1. EnsureallSSKdevicebatteriesintheSSKkitarefullycharged.
2. Place the SSK receiver where the system receiver will finally be installed. NB‐it is extremely
importantthatifthesystemreceiveris
tobemountedinan enclosedpanel(metalorplastic)sothat
anexternalaerialextensionisused,anSSKreceiverextensionaerialmustbeusedandplacedwhere
thesystemreceiveraerialwillbefinallybeinstalled.TwoextensionaerialsareavailablefromSontay,
a2metreversionRF‐
AERIAL‐PM2anda5metreversionRF‐AERIAL‐PM5.
3. FittheaerialtotheSSKreceiver,orifusinganaerialextension,tothebulkheadjackconnector.
4. Ensure,wherepossible,thatthereceiveraerialisalignedvertically,andasfarawayfromobstructions
aspossible.

Referencing site floor plans where possible, place SSK end devices (SSK EDs) in their appropriate
positions,takingcaretoensurethatthesensorsarenotplaced;

b. Onacoldorhotoutsidewall,whereconductedorradiantheatmayaffect
thereading
c. Behindanyobstructionlikelytoimpedetheradiosignal(forexample,afilingcabinet)
d. Ensure that each space housing SSK ED is mounted with the tamperproof screw at the
bottom.ThisensurestheintegralPCBaerialisinthecorrectalignment.
6. DoNOTswitchon
SSKEDsuntilthereceiverisinstalled.
7. SwitchontheSSKreceiver.Ifthisisthefirsttimethereceiverhasbeencommissioned,notethatthe
redLEDneartheresetbuttonisflashing.ThisindicatesthattheSSKreceiverhasnochilddeviceson
thenetwork.
a. Ifusing
CMS,connecttheSSKreceiver’sUSBconnectortoalaptoporPCwithCMSinstalled.
b. Ifrequired,installthe2driversrequiredforCMS(seepage26).Windows7users,pleasesee

c. Start CMS by double‐clicking the desktop icon. Select the required comport (see
page 27).
Logonatadminlevel(seepage29and30).
d. Ifrequired,addabackgroundimagetoCMSmapdisplay(seepage35).
e. Using CMS, ensure that the receiver appears in the hierarchical display. Add to the map
displaybydrag‐and‐drop.
8. Switchonthe
HHM.
9. Afterinitialisation,theLCDwilldisplaytheSSKreceiver.
10. SwitchontheSSKEDsusingtheswitchonthebackcover,startingwiththoseclosesttothereceiver.
TheLCDwilldi splayalistofSSKEDswhichareconnecteddirectlytothereceiver,togetherwiththeir
linkqualityindex(LQI).
a. Togetfurtherinformationaboutadevice,usetheUp/Downarrowkeystoselectthatdevice,
thenpresstherightarrowkeytoviewmoredetailedinformation.
b. TodisplaytheMACaddressandfirmwarerevisionnumber,usetherightarrowkeytoselect
“more”then
presstheOKkey.
c. Togobacktothemaindevicelist,usetheUp/Downarrowkeystoselect“back”,thenpress
theOKkey.
d. IfusingCMS,ensurethatalltheSSKEDsappearinthehierarchicaldisplay.
11. Using the HHM (or CMS), observe whether each
battery powered sensor node has communication
backtotheSSKreceiver.Ifitdoes,observethelinkquality,shownontheLCDdisplay.
a. Ifthelinkqualityisshownasgoodorv.good,norouterisrequired forthisnode.Gotostep

b. Ifthereisno
communication,orlinkqualityisshownasmarginaltotheSSKreceiver,youwill
needtopositionarouterbetweenthenodeandreceiver.
c. In this case, position a router between the node and receiver in a convenient location,
rememberingthatasystemrouterinthefinalinstallationwill
requireapermanent24Vac/dc
supply.
d. Ensure,wherepossible,thattherouteraerialsarealignedvertically,andasfarawayfrom
obstructionsaspossible.
e. ObservetheHHMagain.ThenewroutershouldberegisteredontheHHM.
