9.5 LOADED CHAMBER INDICATOR
The loaded chamber indicator is
located on the right side of the slide
just behind the ejection port. When a
cartridge is present in the chamber,
the extractor is deflected by the case
exposing a red dot on the slide
directly above the slide stop and
providing a tactile indication that the
chamber is loaded when a finger is
placed on the wide groove at the front
of the rear slide serrations on the right side of the pistol (Figure 33).
THE RED DOT THAT INDICATES A LOADED CHAMBER CAN
BECOME OBSCURED. DO NOT DEPEND ON THE RED
INDICATOR TO DETERMINE THE UNLOADED CONDITION OF
THE PISTOL.
9.6 MAGAZINE
The FN 509 has a standard magazine capacity of 17 rounds and is
equipped with witness holes along the back of the magazine to allow for
the estimation of rounds remaining in the magazine.
Larger capacity FN 509 magazines will function in FN 509 pistols capable
of accepting smaller capacity magazines of the same caliber. The FN 509
magazine will function in older FNS designs but the base plate will not
align properly with the frame. FNS magazines can function in the FN 509 if
the base plates are replaced.
FN 509 magazines not specifically covered in this manual should be
covered by an addendum included with this manual or with the magazine.
If the magazine that you have is not covered in this manual or by an
addendum, information can be found on the FN website or by contacting FN
customer service.
