Installation Recommendations

Phillips recommends installation in accordance with applicable ASTM standards and using prevalent industry standards.

General Installation Guidelines

Phillips metal corner beads and trims can be installed using a variety of methods. The methods listed below are

guidelines. Phillips recommends you test which method works best for you. Some metal bead products require more

detailed installation instructions than are listed here.

Method 1: Stapling

1. For regular drywall metal corner beads, drywall does not need to be set back.

2. Install molded corners first if they are being utilized for your project (see separate corner cap installation guide).

3. For doors, windows or special lengths, cut the bead to length and dry fit.

a) Prevent overlap of the mud flanges by snipping back.

b) Dry fit the bead.

4. Staple each mud flange every 6-10” with 1/2" crown staples.

5. No primer is needed. Finish as usual.

6. For cold weather winter applications, please refer to the installation recommendations in the Gypsum Association

GA-220-06 of 40°F or warmer.

Method 2: Fastening with screws or nails

1. Follow steps 1, 2 and 3 above.

2. Position the bead on the wall.

3. Fasten the bead with screws or nails using the nail holes (small hole).

4. Do not space nails or screws any farther than 9”.

5. Make sure the nail or screw dimples the bead enough so a smooth layer of compound can be applied over the screw

or nail head.

6. Apply the first coat of mud.

7. Finish as usual.

8. For cold weather winter applications, please refer to the installation recommendations in the Gypsum Association

GA- 220-06 of 50°F or warmer.

Method 3: Clinch-on tool

1. Follow steps 1, 2 and 3 from Method 1.

2. Place bead in position.

3. Place clinch-on tool over the square corner bead.

4. Hit tool with a rubber mallet crimping the square corner bead to the wall.

5. Repeat this no more than every 9”.

6. Finish as usual.

7. For cold weather winter applications, please refer to the installation recommendations in the Gypsum Association

GA-220-06 of 50°F or warmer.
