Indoor Air Quality
New carpet can and often does have an odor. This odor should diminish significantly within several days
and should be unnoticeable within several weeks. The rate of reduction of the odor will be accelerated
where ample fresh air and circulation are provided. Though the odor may cause displeasure or
annoyance, it is rare when an actual health issue is experienced.
The sources of the odors are the synthetic components of the carpet itself. None of these components
will cause an actual allergic reaction, as allergies are the body’s reaction to a specific protein or proteins.
Latex allergies are reactions to natural latex. Our carpet is made with synthetic latex and as such, does
not contain a protein. The carpet fiber and backing components are synthetic. Though not an allergen,
there is an ingredient carpet latex that in isolated occasions can be an irritant that may display similar to
an allergy. Response to this ingredient is rare and should subside along with the new carpet smell.
Synthetic latex is common throughout the carpet industry.
If new carpet smell is a concern, Engineered Floors PureBac carpet backing does not contain latex and as
such, has a greatly reduced smell compared to carpet using latex.
The indoor air quality protocol in the carpet industry is the Green Label Plus (GLP) program which is
administered by the Carpet & Rug Institute. All Engineered Floors carpet products, including those using
latex, are compliant with the Green Label Plus program. Attached is a Green Label Plus program
overview. GLP test criteria and additional information about the GLP program can be found on the CRI
web site www.carpet-rug.org
