1 Getting Ready CHARGING A BATTERY Charge the Rechargeable Battery NH-20. Take care not to obstruct the lens, as it is a precision component. Obstructing the lens will cause a malfunction or fault and the “ ∂ ” or “ ß ” message will appear.

2 Using the Camera BASIC OPERATION GUIDE You’ve read the chapter on getting ready and the camera is now set up and ready to take pictures. “Using the Camera” describes the basic camera operations of “Taking Pictures”, then “Viewing Images” and “Erasing Images”. This section describes the camera’s functions. 0 Changing modes Slide the Mode switch to change modes. Still photography mode: Still image shooting. Playback mode: Photographed image playback. Movie mode: Movie recording.
STILL PHOTOGRAPHY MODE 1 01 TAKING PICTURES (a AUTO MODE) 1 Slide the Power switch sideways to turn the camera on. 2 Set the Mode switch to “q”. ON Press the Zoom switch “a” ([ telephoto) up to zoom in on the subject. To zoom out, press “b” (] wide-angle) down. A “zoom bar” appears on the LCD monitor when you zoom in or out. 4 h Focal range: Approx. 60 cm (2.0 ft.) to infinity 33 A 2 0 ! For subjects closer than 60 cm (2.0 ft.), use Macro mode ● Zoom bar (➡P.33).
STILL PHOTOGRAPHY MODE 7 TAKING PICTURES (a AUTO MODE) Pressing the Shutter button down halfway, the camera emits a short double-beep and focuses on your subject. At that point, the AF frame on the LCD monitor becomes smaller and the camera sets the shutter speed and aperture (the viewfinder lamp (green) stops blinking and remains lit). Bebeep ! If “{” appears on the LCD monitor, the camera cannot focus.
STILL PHOTOGRAPHY MODE TAKING PICTURES (a AUTO MODE) USING THE ZOOM (OPTICAL ZOOM / DIGITAL ZOOM) USING AF/AE LOCK 1 2 33 A 33 A In a shot with this type of composition, the subjects (two people in this case) are not in the AF frame. If the picture is taken at this point, the subjects will not be in focus. Press “a ([)” up and “b (])” down to zoom in and out. The digital zoom can be used with the “3”, “1” and “`” quality settings.
PLAYBACK MODE VIEWING THE IMAGES (PLAYBACK) 1 0 Single-frame playback 2 0 1 Set the Mode switch to “w”. 2 Press “c” to scan forward through the images and press “d” to scan backwards. During single-frame playback, you can use the zoom to check your photo or trim the image so that only the part you want to show is saved. STILL PHOTOGRAPHY MENU PHOTOGRAPHY MENU Selecting the SHOOTING MODE (➡P.36) The self-timer lamp lights steadily for about 5 seconds and then blinks for another 5 seconds, after which the shot is taken. 3 f Top 4-frame continuous shooting This mode shoots up to 4 frames at intervals as short as 0.3 seconds. When taking the pictures, the photographed images are displayed and automatically recorded. STORING ! The self-timer lamplight may not be visible under sunlight.

Use the Brightness setting to obtain the correct brightness (exposure) when the subject is much brighter or darker than the background. ! The available recording time for a video may decrease depending on the amount of free space on the xD-Picture ● Card.
MOVIE MODE r RECORDING MOVIES PLAYBACK MODE Press the Shutter button down fully to start recording. 4 r PLAYING BACK MOVIES 1 01 1 Set the Mode switch to “w”. 2 Press “d” or “c” to select the movie file. 2 0 ! The brightness and color of the LCD monitor shown during ● 100−0006 movie recording may differ from those shown before recording begins. ! You do not need to hold down the Shutter button. ● ! Take care not to erase an image by mistake.

However, the “FORMAT” function erases all the frames (files), including protected frames (files) (➡P.59). 1 Press “d” or “c” to select the protected frame (file). 2 Press the “MENU/OK” button to unprotect the displayed frame (file).

p PHOTO MODE PLAYBACK u HOW TO SPECIFY PRINT OPTIONS (DPOF) DPOF stands for Digital Print Order Format and refers to a format that is used for recording printing specifications for images shot using a digital camera on media such as an xD-Picture Card. The recorded specifications include information on which frames are to be printed. p PHOTO MODE PLAYBACK 1 01 u DPOF SET FRAME 1 Set the Mode switch to “w”. 2 Press the Photo mode (p) button.

For frames (files) that you do not want printed, set the number of prints to 0 (zero). To specify more DPOF settings, repeat steps 1 and 2.

SET-UP FORMAT POWER SAVE SETTING SETーUP 1/4 IMAGE DISP. POWER SAVE FORMAT BEEP BACK CANCEL ON ON OK OK SET When this function is active, the LCD monitor goes dark when the camera is not used for about 10 seconds. When the camera is not used for another 20 seconds, this function automatically turns the LCD monitor off (sleep) to reduce power consumption (the viewfinder lamp (green) blinks at 1-second intervals).
5 Software Installation 5.1 THE SOFTWARE COMPONENTS Connect the camera with “qPC ” selected as the USB setting. Connect the camera with “¶” selected as the USB setting (➡P.71). USB Mass Storage Driver Allows a digital camera to be used as USB Mass Storage (removable disk drive, card reader). Exif Launcher Launches the FinePixViewer software when a camera is connected. USB PC Camera Driver Allows a digital camera to be used as a PC Camera (Windows/Mac OS 9 only). FinePixViewer 5.
5.2 INSTALLATION ON A Windows PC Do not connect the camera to your PC until the software installation is completed. 1 Install FinePixViewer as instructed in the Quick Start Guide. ◆ Launching the installer manually ◆ 5.3 INSTALLATION ON A Mac OS 9.0 TO 9.2 Pre-installation checklist To run this software, you must have the hardware and software described below. Check your system before you begin the installation.
5.3 INSTALLATION ON A Mac OS 9.0 TO 9.2 5 The Installer setup screen appears. Click the [Installing FinePixViewer] button. ! For more information on what is installed, click the [Read Me ● 10 After restarting the Macintosh, the “FinePixViewer installation completed” message appears. Click “Using FinePixViewer” to view the basic FinePixViewer functions. 11 To install Acrobat Reader, click “Install Acrobat Reader”. 12 Proceed with the installation as directed by the on-screen instructions.
5.4 INSTALLATION ON A Mac OS X FinePixViewer and RAW FILE CONVERTER LE are installed on Mac OS X. Pre-installation checklist ■ Hardware and software requirements To run this software, you must have the hardware and software described below. Check your system before you begin the installation. 5.4 INSTALLATION ON A Mac OS X 9 10 11 12 13 Click the [Continue] button. ! The software is installed in the “Applications” folder on the installation destination disk. ● 6 Viewing Images 6.1 CAMERA CONNECTION 6.1.1 Using the AC power adapter (sold separately) Click the [Install (upgrade)] button. Always use a FUJIFILM AC Power Adapter AC-3V/AC-3VW. Use the AC power adapter to avoid losing power at inconvenient times, such as when downloading photographed images to the computer.
6.1 CAMERA CONNECTION 6.1.3 Connecting to a Computer Use at DSC mode The “Camera Connection” section explains how to connect the camera to your computer using the USB cable (included) and describes the functions you can use once the camera and computer are connected. 1 Set a camera 1 0 1 Insert an xD-Picture Card containing photographed images into your camera. Plug the AC power adapter connector into the DC IN 3V socket on the camera and then plug the adapter itself into the main power outlet.

Explanation of Terms Safety Notes AF/AE Lock: On the FinePix F420, pressing the Shutter button down half way locks the focus and exposure settings (AF and AE lock). If you want to focus on a subject that is not centered in the frame or change the picture composition after the exposure is set, you can obtain good results by changing the composition after the AF and AE settings are locked.
Safety Notes WARNING Do not heat, modify or attempt to disassemble the batteries. Do not drop or subject the batteries to impact. Do not attempt to recharge lithium or alkaline batteries. Do not store the batteries with metallic products. Do not use chargers other than the specified model to charge the batteries. Any of these actions can cause the batteries to burst or leak and cause fire or injury as a result. Use only the batteries or AC power adapters specified for use with this camera.
