PREPARATION FOR USE Unpacking and Set Up • This carton contains the main unit, two speakers, the pedestal stand, and the remote control handset. Carefully remove all the components from the carton and remove all packing materials form the components. Make sure nothing is accidentally discarded with the packing materials. • Save the carton and packing materials, if possible, in the unlikely event that this unit ever needs to be returned for service.
Attaching The Pedestal Stand NOTE: This system can be used and operated with or without the pedestal stand. If you plan to use this system on a bookshelf, for example, you may find that it is more convenient to use without the pedestal attached. However the pedestal does provide extra stability so we do recommend attaching the pedestal if space is not a problem. 1.) Place the main unit face down on a flat surface as shown. 2.

Return the main unit and the pedestal base to the upright position and slide the main unit all the way backward in the direction of the ‘arrow’onto the pedestal until the locking tabs ‘click’and the main unit is locked in place. If you ever need to remove the main unit from the pedestal: 1.) Place the entire unit face down on a flat surface. B 2.) (A) Depress the two pedestal locking tabs to release the A pedestal. (B) Slide the pedestal upward to completely remove it from the main unit.
Installing The Back Up Batteries This system includes a battery back up circuit that will maintain the tuner preset station memories, the clock time, and the timer settings in the event of a temporary power interruption. The battery back up system requires three “AA” batteries, not included. Please use a well-known brand of alkaline batteries for longest life and most reliable performance. The back-up battery compartment is located on the backside of the main unit. 1.
Remote Control Storage For your convenience we have included a remote control handset holder on the back cabinet of the main unit. To avoid misplacing the handset we suggest that you store it in this holder when not in use. RC-3111 Battery Precautions • Replacement of batteries must be done by an adult. • Do not mix old and new batteries. • Do not mix alkaline, standard (carbon-zinc) or rechargeable (nickel-cadmium) batteries. • The supply terminals are not to be short-circuited.
Connecting The Speakers NOTE: Always connect the speakers before switching the power ‘On’, and never operate the system without the speakers properly connected. The speaker cables and the speaker terminals are color-coded. Connect the Red wires to the Red terminals. Connect the Black wires to the Black terminals. If the wires are connected incorrectly the sound will be “muddy” or distorted.
Auxiliary Input Jacks This system includes a convenience Auxiliary Input (AUX-IN) Jack on the front panel. This jack allows you to connect external audio equipment to this system and listen to the sound from the external equipment through the speakers of this system.
Stereo Headphone Jack This system includes a stereo PHONES jack on the back panel of the main unit. You may connect a set of stereo headphones, not included, to this jack for private listening without disturbing others. The main speakers are automatically shut off when headphones are connected to the PHONES jack. Make sure that the plug from your headphones is fully inserted into the headphone jack.
Power Source This system is designed to operate on 120V AC 60Hz house current only. Connecting this system to any other power source may cause damage to the system and such damage is not covered by your warranty. NOTE: The system has polarized AC plug with one wide blade and one narrow blade. The plug will only fit into matching polarized AC outlets. This is a safety feature to reduce the possibility of electric shock.

Remote Control Battery The remote control requires one “button-type” 3-volt lithium battery, included. To extend the life of the original battery we have inserted a small clear plastic spacer tab between the lithium battery and the battery terminal. You must remove this battery spacer tab before you can use the remote control. RC-3111 To remove the tab, pull it in the direction of the arrow in the illustration as shown.
OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS • Make sure that you have fully extended the FM antenna wire. • Make sure that you have removed the battery spacer from the remote control handset. • Make sure that you have installed 3 “AA” batteries in the main unit battery back up compartment. • Make sure that the system is connected to an AC outlet that is always “live”. Do not connect the system to an AC outlet controlled by a wall switch.
Volume Controls To increase or decrease the system volume press the VOLUME buttons on the front panel or the remote control. or VOL + The Volume Level Indicator will appear on the display when you change the volume level. The level indicator ranges from “00”(Minimum) to “30” (Maximum). The system remembers the volume level when the power is switched ‘Off’and automatically returns to the same level when the power is switched ‘On’again.
MUTE Button (On Remote Control Only) Press the MUTE button on the remote control to shut off the speakers temporarily, for example, to answer the telephone. The sound stops and the MUTE indicator appears in the display. Press the MUTE button again to cancel the mute function and restore the sound. The MUTE indicator disappears. The Mute function will also be canceled automatically by pressing the VOLUME / or VOL +/– buttons 20 MS3111M_112306.
Setting The Clock When the system is connected to an AC outlet the time display will show “AM 12:00”. NOTE: Although it is not necessary to set the clock in order to listen to the Radio or CD player, the clock must be set correctly if you intend to use the timer to turn the system ‘On’and ‘Off’automatically. Set the clock as follows: 1.) Press the MEMORY(CLK. ADJ.) button on front panel or MEMO(PROG) button on remote control once. The ‘Hour’digits begin flashing. 2.
Listening To The Radio 1.) Press the STANDBY button to turn the system ‘On’. 2.) Press the FUNCTION or FUNC. button to select the Tuner mode. An AM or FM frequency will appear on the display. Press the BAND button on front panel or (Stop)/BAND button on remote control to switch between the AM and FM bands if necessary. 3.) Tune to the desired station as follows: • Manual Tuning Repeatedly press the or until the display shows the exact frequency of the desired station.
Hints For Better Reception FM: The FM lead wire antenna on the back panel should be extended to its full length. You may also have to vary the direction of this antenna until you find the position that provides the best reception. AM: The AM bar antenna is inside the cabinet of the main unit. You may need to change the position of the main unit until you find the position that provides the best reception for your favorite AM stations. 23 MS3111M_112306.
Presetting Stations In The Tuner Memory You can store up to 20 of your favorite stations, 10 FM and 10 AM in the tuner memory for easy recall at any time. Using either the manual or automatic tuning method described on previous page, tune to the first station you wish to memorize (Example: FM 103.5 MHz) and then: 1.) Press the MEMORY(CLK. ADJ.) button on front panel or MEMO(PROG) button on remote control once. The display shows preset memory “1” and the MEMORY indicator appear. 2.) Press the MEMORY(CLK.
Recalling Preset Stations 1.) Turn the system ‘On’, press the FUNCTION or FUNC. button to select the Tuner mode, and press the BAND button on front panel or (Stop)/BAND button on remote control to select the desired band if necessary. 2.) Press the MEMORY UP Button on front panel or M-UP(FOLDER+) button on remote control repeatedly until the desired Preset Number and Frequency appear on the display. Changing Preset Stations 1.) Tune to the new station you want to memorize. 2.) Press the MEMORY(CLK. ADJ.
Playing Compact Discs IMPORTANT: This CD player can play normal CDs, Recordable CDs (CD-R), ReWritable CDs (CD-RW), as well as CDs containing compressed MP3 or WMA audio files. However the playability of CD-R/RW, MP3 CDs, and WMA CDs may be affected by the type of software that was used in ‘ripping’the tracks from the original discs and ‘burning’ the tracks onto the blank media. Playability may also be affected by the quality and condition of the blank media you use for recording.
4.) Press the OP/CL or OPEN/CLOSE button again to close the CD door. The display will show “TOC READ” as the player reads the Table Of Contents on the disc. NOTES: • The reading time may be even longer if you are using CD-RW (ReWritable) discs. This is normal and not an indication of any problem with your unit. • The player ‘stops’after reading the the DISC 1 , and will not proceed to the DISC 2 or DISC 3. • If there’s no disc in DISC 1, it will briefly show “NO DISC”, then proceed to the next DISC.
Pause Control To pause temporarily during CD playback press the The sound stops and the PLAY/PAUSE button again. indicator flashes in the display, but the disc continues spinning. Press the PLAY/PAUSE button once more to cancel Pause mode and resume playback at the same point. Skip Track and High Speed Music Search • During playback, repeatedly press the or buttons to skip to higher or lower numbered tracks. Playback will begin on the selected track.
Repeat Playback The Repeat function in this system allows you to continuously repeat a single track, a single disc, or all discs in the player. The Repeat function can be activated during playback or while the player is stopped. One Track Repeat Select the track to be repeated and begin playback. Press the PLAY MODE button once. The REPEAT indicator flashes in the display and the selected track will be repeated continuously. One Disc Repeat Select the disc to be repeated and begin playback.
Random Playback The Random playback feature allows you to play all the tracks of the selected disc in random order. You can select random playback while the discs are playing or when the player is stopped. Press the PLAY MODE button four times. The RANDOM indicator appears in the display. If necessary, press the PLAY/PAUSE button to begin playback. The player will randomly select a track from the disc and begin playback. To cancel random playback, press the STOP or /BAND button.
Programmed Playback The Programmed Playback feature allows you to program a total of up to 20 tracks from a selected disc for playback in any desired order. You may program the same track to play several times within a program sequence if desired. NOTE: You cannot program tracks during playback. If a disc is playing press the STOP or /BAND button first to stop playback before beginning the programming steps below. 1.
NOTES: • After the last programmed track has played the player stops, but the MEMORY indicator remains on and the programmed sequence remains in the memory. To play the programmed sequence again, press the button. PLAY/PAUSE • To cancel the programmed sequence from the memory press the or STOP /BAND button while the player is stopped. The MEMORY Y indicator disappears.
MP3 / WMA CD Playback The PLAY/PAUSE, / , STOP, CD1, CD2, CD3, PLAY MODE, PROGRAM controls have the same functions for MP3/WMA CDs as they do for normal CDs. NOTE: Because MP3/WMA CDs contain so much more information than normal CDs this CD player will take longer to ‘Read’all of the information on an MP3/ WMA disc.
5.) Press the ID3 button. The “TITLE”, “ARTIST ”, “ALBUM ” information will scroll continuously on the display. If there’s no information in the ‘ID3’, the display will show “NO TAG”. NOTE: WMA does not support ID3. Press ID3 button again to return to normal display. 6.) Playback will continue until all tracks on all folders have been played, then the player stops and the display shows the total folders number and tracks number on last disc played.
MP3 / WMA CD Repeat Playback There are 4 Repeat Playback options with MP3/WMA CDs. In addition to “One Track Repeat”, “One Disc Repeat”, “All Discs Repeat” options which are same for CDs, you may also select “Folder Repeat” mode to repeat all the tracks contained in a single Folder. One Track Repeat Select the track to be repeated and begin playback. Press the PLAY MODE button once. The REPEAT indicator flashes in the display and the selected track will be repeated continuously.
MP3 / WMA CD Random Playback Load your MP3/WMA CD in the player, wait until the reading process is completed. Press the PLAY MODE button five times. The RANDOM indicator appears in the display. If necessary, press the PLAY/PAUSE button to begin playback. The player will randomly select a folder and a track from the disc and begin playback. To cancel random playback, press the STOP button on front panel or /BAND button on remote control.
MP3 / WMA CD Programmed Playback NOTES: • When programming the tracks on an MP3/WMA CD you must also select the Folder Number of the tracks being programmed. • You can program up to 10 tracks on an MP3/WMA CD. • Programming can only be done while the player is in the Stop mode. If the MP3/WMA disc is playing, first press the STOP button on front panel or /BAND button on remote control to stop playback, then follow the programming steps below.
5.) Press the PROGRAM button on front panel or MEMO(PROG) button on remote control to enter Track “003” in Program Memory “P01”. The Program Number advances to “P02”, the Folder Number returns to “000”. 6.) Repeat Steps 2 through 5 to enter up to 10 tracks in the program memory. 7.) After you have entered up to 10 tracks in the Program Memory, press the PLAY/ PAUSE button to begin programmed playback.
Special Functions Timer Operation This system includes a programmable TIMER function. You can use the timer to wake you up to the Radio or to your favorite CD. The timer can only be programmed while the system is in the Standby (Power Off) mode. 1.) Press the TIMER/SLEEP button once, The TIMER indicator appears and the Hour digits will begin flashing in the display. 2.) Press the or button to set the display to the desired turn on hour, AM or PM. 3.) Press the TIMER/SLEEP button.
7.) Press the TIMER/SLEEP button again to return to correct time. The TIMER indicator remains ‘On’. At the selected time the system will turn on automatically. It will continue to operate until you press the STANDBY button to shut the power off. The system will shut off but the Timer remains set for the following day. To deactivate the Timer, press the TIMER/SLEEP button until the TIMER indicator disappears.
NOTES: • You can shut the unit off manually before the Sleep Timer counts down to “00” by pressing the STANDBY button at any time. Or just press TIMER/ SLEEP button to cancel the Sleep Timer. • If you are falling asleep to CD the system will only operate until the CD ends. If you set the Sleep Timer for 90 minutes but your CD is only 45 minutes long, the music will stop after 45 minutes.
Resetting The System Computer This system is equipped with a special circuit designed to protect the internal computer from permanent damage due to unexpected power surges. If you find that the system does not respond to any commands from the front panel controls or the remote handset, the system probably experienced a sudden power surge that activated the protection circuit.
CARE AND MAINTENANCE Compact Disc Care • To remove a disc from its storage case, press down on the center of the case and lift the disc out, holding it carefully by the edges. • Fingerprints and dust should be carefully wiped off the disc’s recorded surface with a soft cloth.Unlike conventional records, compact discs have no grooves to collect dust and microscopic debris, so gently wiping with a soft cloth should remove most particles. Wipe in a straight line from the inside to the outside of the disc.
Care Of The Cabinet If the cabinet becomes dusty wipe it with a soft dry dust cloth. Do not use any wax, polish sprays, or abrasive cleaners on the cabinet.
