9.3 AMBIDEXTROUS SLIDE STOP
The FN 509 slide stop is fully
ambidextrous meaning that the
control levers are located on both
sides of the frame within easy reach
of the thumb of the shooting hand
and protected from unintentional
activation by a guard located in front
of and below the slide stop lever. The
slide stop is automatically engaged
when the last shot from a magazine
is fired or the slide is retracted with an empty magazine in the pistol. To
engage the slide stop without an empty magazine inserted, retract the slide
and press up on the slide stop and hold it in that position while allowing
the slide to move forward (Figure 31).
To release the slide from the slide stop, press down on the left or right slide
stop lever and the slide will be released to close. The slide can also be
released by pulling back and releasing the slide as long as an empty
magazine is not present.
9.4 MAGAZINE RELEASE
The FN 509 magazine release is
located on the frame behind the
trigger. The release can be actuated
by pressing the magazine release into
the frame. The magazine release can
be easily actuated by the thumb of
the shooting hand and is protected by
a guard that prevents inadvertent
activation of the release and prevents the magazine release from being
pressed if the pistol is dropped or pressed against a flat surface
(Figure 32).
