Collet Replacement & Collet
Gripping Pressure Adjustment
For Foredom
®
Nos. 52, 53, 52D,
and 52SJ Handpieces
Pliers and 3/8and 3/4 spanner
wrenches required.
Adjust the Shaft and Sheath
It is important to check the sheath and shaft tip and
p
roperly adjust them before attaching this handpiece
to your Foredom flex shaft tool. The tip of the flexible
s
haft should extend 3/4
b
eyond the end of the
s
heath. This adjustment is made by loosening the set screw in the motor connector and moving the
sheath in or out while the motor and shaft/sheath are hanging fully extended or laying on a flat surface.
When the shaft is adjusted correctly, tighten the set screw in the motor connector.
Always make sure
your power tool is unplugged during any maintenance procedure.
Attach Handpiece
Nos. 52 or 52D to Flexible Shaft
The handpiece is easy to remove from
the flexible shaft. To
remove, simply
pull the handpiece off the shaft and
sheath with a firm grip. To
re-attach, look into the back end of the handpiece for the keyway. Be
sure that the key tip of the flexible shaft is properly lined up with the keyway slot in the back end
of the handpiece and push it on. If it is not in line, turn the shaft tip or the handpiece to the
correct position. The No. 52SJ has a ‘slip joint’ connection for use with European style machines.
Rapid Accessory Changing
These quick change handpieces have a unique
push/pull collet chuck release mechanism. Wait for
the motor, flexible shaft and accessory to come to
a full stop before opening the chuck. Then, pull the outer grip
for
ward with one hand while holding the back of the handpiece
with the other (see Figure 1). Remove the accessory and insert
the shank of the new one at least 1
(25mm) into the chuck. Pull
the grip all the way back until the chuck snaps closed (see Figure 2).

IMPORTANT!
Maintenance and Lubrication
Handpiece Nos. 52, and 52SJ do not require any lubrication. Putting oil or grease into the
front or back of these handpieces will damage their prelubricated ball bearings.
Lubrication of Duplex Connection on the No. 52D Handpiece
Apply 2 Drops of oil in oil hole on rear of duplex connection after approximately every 20
hours of use.
Collet Replacement & Collet Gripping Pressure Adjustment
The collet gripping pressure is preset at the factory during assembly. After a period of use it may be
necessary to readjust the collet chuck nut to compensate for normal collet wear which reduces the
gripping pressure or when the collet is replaced. Follow the instructions below when replacing or
adjusting collet gripping pressure.
1. Remove handpiece from the flexible shaft before
disassembly and remove bur or accessor
y from the collet.
2. Unthread the nose cone using a 3/4(15mm)
spanner wrench while holding the handpiece at the front
knurled section. Turn counter-clockwise to unthread.
3. Pull chuck nut forward while holding front sleeve and
rear knurl and then push back to expose the chuck nut
and front bearing.
4. Remove the chuck nut by holding the bearing
retaining nut with a 3/8
(10mm) spanner wrench and
unthreading counterclockwise the chuck nut with a
spanner wrench (7mm) or pair of pliers on its flats.
This exposes the collet for cleaning or replacement.
5. Gripping pressure is adjusted by moving the adjusting nut down (to increase pressure) or up
(to reduce pressure) on the threaded spindle/collet holder. Make the adjustment in small increments
(about one half turn of the nut). A half turn may be sufficient to increase or decrease gripping pressure.

6. Tighten the chuck nut down so that it touches the adjusting nut
while holding the bearing retaining nut with the 3/8
wrench.
7. Pull sleeve forward over bearing and thread the nose cone back
on and insert a 3/32
or 2.35mm shank accessor
y (1/8
in No. 53
handpiece) into the collet with sleeve pulled forward (open). Now
close the collet. It should require moderate force, and there should
be a slight “snap” as the collet locks closed.
8. If the gripping pressure is too much or too little, remove nose
cone and repeat Steps 3-7. (The chuck nut does not need to be
removed to reduce or increase gripping pressure. Unthread the nut
one or two turns, move adjusting nut up or down a half turn
and re-tighten the chuck nut.)
