Installation Instructions & Applications for Fence Stays
Fence Stays are designed to keep barbed and barbless wire fence evenly spaced. They are
Class 1 Galvanized for corrosion resistance and reduce the quantity of fence posts needed.
Fence Stays are available in 36”, 42”, and 48” lengths, to accommodate a wide variety of
barbed wire and barbless wire fence designs. This instruction guide assumes that the barbed
or barbless wire is already installed.

Barbed and Barbless Wire Fence Categories
Barbed and Barbless wire fences are generally classified in two categories: standard barbed wire fences and
suspension barbed wire fences.
Standard barbed wire fences usually have posts spaced 10 to 12 feet apart and use three to five strands of wire.
Using this approach, Fence Stays are not required. As a fence ages, Fence Stays can be used between the posts
to provide added support to the barbed or barbless wires.
Suspension barbed wire fences consist of four to six strands of barbed wire. Each strand is stretched taut so there
is no more than three inches of sag between posts. The suspended barbed wires are held apart by twisted Fence
Stays spaced approximately 10 to 12 feet apart. Line posts are spaced from 50 to 60 feet apart. The suspension
barbed wire fence sways back and forth in the wind or when animals hit it. The swaying motion helps keep animals
away from the fence and discourages them from fighting through it. For this reason the lower end of the stays must
not touch the ground or the effectiveness of the suspension fence will be reduced.
Common spacing between horizontal Barbed or Barbless wire is shown to the
right. The length of the Fence Stay required is the ones slightly longer than the
distance between the top wire and the bottom wire.
Installation of Fence Stays should not require any tools. It is recommended
that heavy fencing gloves be worn when handling barbed wire fencing. Fence
Stays should be installed every 5 to 10 feet along a suspension fence. A
sample is shown in the picture to the right.
Fence Stays are twisted with one closed end and one open end.
Select a position along the fence to install the Fence Stay.
Starting at the top wire, place the open end of the Fence Stay
on the top wire and start turning the Fence Stay in a cork-screw
fashion. The Fence Stay will interlace its way onto the top wire.
As it nears the next wire, continue to cork-screw the fence stay onto the next
wire. There should be very little tension created by the Fence Stay. Continue
in this manner until the Fence Stay is interlace with all barbed or barbless
wires. Ensure that the Fence Stay does not touch the ground.
