1 Getting Ready 1 LOADING THE BATTERIES AND THE MEDIA Check that the camera is switched off (viewfinder lamp switches off) before opening the battery cover. ! If you open the battery cover while the camera is switched on, ● ◆ Checking the remaining battery charge ◆ Switch the camera on and check that no battery level warning (C or V) is displayed on the LCD monitor. If no icon is displayed, there is ample charge left in the batteries. the camera is switched off.

STILL IMAGE MODE SHOOTING STILL IMAGES (a AUTO MODE) If you want to zoom in on your subject, press zoom switch “a” ([ telephoto). To zoom out, press “b” ( ] WIDE). A “zoom bar” appears on the LCD monitor when you zoom in or out. 4 1M A 33 Zoom bar 5 A 1M is a slight delay between the shutter button being pressed and the shot being taken. If necessary, play back the shot to check the image. ! If you press the shutter button down fully in one motion, the ● shot is taken without the AF frame changing.

If the shot is taken at this point, the subjects will not be in focus. ! See P.26 for information on changing the quality mode. ● ! The default quality mode “y” set at shipment is 1.
STILL IMAGE MODE SHOOTING STILL IMAGES (a AUTO MODE) USING THE ZOOM (OPTICAL ZOOM, DIGITAL ZOOM) PLAYBACK MODE VIEWING YOUR IMAGES (PLAYBACK) 1 0 2 0 You can zoom in and out by pressing “a ([)” and “b (])” respectively. The digital zoom can be used with the “3”, “1” and “`” quality mode setting. When zooming switches between optical and digital, the “ ■ ” indicator stops. Pressing the same zoom button again starts the “ ■ ” indicator moving again. 1 Set the Mode dial to “w”.
PLAYBACK MODE VIEWING YOUR IMAGES (PLAYBACK) PLAYBACK MODE During single-frame playback, you can use the zoom to check your photo or trim the image so that only the part you want to show is saved. STILL IMAGE MODE TAKING PICTURES — SELECTING THE CAMERA SETTINGS Consider the scene you are photographing and the sort of image you want to achieve when you specify the camera settings. A general guide to the procedure is given below. 1 STILL IMAGE MENU SELECTING a AUTO OR s MANUAL Set the Mode dial to “q”. 1 Select the photography mode a Leaves the “EV” and “White balance” settings to the camera. s Allows you to set the “EV” and “White balance” yourself.

The “e” appears on the LCD monitor indicating that you can take close-up shots. To cancel Macro mode, press the “e ” Macro button again. h Focus distance Approx.
STILL IMAGE MODE e MACRO (CLOSE-UP) PHOTOGRAPHY, d FLASH b Red-Eye Reduction Use this mode to ensure that the subject’s eyes appear natural when photographing people in low-light conditions. The flash fires a pre-flash just before the picture is taken and then fires again to take the actual picture. The flash fires automatically as required by the shooting conditions. PHOTOGRAPHY MENU PHOTOGRAPHY MENU The self-timer lamp lights steadily for roughly 5 seconds and then blinks for another 5 seconds, after which the shot is taken. 3 f Top 4-frame Continuous Shooting In this mode, you can shoot up to 4 frames at intervals as short as 0.3 seconds. When you take the shots, the photographed images are displayed and automatically recorded.
PHOTOGRAPHY MENU PHOTOGRAPHY MENU MOVIE MODE D EV (EXPOSURE COMPENSATION) This mode can be selected in the “s” photography mode. Use the Brightness setting to obtain the correct brightness (exposure) when the subject is much brighter or darker than the background. r SHOOTING MOVIES Set the Mode dial to “r”. This mode allows you to shoot movies up to 120 seconds long (at the $ setting) or 480 seconds long (at the # setting).
MOVIE MODE r SHOOTING MOVIES PLAYBACK MODE Press the shutter button down fully to start shooting. 4 1 01 r PLAYING BACK MOVIES 1 Set the Mode dial to “w”. 2 Press “d” or “c” to select the movie file. 2 0 ! The focus is fixed at approximately 1 m (3.3 ft.) to infinity. ● ! The brightness and color of the LCD monitor shown during ● movie shooting may differ from those shown before shooting begins. ! You do not need to hold down the shutter button.
PLAYBACK MENU o ERASING SINGLE, ALL FRAMES 1 Set the Mode dial to “w”. 2 Press the “MENU/OK” button to display the menu screen. 1 01 FRAME 1 Press “d” or “c” to select the file to be erased. 2 Press the “MENU/OK” button to erase the currently displayed file. To erase another image, repeat steps 1 and 2. When you have finished erasing images, press the “BACK” button. 2 0 Note that mistakenly erased frames (files) cannot be recovered.
PLAYBACK MENU 1 01 i PROTECTING IMAGES FRAME, SET ALL, RESET ALL 2 0 1 Set the Mode dial to “w”. 2 Press the “MENU/OK” button to display the menu screen. FRAME RESET 1 Press “d” or “c” to select the protected file. 2 Press the “MENU/OK” button to unprotect the displayed file. Protection is a setting that prevents frames (files) from being accidentally erased. However, the “FORMAT” function erases all the frames (files), including protected frames (files) (➡P.52).

SET–UP ■ SET–UP Menu Options Settings Display POWER SAVE SETTING Default setting Explanation IMAGE DISP. ON/OFF ON This option specifies whether or not an image checking screen (photography results) is displayed after you take a shot. The photographed image is displayed for a few moments and then automatically recorded. POWER SAVE ON/OFF ON This option allows you to specify whether the LCD monitor switches off to conserve power if the camera is not used for 30 seconds. See P.51 for details.
5 Software Installation SET–UP FORMAT Formatting erases all the frames (files). Initialize the xD-Picture Card for use in the camera. You should copy important files that you do not want to be erased to your computer or another xDPicture Card. 1 Press “d” or “c” to select “YES”. 2 Press the “MENU/OK” button to erase all the files and format the xD-Picture Card. Click [Agree] button in the “License” window. To run this software, you must have the hardware and software described below. Check your system before you begin the installation.
INSTALLATION ON A Mac OS X Only FinePixViewer is installed on Mac OS X. ! AVI movies cannot be played back on version 10.0.4. ● 1 2 Switch your Macintosh on and start up Mac OS X. Do not launch any other applications. 8 9 Click the [Continue] button in the “Software License Agreement” window. 10 11 Click the [Install (upgrade)] button. Select the Mac OS X startup disk as the installation destination and click the [Continue] button. Load the enclosed CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive.

CAMERA CONNECTION If you are using a Windows PC, the driver settings are specified automatically when installation is completed. No further action is required. Always use the prescribed procedure when disconnecting or switching off the camera (➡P.66). Windows XP 1 ! On Windows XP and Mac OS X, you must specify the automatic launch settings the first time you connect the ● The “Found New Hardware” help message appears in the bottom-right corner of your screen.
USING FinePixViewer CAMERA CONNECTION Disconnecting the Camera Mastering FinePixViewer 1 1 Quit all applications (FinePixViewer etc.) that are using the camera. 2 Check that the viewfinder lamp is lit green or that the self-timer lamp is off (no data is being exchanged with the computer). For a DSC connection, proceed to step 2. For a PC CAMERA connection, proceed to step 3. ! Even when “Copying” is no longer displayed on the computer, ● the camera and the computer may still be exchanging data.

Notes on the xD-Picture Card™ ■ Image Memory Card h This Image Memory Card is a new image recording media (xD-Picture Card) developed for digital cameras. The Image Memory Card consists of a semiconductor memory (NAND-type flash memory) to record digital image data. The recording process is electrically performed and enables erasure of existing image data as well as rerecording of new image data.
