3. With the muzzle pointed in a safe direction and your fingers away from

the trigger, hold the pistol in your firing hand and pull the slide fully

rearward with the other hand and release the slide, which will return

under the force of the recoil spring (Figure 10-11). You can also press

down on the slide stop to allow the slide to move forward and chamber

a cartridge if the slide is locked to the rear. This movement resets the

firing mechanism and moves the first cartridge from the magazine into

the chamber. Allow the slide to “slam” forward under the force of the

recoil spring. Do not ease it forward.

THE PISTOL IS NOW READY TO FIRE. ALWAYS KEEP THE

MUZZLE POINTED IN A SAFE DIRECTION AND KEEP YOUR

FINGERS AWAY FROM THE TRIGGER UNTIL READY TO FIRE.

FAILURE TO FOLLOW THESE WARNINGS COULD RESULT IN

SERIOUS INJURY OR DEATH.
