ESI Communications Servers Hardware Installation Manual Ordering and installing PRI circuits
J.2
• Service termination — ESI recommends that the PRI circuit be terminated on an eight-pin RJ-68 (i.e., “Smart
Jack”). If an RJ-68 isn’t available, you may use an eight-pin RJ-48 jack. If you use an external CSU (channel
service unit), be sure to turn off the CSU in the ESI system.
Important: ESI recommends that, when you connect a cable between the T1/PRI and a CSU or Smart Jack, you
use Category 5 (or better) twisted-pair cable with a length of at least six feet.
• Span type — Use DSX-1 when the cable length to a repeater is less than 655 feet (“short-haul”). [A CSU,
multiplexer, or Smart Jack is considered a repeater.] Use DS-1 for longer distances to a repeater. (See next
item, “Line build-out.”)
• Line build-out (LBO) — Settings to compensate for distance to nearest repeater.
ESI systems support both “short-haul” and “long-haul” (attention settings up to -22.5 dB). Although ESI
systems can support both types of LBO, “short-haul” settings are typically used.

(www.esi-estech.com/Resellers/tech), you can download a PDF version — listed as Technical Update #176,
from which this section is derived — that can be filled out on a PC using Adobe Reader.]
