Charging the Battery 2 Plug the battery charger into a power outlet. The charging indicator lights green and charging begins. When charging is completed, the indicator turns off. Loading the Battery Battery is required to operate the digital camera. At first, load the battery in the camera. Open the battery cover. 2 Load the battery. Make sure that the indicators are aligned. Push the battery release catch aside while loading the battery. Check that the battery is firmly held in place. Loading the Memory Card CAUTION Be sure to unlock the protection of the SD Memory Card before inserting it. If it is locked, recording/deleting images, as well as formatting are not available. To unlock the protection, slide the switch back, and the SD Memory Card will work normally. 3 Close the battery cover. When the Auto power off function is active, if the camera is left unused for 2 or 5 minutes, this function turns the camera off (➝p.113). To turn the camera back on, press POWER. Taking Pictures (B AUTO Mode) Using Intelligent Face Detection when taking pictures Intelligent Face Detection allows you to focus on and adjust the brightness of people’s faces. Intelligent Face Detection is effective with the camera held horizontally or vertically. CAUTION Taking pictures with the focus and exposure locked AUTO 1 / 24 / 2007 N 25 10:00 AM Using the Camera • If the camera or subject move as the picture is taken, the subject’s face may move out of the Intelligent Face Detection frame. • When the camera is detecting multiple faces, the green frame is set around the face near the center. If you want to focus on another subject, move the camera so that the new subject is in the center of the screen.

Subjects not suitable for autofocus Use this illuminator to focus on the subject in dimly lit conditions. When pressing the shutter button down halfway, the camera fires the AF-assist illuminator (white) while focusing on your subject. Using the Camera FinePix F40fd / FinePix F45fd uses a high-precision autofocusing mechanism.

Best framing Position the main subject at the intersection of two lines in this frame or align one of the horizontal lines with the horizon. Using the Photography Functions — Procedure of Setting Specify the camera settings for taking pictures to get the best result. A general guide is given below. B Auto This is the easiest mode for taking pictures (➝p.49). 1 Picture Stabilization Used for selecting a fast shutter speed that reduces camera shake and movingsubject blurring (➝p.49). Select the Photography mode. Turn the Mode dial to select the Photography mode. The camera settings are tailored to the scene being shot.

Setting the Shooting Mode Picture Stabilization You can select the most suitable setting according to the subject by selecting one of the Shooting modes. Use this mode to select a fast shutter speed that reduces camera shake and moving-subject blurring. B AUTO Set the Mode dial to . Camera specifies all settings other than p-MODE (Quality and FinePix COLOR) automatically. Setting the Shooting Mode NATURAL & d NATURAL LIGHT This mode produces beautiful images that retain the natural ambience when shots are taken in low-light conditions. This mode is also ideal for shooting indoor or situations where the flash cannot be used. Camera sets the high-sensitivity setting when selecting the Natural light mode. This mode is effective for reducing camera shake and moving-subject blurring when taking pictures in low-light conditions.
/ Z Selecting Scene position setting SCENE POSITION This mode provides the best Scene position setting for the scene being shot. Choose from 15 types of scene. Select the Scene position setting in the SCENE POSITION menu. / . Portrait with soft overall tone and beautiful skin tones CANCEL SET A Press MENU/OK to open the menu. Setting the Shooting Mode H PORTRAIT . SPORT Use this mode for photography to get beautiful skin tones and soft overall tone. Use this mode to take pictures of a moving subject. It gives priority to faster shutter speeds. , LANDSCAPE Use this mode for shooting scenery in daylight and provides crisp, clear shots of scenery such as buildings and mountains. FIREWORKS SUNSET Use this mode to shoot fireworks. It is effective for taking more vivid shots of fireworks with a slow shutter. Use this mode to shoot sunset, making the colors more vivid. Setting the Shooting Mode BEACH Use this mode to prevent darkening images and provide crisp, clear shots, when shooting at beach under strong sunlight. UNDERWATER Use this mode for shooting with a waterproof case. It is effective for taking more vivid shots of ocean blue. MUSEUM Use this mode for taking pictures in places such as museum where the use of flash and making an operation sound and a shutter sound are restricted.
FLOWER TEXT Use this mode to shoot documents and white board. It is effective for taking clearer shots of letters. Power Supply and Battery Notes on the Battery (NP-70) This camera uses the Rechargeable Lithium-ion Battery NP-70. Note the points below when using the rechargeable battery. Take particular care to read the Safety Notes to make sure that you use the battery correctly. * When shipped, the NP-70 is not fully charged. Always charge the NP-70 before using it. • When carrying the NP-70, install it in a digital camera or keep it in the soft case.
Notes on storage The Rechargeable Lithium-ion Battery NP-70 is both compact and capable of storing large quantities of power. Explanation of Terms EV A number denotes Exposure Value. The EV is determined by the brightness of the subject and sensitivity (speed) of the film or CCD. The number is larger for bright subjects and smaller for dark subjects.
