efore the Digitakt came

along all the way back in

2017, if you wanted to

enter the Elektron world you

had to be willing to play with the big

boys. At that point the brand was

focused on bigger, more expensive

boxes like the Octatrack, Analog

Rytm, and Analog Four, each of which

boasted a plethora of features to go

along with their premium price tags.

But the arrival of the Digitakt, ﬁrst

released at just $659, allowed the

Elektron brand to be opened up to a

whole new stratosphere of producers

and gear consumers. The eight-track

‘drum computer’ and sampler also

featured a more stream-lined

workﬂow, combining elements of both

the Octatrack and Analog Rytm into a

tighter, smaller box with a bright new

OLED screen.

The Digitakt features patterns that

can be up to 64 steps long and each

project holds 128 patterns.

Conveniently, there’s a quick reload

shortcut to quickly get back to a

saved pattern state. A master

compressor was added in OS 1.08 to

tame those peaks. There are an

additional eight MIDI tracks to

sequence your external gear;

furthermore the Digitakt can process

external audio through its inputs,

making it a convenient all-in-one

centrepiece for your studio.

Sampling & sequencing

Each of the Digitakt’s eight tracks

feature all you’d need from a sampler

– an ADSR envelope for both the ﬁlter

and amplitude, a ﬁlter with a

multitude of shapes, an overdrive and

bit-reduction effect, an LFO with a

multitude of shapes and destinations

and a send to a global delay and

reverb. Furthermore, the Digitakt

features Elektron’s renowned

sequencing workﬂow, where each step

Elektron Digitakt | Long term test THE PROS & CONS RESAMPLING INDIVIDUAL TRACKS ON THE DIGITAKT A big change in the recent 1.30 OS update gives Digitakt users the ability to choose individual tracks when resampling, as opposed to just the master output or external audio inputs. Simply select what track you’d like to record in the Recording Screen with the main Data encoder. This opens up the Digitakt a good deal, as you can now, say, apply effects to a sample many times over.
