BEFORE YOU BEGIN tacting us. The model number and the location of the serial number decal are shown on the front cover of this manual. Congratulations for selecting the new EPICTM EL 2980 elliptical exerciser. The EL 2980 provides a wide array of features designed to make your workouts at home more effective and enjoyable. To avoid a registration fee for any service needed under warranty, you must register the elliptical exerciser at www.iconservice.com/registration.
ASSEMBLY To hire an authorized service technician to assemble the elliptical exerciser, call 1-800-445-2480. Assembly requires two persons. Place all parts of the elliptical exerciser in a cleared area and remove the packing materials. Do not dispose of the packing materials until assembly is completed. In addition to the included tool(s), assembly requires a Phillips screwdriver adjustable wrench , and a rubber mallet .
1. 1 To make assembly easier, read the information on page 5 before you begin assembling the elliptical exerciser. Attach the Stabilizer (8) to the Frame (1) with two M10 x 123mm Button Bolts (38) and two M10 Locknuts (70) (only one is shown). 38 Tighten two Leveling Feet (36) into the underside of the Stabilizer (8). 8 36 2. Have another person hold the Upright (2) near the Frame (1) as shown. 1 70 2 See the inset drawing. Locate the wire tie in the Upright (2).
3. Attach the Track Frame (4) to the Frame (1) with two M10 x 25mm Patch Screws (48) and two M10 Split Washers (85). Tip: Finger tighten a Patch Screw into the lower hole first, and then finger tighten a Patch Screw into the upper hole. Then, tighten both Patch Screws. 3 85 1 Tip: This step may be easier if you raise the Frame (1) a few inches in the location shown by the arrow at the right while you attach the Track Frame (4). 4 48 85 48 See the inset drawing.
5. Identify the Left Pedal Leg (14), which is marked with a “Left” sticker. 5 Attach a Pedal (21) to the Left Pedal Leg (14) with three M10 x 13mm Button Screws (54) and three M10 Washers (67). Make sure that the Button Screws are in the indicated holes. The other holes in the Left Pedal Leg are not used. 21 14 Attach the other Pedal (not shown) to the Right Pedal Leg (not shown) in the same way. 67 67 54 6. Apply a thin film of grease to the barrel of an M10 x 65mm Bolt Set (80).
7. Identify the Left Handlebar (19), which is marked with a “Left” sticker. 7 Insert the Left Handlebar (19) into one of the Handlebar Legs (17). Next, turn the Left Handlebar and the Handlebar Leg so that the wide side of the pivot tube on the Left Handlebar is above the hexagonal holes in the Handlebar Leg. 19 Wide side of pivot tube Attach the Left Handlebar (19) with two M8 x 38mm Button Bolts (58) and two M8 Locknuts (72). Make sure that the Locknuts are inside the hexagonal holes.
9. Apply a film of grease to the barrel of an M8 x 55mm Bolt Set (82) and to a 7mm Spacer (55). Slide an M8 Washer (69) and the Spacer onto the barrel of the Bolt Set. 9 While another person holds the front end of the Left Pedal Leg (14) inside the bracket on the left Handlebar Leg (17), insert the barrel of the M8 x 55mm Bolt Set (82) through both parts. Next, slide a 7mm Spacer (55) and an M8 Washer (69) onto the end of the barrel of the M8 x 55mm Bolt Set (82).
. Attach the Water Bottle Holder (26) to the Upright (2) with two M4 x 19mm Screws (57). 11 2 26 57 12. Plug the power adapter into the jack on the frame of the elliptical exerciser (see HOW TO PLUG IN THE POWER ADAPTER on page 12). IMPORTANT: If the elliptical exerciser has been exposed to cold temperatures, allow it to warm to room temperature before plugging in the power adapter. If you do not do this, the console displays or other electronic components may become damaged.
HOW TO USE THE ELLIPTICAL EXERCISER HOW TO PLUG IN THE POWER ADAPTER HOW TO EXERCISE ON THE ELLIPTICAL EXERCISER Plug one end of the included power adapter into the jack on the front of the elliptical exerciser. Plug the power cord on the other end of the power adapter into an appropriate outlet that is properly installed in accordance with all local codes and ordinances. To mount the elliptical exerciser, hold the handlebars and step onto the pedal that is in the lowest position.
CONSOLE DIAGRAM Navigation Buttons FEATURES OF THE CONSOLE The console features a fitness journal, which automatically records and stores your exercise information so that you can view your workout history and track your progress. This console offers an array of features designed to make your workouts more effective and enjoyable. When you use the manual mode of the console, you can change the resistance of the pedals with the touch of a button.
2. Enter user information. HOW TO PERSONALIZE CONSOLE SETTINGS To enter your user information, first highlight the SETUP option and press the Enter button. The setup menu will then appear in the display. The console has a user mode that allows you to designate yourself as User 1 or User 2, enter user information before you begin exercising, and select console settings.
3. Select a default user setting. year field. Then, press the up and down Navigation buttons to select the desired month, day, or year. The console can record, store, and load information for two different users. The default user setting allows you to choose the user information that will be loaded and recorded when you turn on the console at the beginning of a workout session. When you have finished setting the date, press the Enter button. The time setting will then appear in the display.
5. Follow your progress with the display. HOW TO USE THE MANUAL MODE 1. Begin pedaling to turn on the console. As you exercise, the display can show the following workout information: A moment after you begin pedaling, the display will light. • The elapsed time. Note: When you select a workout, the display will show the time remaining in the workout instead of the elapsed time. 2. Personalize console settings if desired. • The distance, in total revolutions, that you have pedaled.
6. Measure your heart rate if desired. HOW TO USE A PRESET WORKOUT If there are sheets of clear plastic on the metal contacts on the handgrip pulse sensor, remove the plastic. To measure your heart rate, hold the handgrip pulse sensor with Contacts your palms resting against the metal contacts. Avoid moving your hands or gripping the contacts too tightly. 1. Begin pedaling to turn on the console. A moment after you begin pedaling, the display will light. 2. Select the workout menu.
HOW TO USE A HEART RATE WORKOUT At the end of each segment of the workout, a series of tones will sound and the small arrow will move to the next segment of the profile. If a different resistance level and/or target rpm is programmed for the next segment, the resistance level and/or target rpm will flash in the display for a few seconds to alert you. The resistance of the pedals will then change. 1. Begin pedaling to turn on the console. A moment after you begin pedaling, the display will light. 2.
IMPORTANT: When the current segment of the workout ends, the pedals will automatically adjust to the resistance level for the next segment. 5. Begin pedaling to start the workout. Each heart rate workout is divided into 20 or 30 one-minute segments. One target heart rate is programmed for each segment. Note: The same target heart rate may be programmed for consecutive segments. The workout will continue in this way until the small arrow reaches the right end of the profile.
HOW TO VIEW THE FITNESS JOURNAL 5. View exercise information by month. 1. Begin pedaling to turn on the console. After a few seconds, the view month menu will appear in the display. A moment after you begin pedaling, the display will light. To view exercise information by month, press the up and down Navigation buttons to highlight the desired month in the right side of the display. Then, press the Enter button. The exercise information for the selected month will appear in the display. 2.
HOW TO RESET THE FITNESS JOURNAL HOW TO USE THE SOUND SYSTEM 1. Select the user mode. To play music or audio books through the consoleʼs sound system while you exercise, you must connect your iPod®, MP3 player, CD player, or personal audio player through the audio jack or through the Integrated Universal Dock for iPod®. See step 1 on page 14. 2. Reset the fitness journal.
MAINTENANCE AND TROUBLESHOOTING HOW TO ADJUST THE REED SWITCH Inspect and tighten all parts of the elliptical exerciser regularly. Replace any worn parts immediately. If the console does not display correct feedback, the reed switch should be adjusted. First, see HOW TO AJUST THE BELT at the left and remove the M6 x 16mm Button Screws (49) from the right Pedal Disc (5). Without removing the Pedal Disc, pivot it out of the way.
EXERCISE GUIDELINES WARNING: Burning Fat—To burn fat effectively, you must exercise at a low intensity level for a sustained period of time. During the first few minutes of exercise, your body uses carbohydrate calories for energy. Only after the first few minutes of exercise does your body begin to use stored fat calories for energy. If your goal is to burn fat, adjust the intensity of your exercise until your heart rate is near the lowest number in your training zone.
