dj remote control can be configured so that every button press indicates to the VIA!dj which output is to be controlled.
ELAN HOME SYSTEMS II USER'S GUIDE Other Multiroom Control Systems Your VIA!dj is also compatible with a number of leading multi-room control systems. The Controller port on the rear of the system uses a versatile protocol called XiVA-Link which allows access to most of the VIA!dj functions remotely. For information on the XiVA-Link protocol as well as the latest information on supported systems please contact your local dealer or refer to the website listed in the following Getting Help section.
II USER'S GUIDE ELAN HOME SYSTEMS Remote User Interface Your VIA!dj’s User Interface (UI) is accessible via a PC running on your home network. This gives you complete control of your VIA!dj using a keyboard and mouse as opposed to using the remote control. This can help make editing the Library easier and quicker and also allows you to control the VIA!dj from any computer running on your home network. ELAN HOME SYSTEMS II USER'S GUIDE Navigating the Remote User Interface When you first connect to the Remote User Interface, you will recognize the Main Menu screen: The screens of the Remote User Interface are identical to those of the VIA! UI except that when required to edit or enter text, the Remote UI will display the text entry screen just as the VIA! UI does. However, instead of using the alphanumeric keypad on the remote control, you can use your computer keyboard to enter text.
II USER'S GUIDE ELAN HOME SYSTEMS Media Transfer In addition to recording directly from the CD tray, it is also possible to transfer music and cover art images to and from your VIA!dj, using a computer on your home network. This feature allows you to transfer music files from your VIA!dj to a portable device (for example, an Apple® iPod®) to allow you to listen to your music collection while you are away from home.
ELAN HOME SYSTEMS II USER'S GUIDE Enabling Media Transfer • Press the Menu button on the VIA!dj GUI to display the Main Menu. • Use the or buttons to highlight Set Up and press the Select button. • Use the or buttons again to highlight Settings and press the Select button. • Use the or buttons again to highlight Media Transfer Settings and press the Select button. The following screen is displayed: This setting should be set to Enabled by default.
II USER'S GUIDE ELAN HOME SYSTEMS Note: Both the Workgroup and VIA!dj Name should be in uppercase. • In the SMB Mount window click the OK button. • In the SMB/CIFS Filesystem Authentication window enter the username and the password and then click the OK button. A window showing the contents of the VIA!dj Hard Disk will be displayed. At the top level of the Media Transfer directory structure are two folders entitled MusicShare and Import.
ELAN HOME SYSTEMS II USER'S GUIDE Transferring Music to your Portable Player using iTunes® : The iTunes® Media Player application is specifically designed to simplify the process of synchronizing your music collection with an iPod® portable player. Support for other devices is limited; you should check that your portable player is compatible before using this application. iTunes version 4.6 or later is required.
II USER'S GUIDE ELAN HOME SYSTEMS Transferring Music to Your Portable Player Using Windows Media Player: It is also possible to use Windows Media Player to transfer music from your VIA!dj to your portable device. • First, make sure you can navigate to your VIA!dj and view the music in your MusicShare folder. • Display the File drop down menu and select Add to Library, followed by Add Folder.

ELAN HOME II SYSTEMS USER'S GUIDE Telephone & Ethernet Connections The VIA!dj downloads CD information and cover art from the Internet. In order for it to do this, the unit must be connected to either a telephone line or a home network. Ethernet Connections Use a standard Ethernet cable to connect the VIA!dj to a router. Follow the steps listed under System Setup to allow DHCP to configure the settings automatically.
II USER'S GUIDE ELAN HOME SYSTEMS Dial-Up Modem Connections (RJ11 Telephone Line Jack) The VIA!dj is equipped with a built-in dial modem which can be connected directly to a standard telephone line using the RJ11 Telephone Line Jack. Follow the steps listed under System Setup to configure the Modem settings.
