Subject: SC7010BV Smoke/CO Combo Alarm Voice Warning Operation
Date: 4/24/09
What the NFPA Requirements state regarding voice warning and smoke alarms:
NFPA 72 Section 11.3.5.2* Voice Warning Requirements – Smoke Alarms
Fire warning equipment producing the audible emergency evacuation signal shall be permitted to
incorporate voice notification under either or both of the following conditions:
1) Where the voice message is contained completely within the 1.5-second pause period of the
audible emergency evacuation signal.
2) Where the voice message complies with (a) and (b) as follows:
a) The voice message is first preceded by a minimum of eight cycles of the audible emergency
evacuation signal.
b) The voice message periodically interrupts the signal for no longer than 10 seconds followed by
a minimum of two cycles of the audible emergency evacuation signal between each voice
message. The initial eight-cycle period shall not be required to be repeated.
How BRK’s SC7010BV Voice Warning operates during Testing and in Alarm:
During testing, you will see and hear the following sequence:
Initiating Alarm:
The Alarm Voice will say “Testing.” The Horn will sound 3 beeps, pause, 3 beeps. The Alarm Voice
will say “Warning, evacuate smoke in [Location, example: “Basement”]. Evacuate.” The
Power/Smoke LED flashes Red and the CO LED will be Off.
Next the Horn will sound 4 beeps, pause, 4 beeps. The Alarm Voice will say “Warning, evacuate
carbon monoxide in [Location, example: “Basement”]. Evacuate.” The Power/Smoke LED will be
Off and the CO LED flashes Red.
Interconnected Alarms:
For “Smoke”, because our “Voice Warning with Location” message is greater than 1.5 seconds
long, we must wait the 8 cycle requirement of alarm signal before Voice can be used. Since the
test cycle does not last that long nor do we want the test cycle to last for an extended period of
time, voice on an interconnected alarm will only be heard during an actual alarm as per the
required NFPA 72 Voice Warning requirements stated above. Both the Power/Smoke LED and the
CO LED will be Off on interconnected alarms.
