After the last cartridge in the
magazine is fired, the slide stop
will engage the slide and
automatically hold the slide in
the open or rearward position
(Figure 17).
If firing is no longer imminent
and you are finished shooting,
remove the magazine and close
the slide by pushing down on the
ambidextrous slide stop or
pulling the slide rearward to disengage the slide stop and allow the
slide to return to the forward position. Decock the hammer as
described in Section 8.2. to place the pistol in the double-action
condition and then place the “safety” in the on safe position as
described in Section 8.1.
For law enforcement and military personnel, refer to the procedures of
your department on carrying a loaded firearm.
15.2. RELOADING DURING FIRING
NEVER CHAMBER A CARTRIDGE UNLESS SHOOTING IS
IMMINENT. ALWAYS KEEP THE MUZZLE POINTED IN A SAFE
DIRECTION. MAKE SURE YOUR FINGERS ARE SAFELY AWAY
FROM THE CHAMBER WHEN THE SLIDE IS RELEASED TO
AVOID PINCHING THEM WHEN THE SLIDE CLOSES. FAILURE
TO FOLLOW THESE WARNINGS COULD RESULT IN SERIOUS
INJURY OR DEATH.
After firing the last cartridge, the slide will remain in the open position.
If firing is imminent, the empty magazine can quickly be replaced with a
loaded magazine as follows:
