Welcome! PictureMate CharmTM is your easy-to-use, personal photo lab. Just insert a digital camera memory card and you’re ready to print brilliant, long-lasting photos. Because PictureMate® is light and portable, you can print whenever and wherever you take pictures. Plus, your PictureMate prints will be as brilliant and vibrant generations from now as they are today. A Quick Introduction to Digital Photography 1.
Special Features Printing with your PictureMate becomes even easier with these special features: From PictureMate’s photo viewer screen, you can view your photos and press Print to print the ones you want. Or you can select to print all photos. (See page 11.) If your camera supports DPOF (Digital Print Order Format), you can select which photos to print while the memory card is still in your camera. When you insert the card into PictureMate, you just have to press OK and Print. (See page 15.
Supported Photo Formats Make sure your photos meet these requirements for printing with your PictureMate (without a computer): ● JPEG files only ● Resolutions ranging from 80 × 80 to 9200 × 9200 pixels PictureMate recognizes and prints the first 9,990 photos on your memory card. Where to Get a Print Pack and Accessories The PictureMate Print Pack has everything you need to print in one box: photo paper and a photo cartridge.

Prepare to Print Before you print with PictureMate, you need to: ● Insert your memory card (below) ● Load paper (see page 7) 2 Raise and adjust the photo viewer screen. 3 Press the corner of the output tray to open it. When you finish printing, you can remove your memory card (see page 9). Inserting Your Memory Card 1 Move the handle to the back. Then open the top cover.
4 Press the P On button to turn on PictureMate. 5 Insert the memory card into the correct slot, as shown on the right. Insert just one card at a time. Removing Your Memory Card Loading Paper When you are ready to remove a memory card, first make sure the memory card light is not flashing. Caution: Don’t load plain paper; this may damage PictureMate. 1 Move the handle to the back. Then open the top cover and raise the photo viewer screen. 2 Press the corner of the output tray to open it. Caution: Do not remove a card while the memory card light is flashing; you may lose photos on your card.
3 Slide the edge guides outward. Note: Load a maximum of 20 sheets at a time. Load your paper glossy or whiter side up to prevent smearing. 6 Store any unused paper in the original package and keep it flat in a dry area to prevent curling. Note: When you need more paper, order a PictureMate Print Pack. See page 45 for more information. Choosing a Group of Photos 4 Create a stack of up to 20 sheets of paper and separate the sheets slightly by fanning them.
Choose Photos and Print After you insert your camera’s memory card, PictureMate displays your photos on the photo viewer screen (shown at right). Note: You can adjust the angle of the photo viewer screen by raising or lowering the top of the screen. Be sure to lower the screen before closing the printer lid.
You see the number 1 on the photo, indicating that one copy will be printed: Note: If your memory card has more than 1000 photos, PictureMate divides them into groups of 999. You can select the group you want to view and print. See page 10 for more information. Press the Display button to switch between one photo displayed with or without text, one photo with a “filmstrip” of 5 additional photos, or 6 photos.
The preview screen shows the layout, number of sheets, and other settings you have chosen, for example: Automatic fix icon Total number of sheets Printing Groups of Photos 1 Press 2 Press l or r to choose Select Photos, then press OK. 3 Press l or r to choose Select Group, then press OK. 4 Follow the on-screen instructions. Menu. Printing All Photos Note: For more information about print settings, see page 17. 6 Press l or r to review your selected photos.
2 Press l or r to choose Select Photos, then press OK. 3 Press l or r to highlight Select All Photos, then press OK. 4 If you want more than one copy of each picture, press r to increase the number of copies or l to decrease it. 5 To preview your photos, press 6 Press l or r to review your selected photos. If you change your mind, press the Stop/Clear button. 7 If you want to change the layout or edit your photos, press Menu. See page 17 for instructions.
5 After selecting all the dates you want, press OK. The photos taken on the selected date(s) appear on the screen. 6 Press l or r to view the selected photos. 7 Follow the steps on page 12 to select photos, set the number of copies for each, and print. Printing Camera-Selected DPOF Photos If your camera supports DPOF (Digital Print Order Format), you can use it to pre-select which photos and how many copies you want to print.
Storing and Displaying Your PictureMate Photos Photos printed on PictureMate photo paper are beautiful and long-lasting. Follow these guidelines to make sure they will look great for generations. Displaying Your Photos ● To ensure photos will last as long as possible, display them under glass or in photo albums. ● Keep photos out of the sun to help prevent fading. Storing Unused Paper Caring for Your Photos ● To avoid scratches or smudging, do not rub the printed side of the photo.

Choosing a Layout Note: For the fastest printing, select Border. By default, your photos are printed at the full 4 × 6 size, without borders. If you want to print pictures with white borders or place several small photos on one sheet of paper, you can use the Layout menu to change the layout. When you print without borders, your images are automatically expanded and cropped around the edges. This may cause part of your image to be cut off.
Printing a Proof Sheet 2 Press You can print small thumbnail images of all the photos on your memory card, 20 images per page. 3 Press l or r to highlight Setup, then press OK. 4 Press l or r to highlight Advanced Settings, then press OK. If you select Fix Photo, you see a list of 4 enhance modes: Note: These settings affect only your printed pictures. They do not change your original image files. 1 After inserting a card, press 2 Press l or r to highlight Basic Print Settings, then press OK. 3 Press l or r to highlight Enhance, then press OK. 4 Press l or r to select one of the following options: 5 Menu. ● Fix Photo: This setting improves your photos’ colors and increases contrast and sharpness.
Adjusting Borderless Expansion When you print borderless pictures, your images are automatically expanded and cropped. If your pictures are cut off around the edges, you can adjust the amount of expansion and cropping. Printing Photos in Black-and-White or Sepia You can print pictures in black-and-white or in a sepia tone (like an old-fashioned photo) even when the originals are in color. Your original images are not changed. 1 Press 2 Press l or r to highlight Setup, then press OK.
5 Press l or r to select B & W or Sepia, then press OK. You can see the effect on your photo. Adding Camera Text If your camera allows you to add text to your photos, you can print the pictures along with the text. This setting is available for borderless photos only. 1 Select the photos that have text added by your camera. 2 Press 3 Press l or r to highlight Setup, then press OK. 4 Press l or r to highlight Advanced Settings, then press OK.
Print From an External Device PictureMate can print photos stored on a: ● PictBridge-enabled digital camera (this page) ● Bluetooth-enabled device (requires an optional Bluetooth Photo Print adapter; see page 24). 4 Connect your camera’s USB cable to your camera and the EXT. I/F port on the back of PictureMate. 5 Use your camera’s controls to select and print photos on PictureMate. (See your camera manual for instructions.
Printing Wirelessly From a Bluetooth Device 2 Plug the adapter into the back of PictureMate. 3 Make sure you are within about 30 feet of PictureMate. EXT. I/F port on the You can print photos wirelessly from your Bluetooth-enabled PDA, cell phone, or computer when you use the optional Bluetooth Photo Print Adapter. The adapter (part# C12C824383) is available from your local reseller or Epson (see page 69).
4 Select the photo you want to print from your Bluetooth device and send it to PictureMate: ● Windows®: Send photos directly to PictureMate with your Bluetooth file sharing program. See the documentation included with your computer’s Bluetooth adapter for details. ● Macintosh®: Double-click Bluetooth File Exchange in your Utilities folder. Follow the on-screen steps to choose a photo file, discover PictureMate, and send photos.
Print From a Computer To use PictureMate with your computer, you must first: ● Install the PictureMate software on your computer from the PictureMate CD as described here. ● Connect PictureMate to your computer with a USB cable. If you don’t have a USB cable, you can buy one from your local computer dealer or from Epson. Once your software is installed and PictureMate is connected to your computer, see page 31 for instructions on printing from your computer.
Note: If you have problems installing the software, see page 64. 3 If you see the AutoPlay window, click the option Run SETUP.exe. When you see the User Account Control screen, click Continue. 4 When you see this screen, click Install. 5 Read the license agreement and click Accept. The software starts installing. Installing Software for Windows Before you start, make sure PictureMate is NOT connected to your computer and does NOT have a memory card inserted in it.
After a moment, you see this screen: Your PictureMate software is installed. Note: If you see a screen like this one, remove your memory card and click the X in the corner to close it. 6 Connect the USB cable to any open USB port on your computer. Then connect the other end to the USB port on the back of PictureMate. Note: PictureMate is automatically set as your default printer. If you have another printer, you can change this setting in the Windows Control Panel.
8 When you see a message that installation is complete, click Exit. 4 When you see this screen, click Install. 9 Follow the on-screen instructions to register PictureMate. Before you start, make sure PictureMate is NOT connected to your Macintosh and does NOT have a memory card inserted in it. 5 Read the license agreement and click Accept. 1 Press the P On button to turn on PictureMate. 6 2 Insert the PictureMate CD. Follow the on-screen instructions to install the software.
After a few minutes, you see this screen: If you’re using Mac OS X 10.5.x or later, skip to step 10. If you’re using Mac OS X 10.3.9 or 10.4.11, continue with the next step. 7 8 When you see this screen, click Add Printer. 9 Follow the steps on the right side of the screen to add PictureMate. Connect the USB cable to any open USB port on your Macintosh. Then connect the other end to the USB port on the back of PictureMate.
Print From a Computer Follow these basic printing instructions for your computer: ● Windows (below) ● Macintosh (see page 37) Printing From a Windows Computer You can print photos from an imaging application, the Windows Photo Gallery or Photo Viewer (page 31), or the Picture and Fax Viewer in Windows XP (page 34). Printing from the Windows Photo Gallery/Photo Viewer Note: Screens may vary depending on your operating system. 1 Locate the photo you want to print on your computer.
3 You see the printer settings window: Click the Print icon at the top of the screen, then select Print from the drop-down menu that appears. Sample photo Options 4 5 32 Make sure your printer is selected, then choose PictureMate Photo Paper as the Paper type setting. (4 × 6 in is automatically selected as the Paper size setting.) Click Options in the lower right corner of the screen and select Printer Properties.
● You can change the Color Option and see the effects on the sample photo (the changes don’t affect your original). Auto Correction improves the quality of photos that are too dark or have a color cast. Scene Correction lets you choose the subject of your photo so that PictureMate can correct it appropriately. You can select People, Landscapes, or Night scene. Tip: For more information about printer settings, click Help. 7 Click OK.
Printing with the Windows XP Picture and Fax Viewer 1 Locate the photo you want to print on your computer. 2 Right-click the photo, highlight Open With, and select Windows Picture and Fax Viewer. Print icon 3 Click the 4 Click Next. 34 Print icon at the bottom of the screen. 5 When you see this screen, select the photo(s) you want to print and click Next.
6 When you see this screen, select your EPSON PictureMate model and click Printing Preferences. You see the printer settings screen: Sample image 7 Printing Preferences Choose from the following settings: ● Select Borderless to print a photo without borders. Select Borders to print with a white border all around. ● Borderless prints are automatically expanded. If too much of your photo edges are cut off, set the Expansion slider to Min. If you see a white edge on your photo, select Mid or Max.
● You can change the Color Option and see the effects on the sample photo (the changes don’t affect your original). During printing, this window appears on your computer screen showing the progress of your print job. You can cancel printing if necessary and see your photo cartridge status. Printing From a Macintosh See the section below for your Mac OS operating system. Mac OS X 10.5 and later Cancel 1 Start your print program and open the photo you want to print. 2 Open the File menu and select Print. 3 Select EPSON PictureMate PM225 as the Printer setting. 4 Click d to expand the Print window, if necessary.
In Preview, you see the settings shown below: 5 38 Open the Paper Size menu and place your cursor on the 4 × 6 in option. You see extended options: ● Select 4 × 6 in (Borderless) to print without any borders. ● Select 4 × 6 in (Borders) to print with white borders all around. 6 Select the direction you want your photo to print ( for portrait, for landscape facing right, or for landscape facing left) as the Orientation. 7 Select Print Settings from the pop-up menu.
● 9 Borderless prints are automatically expanded. If too much of your photo edges are cut off, set the Expansion slider to Min. If you see a white edge on your photo, select Mid or Max. To reduce or remove red-eye effects, select Extension Settings from the pop-up menu and choose Fix Red-Eye. Mac OS X 10.3 and 10.4 1 Start your print program and open the photo you want to print. 2 Open the File menu and select Page Setup. 3 Select your PictureMate model from the Format for menu.
● Select 4 × 6 in (Borderless) to print without any borders. ● Select 4 × 6 in (Borders) to print with white borders all around. 8 Select Print Settings from the pop-up menu. Note: iPhoto® expands two sides of an image to the maximum print area, so you may see small borders in iPhoto prints. 5 Select the direction you want your photo to print ( for portrait, for landscape facing right, or for landscape facing left) as the Orientation. 6 Click OK. 7 Select Print from the File menu.
● ● You can change the Color Option and see the effects on the sample photo (the changes don’t affect your original). 12 From this window, you can do the following: ● To cancel printing, click the print job and click Delete. Sepia changes the colors to brown for an oldfashioned look. ● To pause printing, click the print job and click Hold. Black & White changes a color photo to black-and-white. ● To resume printing, click a print job marked “Hold” and click Resume.
Copy Photos to and From Your Computer You can insert a memory card into PictureMate and copy the photos from the card to your computer. You can also copy photos from your computer to the memory card. Make sure your PictureMate software is installed and PictureMate is connected to your computer as described in “Installing Software and Connecting PictureMate” on page 26.

Follow the on-screen instructions. ● To copy photos from your computer to the card, select Open folder to view files and click OK. Then drag and drop the photos from your computer folder to the correct folder on your card.
Windows 2000 Preparing to Remove a Memory Card Access your card just as you would access a drive on your computer. Once you’re finished copying photos to or from your memory card, follow the steps below to remove it. Be sure to remove any cards before turning off PictureMate or unplugging its USB cable. To copy photos to and from your computer and card, drag and drop the photos to the card or folder.
Replace Print Pack When PictureMate needs a new Print Pack, you will see a message on the photo viewer screen. The Print Pack contains a new photo cartridge and photo paper. When you need a new Print Pack, see these sections: ● Buy a PictureMate Print Pack (to the right) ● Replace the photo cartridge (see page 46) If you want to check the status of your photo cartridge, see page 48.
Replacing the Photo Cartridge 3 Make sure you have a new PictureMate Print Pack before you remove the old photo cartridge. Once you remove the cartridge, you must install the new one right away. Slide the cartridge lever left, to the Release position. Caution: Before you replace the cartridge, read the “Photo Cartridge Safety Instructions” on page 81. 1 Make sure PictureMate is on but not printing. 2 Open the cartridge door on the back of PictureMate.
Warning: Keep photo cartridges out of the reach of children and do not drink the ink. 6 Slide the cartridge straight into the slot, label side up, until it clicks into place. If ink gets on your hands, wash them thoroughly with soap and water. If ink gets in your eyes, flush them thoroughly with water. If discomfort or vision problems continue after flushing, see a doctor immediately. Caution: Do not attempt to refill the photo cartridge.
Caution: If the cartridge is not inserted correctly, PictureMate will not be able to print. 8 Close the cartridge door all the way. Checking Photo Cartridge Status You can check the status of your Print Pack at any time. 1 Press 2 Press l or r to highlight Maintenance, then press OK. 3 Press l or r to highlight Cartridge Status, then press OK. You see the status displayed on the photo viewer screen: Menu. The gray square represents the ink level 4 48 Press OK to exit.
Take PictureMate With You PictureMate’s handle makes it easy to carry short distances. If you have the optional battery, you can use PictureMate just about anywhere, even if an electrical outlet is not available. 4 Lower the screen, then close the paper support and output tray. 5 Unplug the power adapter and any connected USB cable or device. Place the power cable and adapter in the PictureMate accessory box. 6 Pack PictureMate in the box that it came in or the optional carrying case.
Using the Optional Battery To buy the optional battery, check with your PictureMate retailer or go to www.MyPictureMate.com. See page 69 for more information on purchasing PictureMate supplies and accessories. 4 Insert the battery as shown until it clicks into place. With a fully charged battery, you can print about 100 photos. Installing the Battery 1 Make sure PictureMate is turned off. Charging the Battery 2 Unplug the AC adapter from PictureMate.
The power light flashes during charging when PictureMate is off. It takes about 2 hours to fully charge the battery when PictureMate is off. It takes longer when you use PictureMate while it is charging. Removing the Battery The power light turns off when the battery is fully charged (if PictureMate is turned off). 1 Make sure PictureMate is turned off. 2 Release the latch and remove the battery. 3 Replace the battery cover or battery.
Set PictureMate Preferences You can change the way PictureMate works by using the Setup menu.
3 Press l or r to highlight Display Settings, then press OK. 4 Press l or r to highlight Print Preview, then press OK. 5 Press l or r to choose Off or On, then press OK. Changing PictureMate’s Language You can change the language on PictureMate’s screen to French, Portuguese, or Spanish. 1 Press 2 Press l or r to highlight Setup, then press OK. 3 Press l or r to highlight Language, then press OK.
on encryption, depending on the Bluetooth-enabled device from which you print. The Setup menu allows you to make communication and security settings for Bluetooth printing. 1 Connect the Bluetooth adapter to PictureMate (see page 24). 2 Press 3 Press l or r to highlight Setup, then press OK. 4 Press l or r to highlight Bluetooth, then press OK. 5 To display the device address for PictureMate (set at the factory), press l or r to select Device Address, then press OK.
Option Settings Description Encryption On/Off (default = Off) Select On to encrypt communication and require that a four-digit Passkey be entered into a device before it can print from PictureMate. Passkey Any four-digit number (default = 0000) This setting allows you to set a four-digit Passkey that must be entered into a device before printing if Pairing is selected as the communication mode or if Encryption is On. 9 3 Press l or r to highlight Restore Defaults, then press OK.
Printer Care and Troubleshooting If you have problems or questions about how to use PictureMate, check the built-in help system: ● Checking and cleaning the print head (on page 57) Press l or r to highlight Help, then press OK. ● Aligning the print head (on page 58) Press l or r to select from the following:.
Checking and Cleaning the Print Head 4 Press l or r to select Nozzle Check and press OK. 5 Press 6 Check the pattern to see if there are any gaps or missing lines. If your print quality is not as good as it used to be—if photos are too light, are missing colors, or have lines running through them—PictureMate’s print head nozzles may need cleaning. You can check the nozzles and clean the print head if necessary.
● If the pattern has gaps or missing lines, select No then press OK to clean the print head. Cleaning takes about 60 seconds. PictureMate makes some noise and you see an Auto Cleaning message. in the printer list, click OK, and select Nozzle Check. 3 Follow the instructions on the screen to print a nozzle check pattern. 4 Check the pattern to see if there are any gaps or missing lines. If you don’t see any improvement after cleaning three times, see “Print Quality Problems” on page 64.

You see a confirmation screen: 5 Press You see the Head Alignment screen: Menu. 6 Look at the printed squares to determine which one is the most even, with no streaks or white lines. (You may need to use a magnifying glass.) 7 Press l or r to select the number for the best square (1 to 9) in set #1. Then press OK.
Aligning the Print Head Using the Computer 3 Follow the instructions on the screen to print the alignment pattern. You see a window like this: 4 Look at the printed squares to determine which one is the most even, with no streaks or white lines. (You may need to use a magnifying glass.) 5 Enter the number of the best square in each pattern (1 to 9) in the boxes on the screen. Then click Finish. You can align the print head using your computer.
If you can’t find a square without lines or streaks, choose the one that looks the best. Then click Realignment to print another alignment pattern and repeat this step. Note: The square you select becomes the middle square (#5) the next time you align the print head. Cleaning Inside PictureMate To make sure your pictures look their best, you may need to use a “cleaning sheet” to clean inside the printer. Typically, this is done only if you notice lines of ink smearing on the front and back of your prints.
Caution: Never use a hard or abrasive brush, or alcohol or thinner for cleaning; they can damage the components and case. Don’t get water on the components and don’t spray lubricants or oils inside PictureMate. Printing and Operation Problems The On light and photo viewer screen don’t turn on. ● Press the P On button to turn on PictureMate. ● Make sure the power cable and AC adapter are securely connected at both ends.
● Make sure paper is not jammed and is loaded correctly, and make sure the handle is not resting on the paper. See page 9. ● PictureMate cannot read progressive-scan JPEG files or RAW files. ● Make sure to format your memory card in your camera. ● If you access the card from your computer and delete pictures, the card may not work correctly with your camera. Always delete pictures using your camera.

Printing is too slow. ● It takes a few moments for PictureMate to process your images before printing them. ● If PictureMate is in a hot or sunny location, move it to a cooler place and try printing again. ● Make sure your system meets the requirements listed in “System Requirements” on page 74. ● To print over a network, see “Set Up Network Printing” on page 70 for instructions on setting up printing.
Your print is blurry or smeared. ● Use PictureMate photo paper to ensure proper saturation, absorption of ink, and quality. ● Be sure to print with the glossy or whiter side of the paper face up. ● The print head may need cleaning. See page 57. ● ● Make sure your paper isn’t damaged, old, dirty, or loaded face down. If it is, load new paper with the glossy or whiter side up. Colors in your photo are wrong or missing. ● Make sure the Color Effect setting is not set to B & W or Sepia. See page 21.
Problems With Paper Feeding Paper doesn’t eject fully or is wrinkled. ● Don’t load plain paper; this may damage PictureMate. ● Use only PictureMate photo paper or Epson Premium Photo Paper Glossy or Semigloss. (See page 5.) ● Store paper flat to help prevent curling. The paper may be damp. Load new paper. Paper doesn’t feed correctly or jams. ● If paper doesn’t feed, remove it, separate the sheets slightly, and reload it between the edge guides.
Uninstalling PictureMate Software Uninstalling From a Windows Computer You may need to uninstall and then reinstall your PictureMate software on your computer. This may be necessary when you upgrade your operating system, for example. However, you don’t need to uninstall this online User’s Guide. 1 Click or Start and select Programs or All Programs. 2 Select Epson or Epson Printers, then select Epson Printer Software Uninstall. 3 If necessary, click Continue, then go to the next step.
Uninstalling From a Macintosh 1 Quit all running applications. 2 Insert the PictureMate CD-ROM into your Macintosh. 3 Double-click the OSX folder. Set Up Network Printing These sections tell you how to set up PictureMate so that other computers on a network can print to it. Then, you must install the PictureMate software on each computer that will access it through the network. Note: These instructions are for small network users only. If you are on a large network and would like to share PictureMate, consult your network administrator. Setting Up a Shared Printer See the instructions below for Windows, or on page 72 for Macintosh.

How Many Photos Will I Get From a PictureMate Print Pack? Epson has packaged the PictureMate Photo Cartridge with a quantity of 4 × 6 PictureMate Photo Paper, so that purchasing supplies for PictureMate is convenient and affordable. The number of sheets of photo paper in your PictureMate Print Pack is stated on the Print Pack’s box. The photo ink cartridge in the Print Pack contains enough ink to allow borderless, color printing of about the stated number of sheets.
