Introduction
Excessive voltages and the res ulti ng s urge currents can
damage or even des troy communi cati ons equi pment,
data trans m ission and energy s upply s y s tems. Inj ury to
human bei ngs cannot always be excluded e i ther.Such
excessive voltages may be due to a number of factors.
They i nclude:
– Atmos pheri c f i elds and d ischarges (thunders torms )
– Inducti ve coupli ng from power s upply l i nes ,
e . g . tri ggered by s w i tchi
ng processe s
– D i rect contact between communi cati ons and power
s upply l i nes

uncri t i cal values and rel i ably d ischarge any dangerous
currents that may occur.
