If due to unusual natural events (floods, seas storm, etc.) the device has been affected by water and mud, it must necessarily be replaced.
F0E0030m F0E0028m INDEX IMPORTANT Never travel with a child sitting on the passenger’s lap with a single belt to protect them both. Do not fasten other objects to the body. CAR TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS MAINTENANCE IN AN EMERGENCY WARNING LIGHTS AND MESSAGES IMPORTANT The belt should not be twisted, make sure that it is taut and adheres to the passenger’s body. The upper part should pass over the shoulder and cross the chest diagonally.
DASHBOARD AND CONTROLS SAFETY DEVICES CORRECT USE OF THE CAR WARNING LIGHTS AND MESSAGES ❒ Always use the belt with the tape taut and never twisted; make sure that it is free to run without impediments. ❒ After a serious accident, replace the belt being worn at that time, even if it does not appear damaged. Always replace the seat belts if pretensioners have been activated. ❒ To clean the belts, wash by hand with neutral soap, rinse and leave to dry in the shade.
SERIOUS DANGER Should it be absolutely necessary to carry a baby on the front passenger seat with a child's seat with the cradle facing backwards, deactivate the passenger's air bags (front and side on the seat, where provided) using the key switch and then check warning light F on the cluster to make sure that deactivation has actually took place (see paragraph “ Manual deactivation of passenger's front air bag”).
DASHBOARD AND CONTROLS GROUP 0 and 0+ SAFETY DEVICES The cradle is restrained by the car seat belts, as shown in the figure and in turn it must restrain the child with its own belts. CORRECT USE OF THE CAR Babies up to 13 kg must be carried facing backwards on a cradle seat, which, supporting the head, does not induce stress on the neck in the event of sharp deceleration.
DASHBOARD AND CONTROLS GROUP 2 Starting from 15 kg to 25 kg in weight, children may be restrained directly by the car belts. F0E0638m WARNING LIGHTS AND MESSAGES GROUP 3 For children from 22 kg up to 36 kg the size of the child’s chest no longer requires a support to space the child’s back from the seat back. F0E0639m The figure is only an example for mounting. Attain to the instructions for fastening which must be enclosed with the specific child restraint system you are using.
DASHBOARD AND CONTROLS PASSENGER SEAT COMPLIANCE WITH REGULATIONS ON CHILD’S SEAT USE Fiat Multipla complies with the new European Directive 2000/3/EC regulating child’s seat assembling on the different car seats according to the table below. INDEX TECHNICAL CAR SPECIFICATIONS MAINTENANCE IN AN EMERGENCY WARNING LIGHTS AND MESSAGES CORRECT USE OF THE CAR SAFETY DEVICES Key for the table.
❒ If the passenger’s air bag is deactivated always check the warning light F on the cluster to make sure that it has actually been deactivated. ❒ While travelling, do not let the child sit incorrectly or release the belts. ❒ Passengers should never carry children on their laps. No-one, however strong they are, can hold a child in the event of a crash. ❒ In case of an accident, replace the seat with a new one.
DASHBOARD AND CONTROLS PRESETTING FOR MOUNTING THE “ISOFIX TYPE” CHILD RESTRAINT SYSTEM SAFETY DEVICES Fiat Multipla is created preset for mounting the Isofix type child restraint system, a new European standardised system for mounting child restraints. CORRECT USE OF THE CAR Isofix type child restraint system covers three groups: 0, 0+ and 1.
DASHBOARD AND CONTROLS FITTING THE ISOFIX TYPE CHILD’S SEAT Groups 0 and 0+ SAFETY DEVICES For children of the 0, 0+ weight group (babies up to 13 kg), the child’s seat is facing backwards and the child is restrained by the child’s seat belts (D).
DASHBOARD AND CONTROLS Group 1 As the child grows, passing to weight group 1 (9-18 kg), refit the child’s seat facing forwards following the installation instructions.
Front airbags are designed to protect car’s occupants in front crashes and therefore non-activation in other types of collisions (side collisions, rear shunts, rollovers, etc.) is not a system malfunction. In case of crash, an electronic control unit, when required, triggers the inflation of the cushion according to the severity of the collision. The cushion immediately inflates, placing itself as a protection between the body of the front occupants and the structure that could cause injuries.
DASHBOARD AND CONTROLS Driver’s and passenger’s airbags have been designed and calibrated to improve the protection of a person wearing seat belts. CORRECT USE OF THE CAR SAFETY DEVICES At their maximum inflation, their volume fills most of the space between the steering wheel and the driver and between the dashboard and the passenger.
DASHBOARD AND CONTROLS MANUAL DEACTIVATION OF PASSENGER’S FRONT AIRBAG Should it be absolutely necessary to carry a child on the front seat, the passenger’s airbag on the car can be deactivated. The key can be inserted and removed in both positions. F0E0105m IMPORTANT Operate the switch only when the engine is not running and the ignition key is removed.
DASHBOARD AND CONTROLS SIDE AIR BAGS (Side bag/Window bag) (where provided) It consists of an instant-inflation cushion housed in the back rest of the front seat to increase protection of the occupants’ chest in the event of a side crash of medium-high severity. F0E0223m IMPORTANT In the event of side crash, you can obtain the best protection by the system keeping a correct position on the seat, allowing thus correct window bag unfolding.
WARNING Expiration dates of pyrotechnic charge and coil contact are indicated on the label inside the lower oddment compartment. As these dates approach, contact Fiat Dealership to have them replaced. WARNING Never rest head, arms and elbows on the door, on the windows and in the windowbag area to prevent possible injuries during the inflation phase. WARNING Never lean head, arms and elbows out of window.
WARNING IN AN EMERGENCY INDEX TECHNICAL CAR SPECIFICATIONS MAINTENANCE 134 If when turning the ignition key to MAR, the warning light ¬ does not turn on or if it stays on when travelling there could be a failure in safety systems; in this event air bags or pretensioners could not trigger in case of impact or, in a minor number of cases, they could trigger accidentally. Contact Fiat Dealership immediately to have the system checked.
Never wash seat backrests with pressurised water or steam (by hand or at automatic seat washing stations). WARNING The front air bag is triggered for shocks greater in magnitude than the pretensioners. For impacts between these two thresholds, it is therefore normal that only the pretensioners are triggered. WARNING Do not hook rigid objects to the coat hooks and to the support handles. WARNING The air bag does not substitute the seat belts, but only increases their effectiveness.

212 INDEX CAR TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS MAINTENANCE IN AN EMERGENCY WARNING LIGHTS AND MESSAGES CORRECT USE OF THE CAR SAFETY DEVICES DASHBOARD AND CONTROLS 1. Engine oil 2. battery 3. brake fluid 4. windscreen washer fluid 5. engine coolant 6. power steering fluid.
DASHBOARD AND CONTROLS ENGINE OIL The engine oil level must be checked with the car on level ground and while the engine is still hot (approximately 5 minutes after turning it off). ❒ Clean it with a cloth that does not leave threads or other impurities. ❒ Put the dipstick into its seat pushing it down. 100 16v version F0E0166m JTD 120 version F0E0167m WARNING LIGHTS AND MESSAGES The space between the MIN and MAX marks corresponds to about one litre of oil.
DASHBOARD AND CONTROLS Max engine oil consumption is usually 400 grams every 1000 km. IMPORTANT The oil consumption depends on driving style and the conditions under which the car is used. When the car is new, the engine needs to run in, therefore the engine oil consumption can only be considered stabilised after the first 5000 ÷ 6000 km.
DASHBOARD AND CONTROLS IMPORTANT If a routine check reveals that the oil level is above the MAX mark, contact Fiat Dealership to have the correct level restored. CAR TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS MAINTENANCE Used engine oil and filter contain harmful substances for the environment. Contact Fiat Dealership to have the oil and filter changed, as they are equipped to dispose of the waste oil and filters respecting the nature and the law.
DASHBOARD AND CONTROLS ENGINE COOLANT The coolant level shall be checked with cold engine and shall be between the MIN and MAX marks on the reservoir. SAFETY DEVICES If the level is low, pour slowly a mixture of 50% water and 50% FL Selenia PARAFLU UP through the filler neck until reaching the MAX mark. CORRECT USE OF THE CAR A 50-50 mixture of PARAFLU UP and water gives freeze protection to –35°C.
DASHBOARD AND CONTROLS WINDSCREEN/REAR WINDOW/HEADLIGHT WASHER FLUID ❒ 30% TUTELA PROFESSIONAL SC 35 and 70% water in summer. ❒ 50% TUTELA PROFESSIONAL SC 35 and 50% water in winter. F0E0683m Do not travel with the windscreen washer reservoir empty. The windscreen washer is fundamental for improving visibility. WARNING Certain commercial additives for windscreen washers are inflammable. The engine compartment contains hot components which may set it on fire.
DASHBOARD AND CONTROLS POWER STEERING FLUID Check that the fluid level is between the MIN and MAX marks on the reservoir with the car parked on level ground and engine cold. SAFETY DEVICES When the oil is hot the level may exceed the MAX mark. CORRECT USE OF THE CAR If necessary add oil making sure that it has the same specifications as the oil already in the system.
DASHBOARD AND CONTROLS BRAKE FLUID CORRECT USE OF THE CAR F0E00685m Symbol π on the container indicates synthetic brake fluid, distinguishing it from the mineral kind. Using mineral fluids irreversibly damages the special braking system rubber seals. WARNING Brake fluid is poisonous and highly corrosive. In the event of accidental contact, wash the parts involved immediately with neutral soap and water, then rinse thoroughly. Call the doctor immediately if the fluid is swallowed.
DASHBOARD AND CONTROLS AIR CLEANER REPLACEMENT Petrol version F0E0172m POLLEN FILTER WARNING LIGHTS AND MESSAGES CORRECT USE OF THE CAR SAFETY DEVICES Undo the four screws, remove cover (A) and take out the filtering element (B) to be replaced.
Fiat Multipla battery is of the “Limited maintenance” type: under normal conditions of use it does not require topping up with distilled water. IMPORTANT The presence of water in the fuel circuit can severely damage the injection system and make the engine misfire. If the warning light c turns on, contact a Fiat Dealership as soon as possible to have the bleeding operation carried out. Check the electrolyte level (and top up if required) at the intervals shown in the Service Schedule in this section.
DASHBOARD AND CONTROLS SAFETY DEVICES CORRECT USE OF THE CAR WARNING LIGHTS AND MESSAGES IN AN EMERGENCY INDEX CAR TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS MAINTENANCE 222 CHANGING THE BATTERY If required, replace the battery with a genuine spare part having the same specifications. If a battery with different specifications is fitted, the service intervals given in the “Service Schedule” in this section will no longer be valid. Refer to the instructions provided by the battery’s Manufacturer.
❒ before performing any operation on the electrical system, disconnect the battery negative cable; ❒ battery terminals shall always be perfectly tightened. IMPORTANT A battery which is kept at a charge of less than 50% (optical indicator with dark colour without green area in the middle) for any length of time will be damaged by sulphation leading to a reduction in cranking power. In fact, since these devices continue absorbing energy even when the ignition key is off, they gradually run down the battery.
DASHBOARD AND CONTROLS WHEELS AND TYRES TYRE PRESSURE Incorrect pressure causes abnormal tyre wear: (A) - Correct pressure: tread evenly worn. (B) - Underinflated tyre: shoulder tread wear. (C) - Overinflated tyre: centre tread wear. Tyres must be replaced when the tread wears down to 1.6 mm. In any case, comply with the regulations in force in the country where the car is being driven.
WARNING If the pressure is too low the tyre overheats and this can cause it serious damage. WARNING Do not cross switch the tyres, moving them from the right of the car to the left and vice versa. WARNING Never submit alloy rims to repainting treatments requiring to use temperatures exceeding 150°C since the mechanical properties of the wheels could be impaired. CAR TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS MAINTENANCE Remember that road holding depends also on the correct tyre inflating pressure.
DASHBOARD AND CONTROLS As far as the brake system and fuel rubber hoses are concerned, carefully follow the Service Schedule in this section. Indeed ozone, high temperatures and prolonged lack of fluid in the system may cause hardening and cracking of the hoses, with possible leaks. Careful control is therefore necessary. CORRECT USE OF THE CAR SAFETY DEVICES RUBBER TUBING Periodically clean the rubber part using special products; TUTELA PROFESSIONAL SC 35 is recommended.
DASHBOARD AND CONTROLS Changing the windscreen wiper blades press tabs (A) (set aside the blade) and remove the blade from the arm; ❒ Fit the new blade by inserting it into the special slot in the arm. Make sure it is properly locked into place. F0E0723m Changing the rear window blade WARNING LIGHTS AND MESSAGES ❒ Lift the cover (C). CORRECT USE OF THE CAR ❒ ❒ Loosen screw (D).
DASHBOARD AND CONTROLS SPRAY NOZZLES If there is no jet of fluid, first make sure there is fluid in the reservoir: see “Checking fluids” in this section. The windscreen jets are directed by adjusting the angle of the nozzles. F0E0689m IN AN EMERGENCY INDEX CAR TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS MAINTENANCE 228 Fluid jets shall be directed at about 250 mm from the window upper edge. Rear window wiper nozzle holder is set at the base of the rear window wiper. Nozzles are fixed and cannot be adjusted.
❒ seasonal environment conditions. In addition, the abrasiveness of dust in the atmosphere and sand carried by the wind as well as mud and stones kicked up by other cars must not be underestimated. On your Fiat Multipla, Fiat implemented the best manufacturing technologies to effectively protect the bodywork against corrosion. ❒ spraying of plastic parts, with a protective function, in the most exposed points: underdoor, inner fender parts, edges, etc.
DASHBOARD AND CONTROLS SAFETY DEVICES CORRECT USE OF THE CAR WARNING LIGHTS AND MESSAGES IN AN EMERGENCY INDEX CAR TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS MAINTENANCE 230 ADVICE FOR PRESERVING THE BODYWORK Paint Paintwork does not only serve an aesthetic purpose, but also protects the underlying sheet metal. In the case of deep scrapes or scores, you are advised to have the necessary touching up carried out immediately to avoid the formation of rust.
IMPORTANT Wash with the engine cold and the ignition key at STOP. After washing make sure that the various protections (e.g. rubber caps and various covers) have not been damaged or removed. Front headlights IMPORTANT Never use aromatic substances (e.g.: petrol) or ketones (e.g.: acetone) for cleaning front headlight plastic lens. ❒ Rub the seats with a sponge moistened with a solution of water and neutral detergent.
DASHBOARD AND CONTROLS SAFETY DEVICES Never use spirit or alcohol-based products. These components shall only be cleaned with water and neutral soap.
