Telephone/fax/modem protection
Telephones , faxes and modems are equi pped w i th s o-
phist i cated but s ensit i ve electroni c s. Typ i cal c i rcu i t s u s ed
to protect them w i th s urge arre s ters are s hown i n Fig. 1 .
Thes e arre s ters protect agai n s t common-mode i nter-
ference voltages , i.e .surge voltages that appear i n both
l i nes to ground. In the event of an overvoltage, the arre s ter
protects both exchange l i nes by conducti ng the s urge
current away to ground
.
Signal line protection
Signal c i rcu i t s are often run w i th no ground conductor.
A 2-electrode arre s ter c i rcu i t located between the two
signal l i nes prevents the formati on of large potenti al
d i fferences at the i nput of the equi pment to be protected
before they can caus e any damage ( Fig. 2 ) . This c i rcu i t
offers d i fferenti al-mode protecti on.
