Welcome! PictureMate® Pal is your easy-to-use, personal photo lab. Just insert a digital camera memory card and you’re ready to print brilliant, long-lasting photos. Because PictureMate Pal is light and portable, you can print with it almost anywhere. Plus, your PictureMate Pal photos are archival; generations from now your PictureMate Pal prints will be as vibrant as they are today.
Special Features If you have a Bluetooth®-enabled PDA, cell phone, or computer, you can send photos wirelessly to PictureMate Pal for printing using the optional Epson® Bluetooth Photo Print Adapter. (See page 31.) Printing with your PictureMate Pal becomes even easier with these special features: You can select all your photos for printing by pressing Select All, or select just the ones you want from the photo viewer screen. (See page 9.
Where to Find Information See your Start Here sheet to unpack, set up, and use your PictureMate Pal. Basics (this book) explains how to print photos directly from your memory card. It also covers how to print from your computer and other devices, replace the PictureMate 200 Series Print Pack, and solve problems. The on-screen User’s Guide installed from the CD provides comprehensive information and instructions for using PictureMate Pal.
Prepare to Print Before you print with PictureMate Pal, you need to: ● Load paper (below) ● Insert your memory card (see page 6) 2 Open the paper support. 3 Firmly press the Open button to open the output tray. When you finish printing, you can remove your memory card. (See page 7.) PictureMate Pal turns off it’s screen automatically to save power. See page 8 for details. Loading Paper Caution: Don’t load plain paper; this may damage PictureMate Pal. 1 Move the handle to the back.
4 Slide the edge guides outward. 7 Store any unused paper in the original package and keep it flat in a dry area to prevent curling. Note: When you need more paper, order a PictureMate 200 Series Print Pack. See page 33 for more information. Inserting Your Memory Card 5 6 Create a stack of up to 20 sheets of paper and separate the sheets slightly by fanning them. Place your paper into the slot between the edge guides with the glossy or whiter side up. Slide the edge guides inward slightly.

Saving Power If you are not using PictureMate Pal, the screen goes dark after 13 minutes. Press any button to turn it back on.
Choose Photos and Print PictureMate Pal’s photo viewer screen makes it easy to select the photos you want to print. Printing All Photos 1 Press the 2 To print more than one copy of each photo, press l or r to select the number of copies (up to 999). Select All button. You can also press Menu to adjust settings or print a proof sheet containing thumbnail images of all your photos. See page 12 for details. 3 Press Layout to select the layout of your photos on the paper.
Printing Selected Photos Printing Camera-Selected DPOF Photos 1 Press l or r to view the photo you want to print. 2 Press OK to select it. 3 If your camera supports DPOF (Digital Print Order Format), you can use it to pre-select the photos and copies you want to print. To print more than one copy of the photo, press OK to increase the number of copies (up to 999). Press Cancel to decrease the number. 4 Repeat steps 1 through 3 for each photo you want to print.
Storing and Displaying Your PictureMate Pal Prints Photos printed on PictureMate Pal photo paper are beautiful, long-lasting images. Follow these guidelines to make sure they will look great for generations. Storing Your Prints ● Do not rub the printed side of the photo. ● Do not stack photos with the printed sides touching. Displaying Your Prints ● Let prints sit for 24 hours before framing. ● To ensure prints will last as long as possible, display them under glass or in photo albums.
Do More With Your Photos By pressing the Menu or Layout button, you can: ● Choose from a variety of layouts (see below) ● Print in black and white or sepia (see page 13) ● Print photos with their date (see page 13) ● Enhance photos (see page 14) You can also print proof sheets containing thumbnail images of all your photos. Each proof sheet contains 20 images and their file names. Note: Photos printed without borders are automatically expanded. To control the amount of expansion, see page 38.
Printing Photos in Black and White or Sepia 6 Press OK. You see your photo with the color effect you selected. You can print your photo in black and white or in a sepia tone even when the original is in color. Your original image is not changed. 7 Press Layout to select the layout of your photos on the paper. 8 Press Note: A sepia print has a brownish, old-fashioned photo look. 9 Press l or r to review your selected photos on the Print Preview screen.
3 Press l or r to highlight Date Stamp and press OK. 4 Press l or r to select On and press OK. You see your photo and number of copies. 5 Press Layout to select the layout of your photos on the paper. 6 Press 7 Press l or r to review your selected photos on the Print Preview screen. 8 Press 1 Select the photos and number of copies you want to print. 2 Press Menu. 3 Press l or r to highlight Color Effect and press OK. 4 Press l or r to select PhotoEnhance and press OK. Print.
Save Your Photos and Print From a Computer To use PictureMate Pal with your computer, you must first: ● ● Install the PictureMate Pal software on your computer from the PictureMate Pal CD as described here. Connect PictureMate Pal to your computer with a USB cable. If you don’t have a USB cable, you can buy one from your local computer dealer or from Epson. Installing Software and Connecting PictureMate Pal DO NOT connect PictureMate Pal to your computer before installing the software.
4 After Windows starts up, insert the PictureMate Pal CD in your CD-ROM or DVD drive. 5 With Windows Vista, you see this screen Click Run Epsetup.exe, then click Continue at the User Account Control screen. 6 16 After a moment, you see this screen: Click Next. Note: If you see a screen like this one, click Cancel and disconnect PictureMate Pal from your computer. Then turn off your computer and begin again at step 3. 7 Read the license agreement screen and click Agree.
8 Click OK. After a moment, you see this screen: 9 Connect the USB cable to any open USB port on your computer. Then connect the other end to the USB port on the back of PictureMate Pal. Note: If you see a screen like this one, remove your memory card and click the X in the window to close it. 10 When you see the screen below, click No if you have another printer connected to your computer. If PictureMate Pal is your only printer, click Yes. The installer installs your PictureMate Pal software.
11 When you see a message that your printer driver is installed, click Next. Your on-screen User’s Guide is installed. 12 After a moment, you see this screen: Now you can: ● Save photos to your computer (see page 20) ● Print photos from your computer on PictureMate Pal (see page 20) Installing Software for Macintosh 1 Make sure PictureMate Pal does NOT have a memory card inserted in it. 2 Connect the USB cable to any open USB port on your Macintosh.
4 Turn on your Macintosh. 5 After the Macintosh starts up, insert the PictureMate Pal CD in your CD-ROM or DVD drive. 6 Double-click the PictureMate CD icon to open it, then double-click the PictureMate icon. You see a screen reminding you to connect PictureMate Pal. 7 Click Next. 8 Read the license agreement and click Agree. 9 Click Install Printer Driver, then follow the onscreen instructions to install the driver. 11 Follow the on-screen instructions to install the optional software.
18 Click Add. Saving Photos to a Computer 19 In OS X 10.4, select PictureMate PM 200. (In OS X You can connect PictureMate Pal to your computer and view, copy, or print files on the memory card as if it were a drive on your computer. You can even copy files from your computer to the memory card. 10.2 or 10.3, select EPSON USB at the top and PictureMate PM 200 below.) Make sure you’ve installed your software and connected PictureMate Pal to your computer.
Printing From a Windows Computer 3 You can print photos from an imaging application, the Windows Photo Gallery in Windows Vista (below), or the Picture and Fax Viewer in Windows XP (page 23). Click the Print icon at the top of the screen, then select Print from the drop-down menu that appears. Printing With the Windows Vista Photo Gallery 1 Locate the photo you want to print on your computer. 2 Right-click the photo, highlight Open With, and select Windows Photo Gallery.
● You see the printer settings window: You can change the Color Option and see the effects on the sample photo (the changes don’t affect your original). Auto Correction improves the quality of photos that are too dark or have a color cast. Sepia changes the colors to brown for an oldfashioned look. Sample photo Black & White changes color photos to black and white. 6 Choose from the following settings: ● ● 22 Select Borderless to print a photo without borders.
8 When you return to the Windows Photo Gallery, click Print to start printing. Printing With the Windows XP Picture and Fax Viewer During printing, this window appears on your computer screen showing the progress of your print job. You can cancel, pause, or resume printing, and view your Print Pack status. 1 Locate the photo you want to print on your computer. 2 Right-click the photo, highlight Open With, and select Windows Picture and Fax Viewer.
4 Click Next. 5 Select the photo(s) you want to print and click Next. Printing Preferences 6 24 Select EPSON PictureMate PM 200 and click Printing Preferences.

9 At the Photo Printing Wizard screen, click Next. During printing, this window appears on your computer screen showing the progress of your print job. You can cancel, pause, or resume printing, and view your Print Pack status. Cancel Pause or resume Full page photo print 10 Select Full page photo print and click Next.
Printing From a Macintosh 4 You can print your photos from any Macintosh imaging application. 1 Start your print program and open the photo you want to print. 2 From the File menu, select Page Setup. 3 Select PictureMate PM 200 from the Format for menu. Open the Paper Size menu and place your cursor on the 4 × 6 in option. You see extended options: ● Select 4 × 6 in (Borderless) to print without any borders. ● Select 4 × 6 in (Borders) to print with white borders all around.
8 Select Print Settings from the pop-up menu. 9 Choose from the following settings: ● Select Enhance Fine Details to bring out the fine details of a particularly intricate photo (printing may be slower). ● You can change the Color Option and see the effects on the sample photo (the changes don’t affect your original). Sample image Sepia changes the colors to brown for an oldfashioned look. Black & White changes a color photo to black and white.
10 You can also choose other options in the pop-up menu, including: ● Copies & Pages, to select the number of copies or a page range ● Summary, to view a list of all your selections 11 Click Print. 12 To monitor the progress of your print job, click the PictureMate PM 200 or Print Center icon when it appears in the dock. If you clicked the Print Center icon, double-click PictureMate PM 200. 13 From this window, you can do the following: ● To cancel printing, click the print job and click Delete.
Print From a Digital Camera or Bluetooth Device PictureMate Pal can print photos stored on a: 3 Turn on your camera. ● PictBridge- or USB DIRECT-PRINT-enabled digital camera (below) 4 Connect your camera’s USB cable to your camera and the port on the back of PictureMate Pal. ● Bluetooth-enabled device (requires an optional Bluetooth Photo Print adapter. See page 31) 5 Use your camera’s controls to select and print photos on PictureMate Pal. (See your camera manual for instructions.
6 When you are finished, disconnect your camera from PictureMate Pal before inserting a memory card in PictureMate Pal. Printing Wirelessly From a Bluetooth Device 1 Make sure PictureMate Pal is on but not printing. Caution: Do not connect or remove the Bluetooth Photo Print Adapter while it is communicating with device or while PictureMate Pal is printing; this may cause PictureMate Pal to malfunction. 2 Plug the adapter all the way into the the back of PictureMate Pal.
4 Select the photo you want to print from your Bluetooth device and send it to PictureMate Pal as follows: ● Windows: Send photos directly to PictureMate Pal with your Bluetooth file sharing program. See the documentation included with your computer’s Bluetooth adapter for details. ● Macintosh: Double-click Bluetooth File Exchange in your Utilities folder. Follow the on-screen steps to choose a photo file, discover PictureMate Pal, and send photos.
Replace Print Pack When PictureMate Pal needs a new Print Pack, you see a message on the photo viewer screen. The Print Pack contains a new photo cartridge and photo paper. When you need a new Print Pack, see these sections: ● Buy a PictureMate 200 Series Print Pack (right) ● Replace the Print Pack (see page 34) If you want to check the status of your Print Pack, see page 36. Tip: If you see a replacement message while printing, you can replace the Print Pack and continue the current print job.
Replacing the Print Pack Make sure you have a new PictureMate 200 Series Print Pack before you remove the old photo cartridge. Once you remove the cartridge, you must install the new one right away. 3 Slide the cartridge lever left, to the Release position. Caution: Before you replace the cartridge, read the “Photo Cartridge Safety Instructions” on page 52. 1 Make sure PictureMate Pal is on but not printing. 2 Open the cartridge door on the back of PictureMate Pal.
4 Pull out the cartridge and dispose of it properly. (For appropriate disposal, check local resources for recycling guidelines.) 5 Remove the new photo cartridge from its package. Don’t touch the green chip Caution: Don’t touch the small green circuit board. Install the photo cartridge immediately. If you leave a cartridge unpacked for a long time before using it, normal printing may not be possible. 6 Slide the cartridge straight into the slot, label side up, until it clicks into place.
7 PictureMate Pal starts charging and displays a message. Slide the lever all the way right, to the Lock position. 9 When it’s finished charging, press OK. Checking Print Pack Status You can check the status of your Print Pack at any time. 1 Press Menu. 2 Press l or r to highlight PrintPk Status and press OK. You see the status displayed on the photo viewer screen. 3 Press Cancel to exit. Caution: If the cartridge is not inserted correctly, PictureMate Pal will not be able to print.
Take PictureMate Pal With You PictureMate Pal’s handle makes it easy to carry short distances. If PictureMate Pal is going to travel a longer distance, pack it carefully to protect it from damage. Caution: Keep PictureMate Pal out of the sun and don’t leave it in your car or other location where it can get too hot or too cold. Otherwise PictureMate Pal may be damaged or ink may leak. 1 Press the Pal. 2 Wait until the On light goes out, then unplug the power cable from the power outlet.
Set PictureMate Pal Preferences You can change the way PictureMate Pal works as follows: Adjusting Borderless Expansion ● Adjust the amount of expansion used in borderless printing ● Turn print preview on or off When you print borderless photos, your images are automatically expanded. If too much of your photos are cut off around the edges, you can adjust the amount of expansion. ● Adjust the photo viewer screen contrast 1 Press Menu.
Turning Print Preview On or Off When Print Preview is On and you press Print, you see a screen that lets you confirm your selected photos, number of copies, layout, and other settings. Then you press Print again to start printing. When Print Preview is Off, PictureMate Pal does not display a preview screen before printing. You can press Print just once to start printing. Adjusting the Photo Viewer Screen Contrast If the screen is too light or too dark, you can adjust it. 1 Press Menu.
Printer Care and Troubleshooting If you have a problem with your PictureMate Pal, or you want to improve print quality, read these sections: Note: If you see a Print Pack low message on the photo viewer, you can’t clean the print head until you replace the Print Pack.
5 6 Press OK again to clean the print head. Cleaning takes about 60 seconds. PictureMate Pal makes some noise and you see a Cleaning message. You can also turn PictureMate Pal off and wait overnight to allow any dried ink to soften. Then try cleaning the print head again. When cleaning is complete, PictureMate Pal prints a nozzle check pattern. Aligning the Print Head Check the pattern to see if there are any gaps in the lines.
5 Press Print. The following alignment pattern is printed: Cleaning PictureMate Pal Best pattern To keep PictureMate Pal working at its best, you should clean it several times a year. Follow these steps: Misaligned pattern 1 Turn off PictureMate Pal, unplug the power cable, and disconnect the power adapter and any USB cables. 2 Remove all paper, then use a soft brush to clean any dust or dirt from the paper feeder and output tray. 3 Clean the PictureMate Pal exterior with a soft, damp cloth.
Error Messages Message If your PictureMate Pal has any problems, check the screen for a message. If you see one of these messages, here’s what to do: Message Not initial cartridge. Use initial cartridge. Print Pack is low. Replace Print Pack soon. or Print Pack is very low. Replace Print Pack soon. Your Print Pack is running low. If you are trying to clean the print head, you must replace the Print Pack first. Purchase a PictureMate 200 Series Print Pack and replace it. See page 33.
Message What to Do Error in data. Printouts may be affected. Data in your photo files may be corrupted and may affect your printouts. Bluetooth adapter error. Disconnect the adapter, then reconnect it to PictureMate Pal. See page 31. The image is too large. The image you are trying to print from a Bluetooth device is too large. Print the photo from a memory card or your computer instead. The image is too complex. The image you are trying to print from a Bluetooth device is too complex.
PictureMate Pal sounds as though it is printing, but nothing prints. Printing is too slow. ● It takes a few moments for PictureMate Pal to process your images before printing them. The print head may need cleaning. See page 40. ● ● PictureMate Pal won’t work properly if it’s tilted or at an angle. Place it on a flat, stable surface. If PictureMate Pal is in a hot or sunny location, move it to a cooler place and try printing again.
Print Quality Problems Your print is grainy. You see banding (light lines) in your prints. The print head may need aligning. See page 41. ● The print head may need cleaning. See page 40. Your print is faint or has gaps in the image. ● Make sure the glossy side of the paper is face up. ● The print head may need cleaning. See page 40. ● The Print Pack may need replacing. See page 33. ● ● The print head may need aligning. See page 41. The photo cartridge may be old or low.
Problems With Paper Feeding Paper doesn’t eject fully or is wrinkled. ● Don’t load plain paper; this may damage PictureMate Pal. ● Use only PictureMate 200 Series photo paper or Epson Premium Photo Paper Glossy. ● Store paper flat to help prevent curling. The paper may be damp. Load new paper. Paper doesn’t feed correctly or jams. ● Make sure the handle is not resting on the paper.
The wrong photo is printed. ● If your camera supports DPOF, you can pre-select photos so PictureMate Pal knows exactly what to print. See page 10. ● If your camera supports PictBridge or USB DIRECTPRINT printing, you can print from the camera. See page 30. ● For instructions on selecting photos, see page 9. Too many copies print. Make sure that the Copies option in your software or on PictureMate Pal is set for the number of copies you want to print.

● Avoid places subject to dust, shock, or vibration. ● Leave enough room around the printer to allow for sufficient ventilation. ● Place the AC adapter near a wall outlet where the plug can be easily unplugged. ● Do not place or store the printer or the AC adapter outdoors. ● Do not block or cover the vents and openings in the printer. ● Power supply cords should be placed to avoid abrasions, cuts, fraying, crimping, and kinking.

Photo Viewer Screen Safety Instructions ● The screen contains a few small bright or dark spots. These are normal and do not mean that the screen is damaged in any way. ● Only use a dry, soft cloth to clean the screen. Do not use liquid or chemical cleansers. ● If the screen is damaged, contact your dealer. If the liquid crystal solution gets on your hands, wash them thoroughly with soap and water. If the liquid crystal solution gets into your eyes, flush them immediately with water.
What This Warranty Does Not Cover: This warranty does not apply to refurbished or reconditioned products. This warranty covers only normal use in the United States and Canada. Using this product for continuous production or similar high duty purposes is not considered normal use; damage, maintenance or service from such use will not be covered under this warranty. This warranty is not transferable.
How Many Photos Will I Get From a PictureMate Print Pack? Epson has packaged the PictureMate Photo Cartridge with a quantity of 4 × 6 PictureMate Photo Paper, so that purchasing supplies for PictureMate is convenient and affordable. The number of sheets of photo paper in your PictureMate Print Pack is stated on the Print Pack’s box. The photo ink cartridge in the Print Pack contains enough ink to allow borderless, color printing of about the stated number of sheets.
This Satisfaction Guarantee also applies to the PictureMate Photo Cartridge and PictureMate Photo Paper which were included in the box with your PictureMate printer, if you are dissatisfied because you receive fewer prints with the cartridge than the number of sheets included. The per-sheet refund in that case is 27 cents.
