Introduction Innovative technology and ergonomic design make this notebook the ideal user-friendly and reliable travel companion. Your operating system is pre-installed on the hard disk for your convenience when you use your LIFEBOOK for the first time. The configurable energy-saving functions allow you to make the most effective use of the battery capacity, you can also purchase an optional 6-cell battery for longer usage times. For mouse control your LIFEBOOK has a Touchpanel and QuickPoint.

Transporting the notebook • • • • • • Do not pick up the notebook by the LCD display panel. Switch off the notebook. Remove all data carriers (e.g. floppy disk, CD) from the drives. Make sure that the LCD display panel is properly closed. Disconnect the power adapter and all peripherals.
Preparing for use ! Please read the chapter "Important notes". You must charge the battery and install the application programmes before you can work with the notebook. The operating system and drivers required are preinstalled. When not plugged into a mains outlet, the notebook runs on its built-in battery. You can increase the battery's life by enabling the system's energy saving functions. If you use the notebook in a normal office situation, run it from the mains using the power adapter.
Preparing for use Preparing for operation Preparing for operation ! The notebook and the power adapter should be at least 200 mm apart. Keep other objects 100 mm clear of the notebook and it's power adapter. Do not cover the ventilation slots in the notebook. Do not place the power adapter on heat-sensitive material. The power adapter's AC cord should only be connected to a mains outlet if the notebook is connected to the power adapter. Do not use the power adapter for other notebooks or devices.

When you switch on the notebook, it takes a few seconds before the battery status is displayed: The battery charging state is indicated in the status indicator panel. Indicates that the battery is 0%-25% charged. Indicates that the battery is 25%-50% charged. Indicates that the battery is 50%-75% charged.

Remove the battery by sliding it away from the notebook. Slide the battery release and battery lock back into position on the right. i If you are using Windows NT, please execute the PHDISK programme. Detailed information can be found in chapter "PHDISK (for Windows 98 and Windows NT)".
Working with your notebook Switching on Ê Ê Slide the release button to the right and open the LCD display panel. Push the ON/OFF switch located on the right side panel. ! When you switch on your notebook for the first time the supplied software is set up and configured. Please follow the instructions on the screen. If you want to partition your hard disk, please refer to chapter "PHDISK (for Windows 98 and Windows NT)". You must not switch off or re-start your notebook during this initial installation.
Working with your notebook Interior view Switching off the notebook without exiting applications With the Suspend/Resume button you can also switch off the notebook without exiting the running application. i − Pressing the Suspend/Resume button switches off the notebook while everything remains as you have left it. − If you press the Suspend/Resume button again, the screen that was last displayed appears and you can continue your work.
Security Panel Working with your notebook Security Panel The security panel enables you to protect your notebook from unauthorised use with a hardware password. When a Security Panel password is activated, the notebook will not start without the correct insertion of a password. The password must be entered in order to enter the BIOS Setup utility. Once a password has been assigned the notebook will not switch on, or Resume from Save-to-disk without correct insertion of a password.

Double-click on FJSECU.EXE to begin installation of the user password application. Follow the instructions in the dialogue box.

Indicators and input devices Working with your notebook Status indicators Symbols in this panel indicate the operating state of the notebook. The meaning of the symbols are as follows: Power-on indicator Your notebook is ready for operation when this symbol appears. The power-on indicator lights up when the notebook is supplied with power, and flashes when it is in the Standby mode. The indicator goes out when the notebook switches into the Save to Disk mode or when it is switched off.
Working with your notebook Keyboard Keyboard The following description of keys and key combinations refers to Windows. Additional functions supported by the keys are described in the relevant manuals supplied with your application programmes. The figure below shows how to access the different characters on keys with overlaid functions. The example applies when the CapsLK indicator is not lit.
Keyboard Working with your notebook Fn key The [Fn] key enables the special functions indicated in blue on overlay keys (see "Key combinations"). If the external keyboard does not feature an [Fn] key, you can simultaneously press the [Ctrl] + [Alt Gr] keys or the [Ctrl] and the [Alt] keys. Fn Cursor keys The cursor keys move the cursor in the direction of the arrow, i.e., up, down, left, or right. Pause key The [Pause] key temporarily suspends display output.
Keyboard Working with your notebook Key combinations The following description of key combinations refers to functions when using Microsoft Windows. Some of the following key combinations may not function in other operating systems and with some device drivers. Other key combinations are described in the relevant manuals supplied with your application programmes. You enter key combinations as follows: Ê Ê Press and hold the first key in the combination.
Touchpanel Working with your notebook Touchpanel Using the Touchpanel Use the stylus pen on the Touchpanel to move the cursor, mark elements and execute commands. Ê To remove the stylus pen from its holder, push the lock upwards lightly. i By default, the QuickPoint has been configured with the larger button as the primary one (referred to as the left mouse button), and the smaller button as the secondary (right) mouse button. Ê Ê To move the cursor, drag the stylus pen across the display.
QuickPoint Working with your notebook QuickPoint The QuickPoint is like a mouse: you can move the cursor by pushing the QuickPoint gently with your finger. The two buttons located on the palm rest can be used for selecting and executing commands. i By default, the QuickPoint has been configured with the larger button as the primary one, and the smaller button as the secondary one. If you need to modify the QuickPoint settings, please refer to the topic "Configuring the QuickPoint".
QuickPoint Working with your notebook To right-click: Ê Ê Ê Move the screen cursor to the item you wish to select. Press the smaller button once so that it makes a clicking sound. Immediately release the button. To double-click: Ê Ê Move the screen cursor to the item you wish to select. Press the larger button twice in quick succession. To drag: Ê Ê Select an item with the screen cursor. Ê Release the button.
Working with your notebook LCD display Configuring the QuickPoint This utility allows you to modify the outlook of the pointer, it’s motion, speed and tracks, or to select another pointing device. Ê Open Mouse properties in Control Panel (If the illustration does not resemble your mouse, please ensure that you have the correct driver installed). Ê Ê Change the settings according to your needs. Click on OK.
Hard disk Working with your notebook Hard disk The hard disk is the most important storage medium of your notebook. You can work considerably faster and more efficiently if you copy applications and files from floppy disks and/or CDs to your hard disk. When the hard disk is accessed, the hard disk indicator lights up in the status indicator panel. PC cards Two PC card slots (CardBus or PCMCIA) on the left-hand side of your notebook permit operation with two Type I / II PC cards or one Type III PC card.
PC cards Working with your notebook Removing a PC card 2 1 Use the small PC card icon located in your task bar to stop the card: Ê Ê Ê Ê Place the cursor over the PC card icon. Right click on the icon in your PC card task bar. Select PC card Properties. Select the card you wish to stop and click on Stop. Wait for the dialogue box which tells you that it is now safe to remove the PC card. Ê Ê Push the eject button (1). Slide the PC card (2) out of the notebook.
Memory extension Working with your notebook Memory extension ! The notebook must be switched off when installing/removing the memory modules. The notebook may not be in the Suspend mode. So that the current data can be saved in the Save to Disk suspend mode, sufficient memory space must be available on the hard disk (at least the size of the main memory + 2 Mbytes).

Ê Carefully push the memory module downwards until you feel it latch into place. Ê Install additional memory modules in the same way. Ê Ê Ê Ê Replace the cover. Ê Ê Reconnect the cables. Mounting cover Fasten the cover with the screw. Refit the battery. Turn the notebook over and place it on a flat surface. Open the LCD display panel.
Connecting external devices ! Disconnect all the devices from their respective power sources when you connect or disconnect a device. Read the documentation on the external device before connecting it. Do not connect or disconnect cables during a thunderstorm. Always take hold of the actual plug. Never unplug a cable by pulling the cable itself. Connect and disconnect the cables in the order described below. Connecting cables • • • • • Turn off all power and equipment switches.

Connecting an external monitor An external monitor can be connected to the notebook or the Port Replicator. Ê Ê Ê 36 − Using the [Fn] + [F10] key combination you can switch back and forth between the external monitor and the LCD display panel.
Connecting an external keyboard Connecting external devices Setting the refresh rate for your external monitor The refresh rate must be correctly set so that the image does not flicker. Ê To change the refresh rate or resolution select the monitor type in the menu Start - Settings Control Panel - Display - Settings - Advanced - Monitor . Ê Ê Now select the Adapter tab. Adjust the refresh rate and then click Apply. ! If the refresh rate set is too high, the monitor may be damaged.

Connecting a PS/2 mouse You do not need to switch off your notebook. Ê Simply connect the mouse to the PS/2 mouse connection (or keyboard connection) on the right-hand side of your notebook.

Connect the mouse to the serial port on the back of your notebook. Run the mouse service programme under Start - Settings - Control Panel and select the General tab. Restart the notebook. CD/DVD ROM Connecting external devices Using the serial port Ê Ê Ê Ê Switch off the notebook. Connect the printer data cable to the serial port on the back of the notebook. Plug the power cable of the printer into the mains outlet. First switch on the printer, then the notebook. CD/DVD ROM Please refer to the instructions shipped with your CD/DVD ROM for guidance on installation and use. Floppy disks ! Follow the instructions supplied by the vendor of the floppy disks.
Floppy disks Connecting external devices To remove a diskette: Ê Ê Make sure that the diskette drive indicator is off. Press the eject button and slide the diskette out of the drive. Diskettes are also sensitive to electromagnetic emissions. To establish a connection using a LAN, or LAN-Modem combination i Ê You do not need to switch off your notebook. Insert the LAN/Modem cable into the port on the right side panel of your notebook, or the back panel of your port replicator.

Insert the LAN/Modem cable into the port on the right side panel of your Notebook, or the back panel of your port replicator. Connecting to LAN or modem using a PC card A LAN, LAN-Modem or modem PC card is available as an option with your notebook.

Ê Ê Start the server (Host) and configure it. Ê Start the client (Guest) and configure it using the same assistant as for the host, but instead select Guest as the final selection. Select Start - Settings - Control Panel - Network and release the folder or the printer with the Release option.
Connecting USB devices Connecting external devices Connecting USB devices Your notebook is equipped with two USB ports located on the right panel of the unit. USB devices can be connected or disconnected without having to restart the computer. 1 You do not need to switch off your notebook. Ê Connect the plug of the USB device to the USB port on the right panel of the notebook. The USB device will automatically be recognised.
Connecting external devices Connecting external audio devices Connecting external audio devices The audio ports are located on the right-hand side of your notebook. 2 1 1 - Headphone port Via the headphone port you can connect either headphones or external loudspeakers to your notebook. 2 - Microphone port Via the microphone port you can connect an external microphone to your notebook.
Energy saving functions The notebook uses less power when the power management features are enabled. You will then be able to work for longer before having to recharge the battery. i Never switch off the notebook with the ON/OFF switch while the notebook is in one of the energy-saving modes. If you do not require the notebook for a longer time, first switch off the energy-saving mode and then press the ON/OFF switch. Standby mode Ê Press the Suspend/Resume button to switch the Standby mode on and off.
Energy saving functions Connecting external audio devices Operating system with APM Ê Press the Suspend/Resume button or choose Start - Shut down - Standby to switch the Suspend-to-RAM mode on and off. If you have set the value Suspend in the Power Savings Menu of the BIOS Setup, the data in the main memory of the system are saved. If you have set the value Save-to-disk in the Power Savings menu of the BIOS Setup, the data in the "Save-to-disk" area are saved to the hard disk.
Connecting external audio devices Energy saving functions Suspend to Disk The active data can only be saved if sufficient space is available on the hard disk (at least the main memory size + 2 Mbytes). If the operating system Windows NT or OS/2 Warp is used, a FAT partition with this space must be created as a drive on the hard disk (see manual for respective operating system). Closed cover switch When you close the LCD display, the notebook switches into Standby mode.
Energy saving functions Connecting external audio devices Operating systems with ACPI (Windows ME and Windows 2000) For operating systems with ACPI you can set the energy-saving functions under Settings – Control Panel – Power Management (e.g. Standby, Hibernate mode and LCD off). i Settings for energy-saving functions in the BIOS Setup are not taken into account by operating systems with ACPI. Changing settings Ê Ê Ê Double-click on the My Computer symbol. Double-click on the Control Panel symbol.
Connecting external audio devices Energy saving functions Running PHDISK Ê Ê Ê Ê Ê Ê Click on Start and then Shut down in Windows. Activate the Start computer in MS-DOS mode checkbox and click on Yes. Enter CD\UTILITY\PHDISK at the DOS prompt and press the Enter key. Enter PHDISK /DELETE /FILE at the DOS prompt. Reboot the computer in the MS-DOS mode. Enter PHDISK /CREATE /FILE at the DOS prompt and press the Enter key to run the programme.
Settings in BIOS Setup In BIOS Setup you can set the system functions and the hardware configuration of the notebook. The mouse will not function in BIOS Setup; you must use the keyboard. When it is supplied, the notebook is set to factory default settings. You can change these settings in BIOS Setup. Any changes you make take effect as soon as you save and quit the BIOS Setup.
Settings in BIOS Setup Setting up the password i We recommend you to print out the following instructions, as these instructions cannot be displayed while setting up the password. You have three attempts to enter the correct password. Then the system is blocked. You must now switch off the notebook first before you attempt a reboot. If you have forgotten your password, please contact your customer service centre. With the BIOS Setup you can set up a user password and a supervisor password.
Troubleshooting and tips ! Take note of the safety hints in the chapter "Important notes", when you connect or disconnect cables. If a fault occurs, try to correct it as described. If you fail to correct the problem, proceed as follows: Ê Make a note of the steps and the circumstances that led to the fault. Also make a note of any error messages displayed. Ê Ê Switch off the notebook. Contact your sales outlet or our customer service centre.
Troubleshooting and tips Ê Ê Ê Connect the external CD-ROM drive (see drive documentation). Insert the "Recovery CD" into the CD-ROM drive. Start the Setup programme on the CD. You must then reinstall all the drivers. Use the "Drivers & Utilities" CD. The notebook's date or time is incorrect Ê Set the time and/or date in the Main menu. i If the date and time are repeatedly incorrect when you switch on the notebook, the buffer battery that supplies the internal clock is dead.
Troubleshooting and tips The external monitor stays blank If your screen remains blank this may have the following causes: Monitor is switched off Ê Switch the external monitor on. Screen has been blanked Ê Press any key to continue. Brightness control is set too dark Ê Set the brightness control to bright. The notebook has been configured to drive the internal display Ê Press the key combination [Fn] + [F10] (selecting internal/external display).
Troubleshooting and tips The notebook does not start after switch on If the notebook does not start after switch on, this may be due to one of the following: The battery is not installed correctly Ê Ê Ê Switch off the notebook. Check whether the battery is installed correctly in its compartment. Switch the notebook on. The battery is dead Ê Charge the battery. Or Ê Install a charged battery. Or Ê Connect the power adapter to the notebook.
Troubleshooting and tips The mouse does not work If the connected mouse does not work, the following can cause it: Mouse driver not loaded Ê Check whether the correct mouse driver is properly installed and is present before the application programme is started. Detailed information can be found in the User Guides for the mouse or application programme. Mouse not connected Ê Ê Switch off the notebook. Ê Switch the notebook on. Check whether the mouse cable is correctly connected to the notebook.
Troubleshooting and tips Error messages on the screen This section describes the error messages generated by the BIOS Setup. Error messages displayed by the operating system or programmes are described in the relevant manuals. CMOS Battery Bad If the error message occurs repeatedly, then the buffer battery in the notebook is flat. Ê Connect the notebook via its power adapter to a mains outlet. The buffer battery will take approximately two days to complete its recharge.
Troubleshooting and tips Failure Fixed Disk n The settings of the hard disk drive are incorrect. Ê Start the BIOS Setup (IDE Adapter 0 Master submenu) and select the correct settings. Fixed Disk address conflict Diskette Drive address conflict There is an I/O address conflict. Ê Start the BIOS Setup and check the corresponding settings. Incorrect Drive A type - run SETUP Ê Start the BIOS Setup and make sure that the parameter for floppy disk drive A has been set to the format 1.44 MB, 3 ½ inch.
