A spring within the microswitch holds the lever so that it juts out into the paper path. When roll
paper moves along the path, it presses the lever back out of the path, causing the microswitch
contact to open. When paper runs out, the spring pulls the lever back into position, closing the
contact on the microswitch.

Roll paper nearend detector mechanism
This mechanism consists of a nearend detector lever and a microswitch. The mechanism is
mounted on the side of the roll paper guide ("Paper guide, roll paper"), and serves to detect the
amount of paper remaining on the roll.
A spring inside of the microswitch presses the lever against the side of the paper roll. As long as
there is sufficient paper on the roll, the lever keeps the microswitch contact closed. As paper
runs out, the edge of the lever moves into the paper core. In this state, the microswitch contact is
open and detects paper-out.
