Focal Point Quick Clips Installation Instructions
Using Moulding Mates™
GENERAL
Quick Clips are compatible only with select Focal Point crown mouldings.
Finish the crown, corners and connectors with a latex or oil-based paint. DO NOT use lacquer.
TOOLS NEEDED
Cordless drill with magnetic bit holder; Phillips head #2 bit; hand or miter saw; paint and brush; pencil; tape measure; step
ladder; caulk and caulking gun; box of 1-5/8” #6 drywall screws; rubber mallet (optional); polyurethane-based adhesive
(necessary only if you’re not using connector blocks).
1. Paint the moulding and the decorative accessories PRIOR to installation. Quick Clipsallow you to install the crown
moulding without nails so you won’t need to fill, sand and repaint nail holes after the installation.
2. Install the small Moulding Mates ™ corner component (with the stem) in each corner using 1-5/8” drywall screws (not
included). Hold it tight to the ceiling and firmly against the wall, and screw it into the wall through the center of the
slots. DO NOT INSTALL THE LARGE DECORATIVE CORNERS YET.
3. If you’re NOT using the connector blocks proceed to step 4. If you are using the connector blocks, measure from each
corner to locate the mid-point of the wall (or on a longer wall to locate all of the points in which the moulding will
join). Mark each location with a pencil, and install a Quick Clip. The connector block will snap onto the Quick Clip
once all of the moulding has been installed.
4. Install the first clip approximately 8” from the corner component installed in step 2. Hold the clip tight to the ceiling
and screw it to the wall through the pilot hole with a #6 1-5/8” drywall screw (not included). The pilot hole is
positioned so that the screw will go into the top plate of the wall (no anchors required). Screw the clip to the wall so
that the top of the clip remains flush to the ceiling. DO NOT OVER TIGHTEN OR THE CLIP WILL BOW AWAY FROM THE
CEILING AND MAKE FINAL INSTALLATION MORE DIFFICULT.
5. Repeat this process approximately every 10” to 12” until all of the clips are installed. You do not need to measure
precisely for each clip. It is sufficient to “eyeball” 10” to 12” which makes the installation process go quickly.
6. Cut the crown moulding to exact lengths if you’re not using connector blocks. Cut it 1/4” short if using connector
blocks. This will provide a small clearance for both the corners and the connectors to snap into place.
7. Start the moulding installation approximately 1/8” from the small corner component piece installed in step 2. Attach
the crown moulding to the clips by placing the bottom bedding edge of the crown flat to the wall slightly below the
clips. Slide the crown upward until the bottom groove on the moulding back engages the bottom of the clip. Tap the
moulding in the center to fully engage both the top and bottom of the clip. You can use your hand or a rubber mallet
to tap the crown into place. If you use a rubber mallet be sure to tap lightly so that you don’t break the moulding.
8. If your wall is longer than 8’ in length you may butt two pieces of crown together along the wall (or use the optional
connector blocks described in step 3).
If not using the connectors, secure the first piece of moulding completely onto the clips. Apply a thin bead
of polyurethane adhesive to the end of the crown. Then apply another bead of adhesive to the end of the next piece
of moulding. Tap the second piece into place on the next available clip. Slide the two pieces together tightly. Continue
to secure the new piece of moulding onto the clips. NOTE: Unlike wood crown mouldings, DO NOT SCARF CUT
(OVERLAP) FOCAL POINT POLYURETHANE MOULDING. USE A POLYURETHANE-BASED CONSTRUCTION ADHESIVE on
the butt ends to prevent joint separation.
9. Proceed around the room securing the crown to the clips as described above.
10. Moulding Mates™ are designed to snap OVER the crown. Tap the decorative corners onto the previously installed
corner posts. If using the connector blocks, tap them onto the clips described in step 3. If the Moulding Mate™
accessory does not fit tightly over the moulding, sand or file the back of the accessory at the interference point until it
fits evenly at all points of contact.
11. Caulk along the ceiling and in the joints as needed to fill gaps.
