Each connector has only one correct orientation. Inserting a connector in the wrong orientation may damage both devices connected by the cable.
AL-C500 Series d 50 cm e 13 cm User's Guide To install and use any of the following options, you will need the indicated amount of additional space. 550-Sheet Paper Cassette Unit adds 13.4 cm (5.3 in.) to the bottom of the printer. 1100-Sheet Paper Cassette Unit adds 35.1 cm (13.8 in.) to the bottom of the printer. 1000-Sheet Stapler/Stacker Unit adds 47.8 cm (18.8 in.) to the left of the printer.
AL-C500 Series User's Guide Using the printer ❏ Be careful not to touch the fuser, which is marked ! (CAUTION), or the surrounding areas. If the printer has been in use, the fuser and the surrounding areas may be very hot. If you must touch one of these areas, turn off the printer and wait 30 minutes to allow the heat to subside before doing so. *! (CAUTION) ❏ Be careful not to touch the parts, which are marked ! (CAUTION) as shown in the illustration below.

(CAUTION) ❏ Do not insert your hand deep into the fuser unit as some components are sharp and may cause injury. ❏ Never push objects of any kind through cabinet slots as they may touch dangerous voltage points or short out parts that could result in a risk of fire or electric shock. ❏ When optional paper cassettes are installed, do not open two or more paper cassettes at the same time.

Avoid locations subject to extreme or rapid changes in temperature or humidity. ❏ When removing the photoconductor unit, do not expose it to sunlight at all and avoid exposing it to room light for more than three minutes. The photoconductor unit contains a light-sensitive drum.
AL-C500 Series User's Guide Ozone safety Ozone emission Ozone gas is generated by laser printers as a by-product of the printing process. Ozone is produced only when the printer is printing. Ozone exposure limit The Epson laser printer generates less than 3 mg/h of continuous printing.

AL-C500 Series User's Guide Printer Features Power saving performance The printer has an advanced power saving feature that helps you reduce electricity consumption. In the power off mode, the printer consumes about 0.3 W by disabling almost all operations. For a detailed explanation, see “Energy Saver Menu” on page 87. Print Job Arranger This function allows printing settings for several documents created by different applications at the same time.

If you use special media such as envelopes, see also “Selecting and Using Print Media” on page 34. For specifications or details about the paper types and sizes, see “Paper” on page 201. c Important: Do not let the paper’s edge slide across your skin because the edge of the paper may cut you.

Note: After loading paper, set the Cassette1 Size and Cassette1 Type settings to match the loaded paper size and paper type on the control panel. For details, see “Tray Menu” on page 65. Output tray The output tray is located on the top of the printer. Since printouts are output face-down, this tray is also referred to as the face-down tray. Up to 500 sheets can be stacked when using the A4-size plain paper.
AL-C500 Series User's Guide Note: Since the quality of any particular brand or type of media may be changed by the manufacturer at any time, Epson cannot guarantee the quality of any type of media. Always test samples of media stock before purchasing large quantities or printing large jobs.

Make a trial print run before you print on a lot of envelopes. ❏ Duplex printing is not available for envelopes. ❏ The resolution is reduced to 600 dpi when printing on envelopes. ❏ When printing on envelopes, open cover B, and then push down lever J until it stops. It may reduce the wrinkles in the envelopes.

AL-C500 Series User's Guide Cancelling a Print Job From the printer To cancel a print job on the printer’s control panel, see “Canceling Printing” on page 107. From the computer For Windows users Double-click your printer’s icon on the taskbar. Select the job in the list, then click Cancel from the Document menu. Setting the Print Quality You can change the print quality of printouts through settings in the printer driver.
AL-C500 Series User's Guide Using the Automatic setting For Windows users 1. Click the Basic Settings tab. 2. Click Automatic, then choose desired printing quality. 3. Click OK. Using the Advanced setting For Windows users 1. Click the Basic Settings tab.

When you choose a predefined setting, other settings such as Print Quality and Color Management are set automatically. Changes are shown in the current settings list on the Setting Information dialog box that appears by pressing the Setting Info button on the Optional Settings tab.
AL-C500 Series User's Guide Note: ❏ You cannot use a predefined setting name for your custom settings. ❏ The saved custom settings can only be used with the printer driver you saved them to. Even if multiple printer names are set for a printer driver, the settings can be available only for the printer name in which you saved the settings. ❏ You cannot delete predefined settings.

Monochrome Model Compatibility mode When the following occurs while printing in black-and-white, use this function. ❏ The text and lines are too thin. ❏ The print data size is too large. 1. Click the Basic Settings tab. 2. Select Advanced, then click More Settings to open the More Settings dialog box. 3. Select Black as Color, select the Monochrome Model Compatibility check box, and then click OK.

If you want to resize pages automatically to fit the output paper, select the desired paper size from the Output Paper drop-down list. If you want to resize pages by a specified magnification, select the Zoom To check box, then specify the percentage. You can also select the output paper size. 4.

Printing with an overlay This function allows you to print a standard form or letterhead onto the original document. Note: ❏ This function is for Windows only.

Type the form name in the Form Name box and its description in the Description box. 5. For registering form data in the Paper Source, see step 6 in “Creating an overlay” on page 51. If overlay form data is not registered in the Paper Source or if you want to make detailed settings, follow the steps below. 1. Click the Advanced Layout tab. 2. Select the Form Overlay check box. 3.

The optional CompactFlash memory installed on the printer is used as the storage for this product. This function is available only when the following conditions are satisfied. ❏ The optional CompactFlash memory is installed on the printer. The CompactFlash memory must be at least 4 GB.

Click Back to close the Register to Storage dialog box. 9. Click OK. Printing an overlaid document 1. Click the Advanced Layout tab. 2. Select the Form Overlay check box. 3. Select the Overlay Print check box, then click More Settings. The Form Selection dialog box appears. 4.

Also, if you need a sample print-out of the form data, enter the form name and click the Print Sample button. ❏ You can use the Browse button if the printer is connected through a network. Install EPSON Web-To-Page from the printer Software Disc. Note: This software is not available for Windows 7, Vista, XP x64, Server 2008, and Server 2003. After you install EPSON Web-To-Page, the menu bar is displayed on the Microsoft Internet Explorer Toolbar.

You can print the same job several times. Verify Job Lets you print one copy now to verify the content. You can print multiple copies later. Stored Job* Lets you store the print job on the printer’s memory without printing it now. Confidential Job Lets you apply a password to the print job.
AL-C500 Series User's Guide Chapter 3 Using the Control Panel Using the Control Panel Menus When to make control panel settings In general, printer driver settings override settings made using the control panel. You should make the following settings by using the control panel because these settings cannot be made in the printer driver.

Press the r Right button to carry out the operation indicated by an item, such as printing a configuration status sheet or resetting the printer, or to view the settings available for an item, such as paper sizes or emulation modes. Use the u Up and d Down buttons to scroll through available settings, then press the r Right button to select a setting and return to the previous level. Press the l Left button to return to the previous level without changing the setting.

AL-C500 Series User's Guide Network Status Sheet Prints a sheet showing the working status of the network. AUX Status Sheet Prints a sheet showing the working status of the optional interface. USB ExtI/FStatusSht Prints a sheet showing the working status of the USB interface. PS3 Status Sheet Prints a sheet showing information about the PS3 mode such as the PS3 version.

When Normal is selected as the MP Mode, the MP tray has the highest priority as the paper source. If you select Last, the MP tray has the lowest priority. Manual Feed Allows you to select the manual feed mode for the MP tray. Copies Designates the number of copies to be printed, from 1 through 999.

When you turn this item on, the printer keeps printing even if the image size exceeds the printable area for the specified paper size. This may cause smudges because of the toner that is not transferred onto the paper properly. When this item is turned off, the printer stops printing if a paper size error occurs.

Can’t Print Duplex The printer has encountered problems during duplex printing.

Cooling Down The printer is cooling down. This is not an error message, and will clear itself.

Either the CompactFlash memory is not installed correctly, or the maximum number of form overlay files has been reached. Confirm that the optional CompactFlash memory is installed correctly, or delete any form overlay files you no longer need, and then try storing the new overlay again. To clear this error, select Clear Warning from the control panel’s Reset Menu.

To prevent this problem from recurring, add more memory to your printer as described in “Memory modules” on page 208, or reduce the resolution of the image to be printed.

Load paper of the size (sssss) into the paper source. Paper Set tttt sssss The paper loaded in the specified paper source (tttt) does not match the required paper size (sssss).

Print Overrun The required time to process the print data exceeded the print engine speed because the current page is too complex. Press the Start/Stop button to resume printing, or press the W Pause/Cancel button to cancel the print job.

To clear this error, remove the jammed paper in the paper ejection part of the stapler/stacker unit, and then open and close cover M.
