Introduction • Canada: 1-800-36-FLUKE (1-800-363-5853) Fluke 712C RTD Calibrator (the Product) is a handheld, battery-operated instrument that measures and sources a variety of RTDs. It also has an isolated channel to measure 4-20 mA (with loop power option). See Table 1.

RTD Calibrator Auto Power-Off Auto Power-Off Auto Backlight-Off The product provides an auto power-off function to save power. When the auto power-off mode is enabled, the Product automatically powers off after 15 minutes of inactivity. The Product provides an auto backlight-off function to save power. RTD Calibrator Magnet Mounting and Hanging Strap Magnet Mounting and Hanging Strap The Product has a magnet on the rear of the unit. It is removable. This magnet enables users to mount the Product on metal environment and free their hands. In addition, this Product has a hanging strap on the magnet. Besides its hanging purpose, the strap connects the magnet and the Product to avoid losing the magnet. This strap is also removable. Figure 6 shows the magnet mounting of the Product with the hanging strap.
712C Users Manual Measure mA Current and Activate Loop Power Supply 712C RTD CALIBRATOR 1 (Shift) 2 The Product lets you measure mA current. It also has a loop power function that activates a 24 V supply in series with the current measuring circuit. This allows you to test a transmitter when it is disconnected from plant wiring. Red TEST DC PWR – ++ – + Caution To prevent impact to the measurement function, do not use the Product to measure current near strong magnetic fields.
RTD Calibrator Measure Temperature Measure Temperature Use Resistance-Temperature Detectors (RTDs) The Product accepts RTD types shown in Table 6. RTDs are characterized by their resistance at 0 °C (32 °F), which is called the “ice point” or R0. The most common R0 is 100 Ω. The Product accepts RTD measurement inputs in 2-, 3-, or 4-wire connections, with the 3-wire connection the most common.

712C Users Manual Source Temperature Signals The Product allows you to source temperature signals via sensor. See Figure 9. 1. Push to switch to Source mode on temperature channel. 2. Use the arrow keys to define the simulated temperature value. The display shows the temperature channel with a set temperature value. RTD Calibrator Simulate RTDs Simulate RTDs Connect the Product to the instrument under test as shown in Figure 10. Proceed as follows to simulate an RTD: 1. If necessary, push for Source mode. 2. Push for the RTD display. 3. Note Use the 2W, 3W, and 4W terminals for measurement only, not for simulation. The Product simulates a 2-wire RTD at its front panel. To connect to a 3-wire or 4-wire transmitter, use the stacking cables to provide the extra wires. See Figure 10.

RTD Calibrator Scale mA Channel to Temperature Scale mA Channel to Temperature Set 0 % and 100 % Output Parameters The Product provides a function to convert mA current channel reading to temperature reading. You must set the 0 % and 100 % points before you can use the step and ramp functions. Proceed as follows: To scale mA channel to temperature: 1. If necessary, push for Source mode. 1. Push . 2. The Product allows you to set Step and Ramp modes for easier check of points within the linear range in output mode. To set the Step or Ramp mode: 1. Push . 2. Use and to select Step mode and Ramp mode. The or icon shows on the Product display accordingly. Note This function is only available when Source mode is selected.
RTD Calibrator Replace the Batteries Replace the Batteries Warning To prevent false readings, which could lead to possible electric shock or personal injury, replace the batteries as soon as the low battery indicator appears. Figure 11 shows you how to replace the batteries. hnh38.eps Figure 11.
712C Users Manual Service Center Calibration or Repair Maintenance Clean the Product Warning To prevent personal injury or damage to the Product, use only the specified replacement parts and do not allow water into the case. Caution To prevent damage to the plastic lens and case, do not use solvents or abrasive cleansers. Clean the Product with a soft cloth dampened with water or water and mild soap.
