Your ESPRIMO Your ESPRIMO Overview ... is available with various configuration levels with different hardware and software. You can incorporate accessible drives (for example a DVD drive) as well as other boards. This manual tells you how to start using your device and how to operate it in daily use. This manual applies for all configuration levels. Depending on the chosen configuration level, some of the hardware components described may not be available on your PC.

Important notes Cleaning the device System unit,see Device Retransportation Transportation Device, Turn off all power and equipment switches and disconnect the power plug from the mains outlet. Do not clean any interior parts yourself, leave this job to a service technician. Do not use any cleaning agents that contain abrasives or may corrode plastic (alcohol, thinner or acetone). Never clean the device with water! Water entering into the device could present a serious risk to users (e.g. electric shock).

Getting started Setting up the device Device Ergonomic Workstation When setting up your device, please read the recommendations and safety notes in the "Safety" manual. We recommend that you place your device on a surface which is not slippery. In view of the many different finishes and varnishes used on furniture, it is possible that the rubber feet will mark the surface they stand on. Depending on the location of your device, troublesome vibrations and noises may occur.
Getting started Switching on for the first time: installing the software Software, Installing, Once the installation has been started the device must not be switched off, unless the installation has been completed. During installation, the device may only be rebooted when you are requested to do so! The installation will otherwise not be carried out correctly and the contents of the hard disk must be completely restored.
Getting started Switching on the device (with main power switch) I 1 0 0 = Device is off I = Device is on ► Switch the device on with the main power switch (1) on the back of the device. ► Press the ON/OFF switch (2) on the front of the device. The power-on indicator lights green and the device is started.

Installing the software ► During installation, follow the on-screen instructions. ► If anything is unclear regarding the data you are asked to input, read the online Help in your operating system.
Getting started Connecting external devices Read the documentation on the external device before connecting it. With the exception of USB devices, always remove all power plugs before connecting external devices! Do not connect or disconnect cables during a thunderstorm. Always take hold of the actual plug when disconnecting a cable. Never pull the cable! Connect and disconnect the cables in the order described below. Cable connecting ► Switch off all affected devices.
Getting started Ports on the device Device Externaldevices Ports The ports are located on the front and back of the device. Not all ports are necessarily present on your device. The standard ports are marked with the symbols shown below (or similar). Detailed information on the location of the connections is provided in the manual for the mainboard.
Getting started 1 2 1 = Mainboard monitor ports 2 = Graphics card external monitor ports ► Follow the instructions contained in the monitor manual to prepare the monitor for operation (e.g. connecting cables). ► Plug the data cable into the suitable monitor port for the device (VGA, DVI-I, DisplayPort). The monitor power cable may only be connected to the monitor socket of the device if the monitor current consumption is less than 1.5 A at 230 V or 3 A at 115 V.
Getting started When you connect the monitor to the monitor socket of the device, it automatically switches off as soon as the device switches off. Connecting the mouse Depending on the equipment level selected, your device will be supplied with a USB mouse or a PS/2 mouse. Connecting, Mouse, Connecting a USB mouse ► Connect the USB mouse to one of the USB ports on the device.
Getting started ► Depending on the device, connect the data cable to the parallel port or the serial port. For an exact description of how to connect external devices to the corresponding port, please refer to the documentation of the external device. Port settings Serialport, Parallelport You can change the port settings (e.g. address, interrupt) in the BIOS Setup. Device drivers Device drivers, drivers The devices connected to the parallel or serial port require drivers.
Operation Operation Switch the device on ► If necessary, switch the monitor on (see the operating manual for the monitor). ► Switch on the device using the main power switch located on the rear of the device (if present). ► Press the ON/OFF switch on the front of the device. The power-on indicator lights green and the device is started.
Operation Switching off the device ► Shut down the operating system in a defined manner. In Windows: via the Start menu and the Turn Off Computer function. ► If the operating system does not automatically switch the device into energy-saving mode or switch it off, press the ON/OFF switch. Warning, this could lead to a loss of data! If the device is in standby, it consumes a minimum of energy. ► Switch the device off at the main switch (if present). The device no longer uses any power.
Operation Indicators on the device The indicators are on the front of the casing. Which indicators are available on your device depends on the configuration level you have selected. 1 2 3 1 Indicator Drive indicator 2 Hard disk indicator 3 Power-on indicator Description The indicator lights up when the CD-ROM or DVD drive of the device is accessed. You must never under any circumstances remove the CD/DVD while the indicator is lit.

Operation Start key Keys, calls up the Windows Start menu. Keys, Menu key calls up the menu for the marked item (Windows). Keys, Shift key enables upper-case letters and the upper key symbols to be displayed. Keys, Alt Gr key produces a character shown on the bottom right of a key (e.g. the @ sign on the Q key). Num Lock key Keys, By pressing the Num Lock key you switch between the upper- and lower-case levels of the calculator keypad.

Consult the manual for your Kensington Lock. with the holes (2) and a padlock and chain which you have connected to a fixed object beforehand.
Operation Mechanical casing lock (optional) Lock lock Casing mechanicallock With the casing lock you can mechanically lock the casing to prohibit unauthorised persons from opening it. The keys can be found on the rear panel of your device. 2 1 Locking the casing ► Turn the key in the direction of the arrow (1). Unlocking the casing ► Turn the key in the direction of the arrow (2).
Operation Access authorisation via SmartCard Accesspermission,SmartCard Securityfunctions, In systems equipped with a SmartCard reader, access can be restricted to those users who have a corresponding SmartCard. Access protection with SystemLock Securityfunctions, With SystemLock, you can protect your system from unauthorised booting. A system can then only be booted when the user inserts a valid SmartCard into the SmartCard reader and enters his/her personal code number (PIN).
Troubleshooting and tips Troubleshooting and tips Refer to the safety notes in the "Safety" manual and in the "Getting started", Page 12 chapter when connecting or disconnecting cables.
Troubleshooting and tips The device cannot be switched off with the ON/OFF switch. Cause The device has not been switched on with the ON/OFF switch. Remedy System crash ► Keep the on/off switch pressed for at least 4 seconds until the machine switches off. Caution: This can lead to a loss of data! ► Press the ON/OFF switch again. This procedure does not allow the operating system to shut down in an orderly way. The next time the system is started there may well be error messages.
Troubleshooting and tips Cause Monitor cable not connected Wrong monitor has been set under Window XP Remedy ► Switch off the monitor and the device. ► Check that the monitor cable is properly connected to the device and monitor. ► Switch on the monitor and the device. ► Restart the device. ► Press F8 while the system is booting. Either the Windows Advanced Start Options menu or the menu for selecting the operating system appears. ► If the menu for selecting the operating system appears, press F8 .
Troubleshooting and tips Cause Wrong monitor has been set under Windows 7 The wrong RAM modules have been inserted Remedy ► Restart the device. ► Press F8 while the system is booting. Either the Windows Advanced Start Options menu or the menu for selecting the operating system appears. ► If the menu for selecting the operating system appears, press F8 . ► Select Safe Mode or Safe Mode with Network.
Troubleshooting and tips Time and/or date is not correct Cause Time and date are incorrect. Remedy ► Set the correct time and date within the operating system you are using. or ► Set the correct time and/or date in the BIOS Setup. The lithium battery is discharged. ► If the time and date are repeatedly wrong when you switch on your device, replace the lithium battery (see "Replacing the lithium battery", Page 61).
System expansions System expansions System expansion Device, Upgrades, Servicing Components Repairs to the device must only be carried out by qualified technicians. Unauthorised opening or incorrect repair may greatly endanger the user (electric shock, fire risk) and will invalidate your warranty. After consulting the Hotline/Help Desk, you may remove and install the components described in this manual yourself.
System expansions Information about boards Take care with the locking mechanisms (catches and centring pins) when you are replacing boards or components on boards. Note that some components on the mainboard may be very hot if the device was in use shortly before the casing was removed. These components can be marked with the adjacent symbol. To prevent damage to the board or the components and conductors on it, please take care when you insert or remove boards.
System expansions Opening the casing Casing, Device, ► Switch the device off. The device must not be in power-saving mode. Please observe the safety information in "Important notes", Page 9. Disconnect the mains plug from the mains outlet. Only insert the power plug after you have closed the casing. ► Remove any connected wires which are in the way. ► On devices with a casing lock: Unlock the casing. ► Lay the device on its side.
System expansions Closing the casing ► Insert the side part in the guide rail on the lower part of the casing. Device, Casing, 1 ► Swivel the side cover in the direction of the arrow (1) until it engages. ► On devices with a casing lock: Lock the casing. ► Reconnect the cables that you disconnected before.
System expansions Installing the locking device with casing lock Removing the locking device ► Open the casing (see "Opening the casing", Page 37). ► Place the removed side part on a flat surface with the inside facing upwards. 2 1 1 ► Press the catch in the direction of the arrow (1). ► Carefully thread the locking device out of the side part in the direction of the arrow (2).
System expansions Installing the locking device with casing lock 1 2 3 2 ► Turn the removed side part over (so that the outside faces upwards). ► Guide the locking device with the casing lock in the direction of the arrow (1) into the side part. ► Press the catch in the direction of the arrow (2) and at the same time press the locking device into the side part (3) until the catch engages.
System expansions Opening the drive cage ► Open the casing (see "Opening the casing", Page 37). 1 2 ► Unscrew the knurled screw (1). ► Fold open the drive cage (2). Thanks to the integrated torque controller the drive cage will stop in any position.
System expansions Closing the drive cage 2 1 ► Fold down the drive cage (1). Be careful that no wires become trapped. ► Secure the drive cage with the knurled screw (2). ► Close the casing (see "Closing the casing", Page 38).
System expansions Removing ventilation duct Ventilation duct When removing the ventilation duct, be careful not to damage the processor cooler(s) on the mainboard. 1 2 ► ► ► ► ► ► Open the casing (see "Opening the casing", Page 37). Fold up the drive cage (see "Opening the drive cage", Page 41). Unhook the wires from the holder on the ventilation duct. Remove any connected wires which are in the way. Unlock the ventilation duct by pressing locking hooks in the direction of the arrow (1).
System expansions Installing the ventilation duct Ventilation duct When fitting the ventilation duct, be careful not to damage the processor cooler(s) on the mainboard. 1 ► Insert the latches on the underside of the ventilation duct into the corresponding slots in the casing. ► Press the ventilation duct into the casing in the direction of the arrow (1) so that the locking hook is felt to engage. ► Reconnect the cables that were previously disconnected.
System expansions Installing and removing a board You can install additional modules in order to increase the performance of your machine. The number, position and arrangement of the board slots on the mainboard can be found in the manual for the mainboard. Boards may already be installed on shipment. Board, Installing a board ► Open the casing (see "Opening the casing", Page 37). ► Fold up the drive cage (see "Opening the drive cage", Page 41).
System expansions Do not throw away the slot cover. For cooling, protection against fire and in order to comply with EMC regulations, you must refit the slot cover if you remove the board. 2 1 ► ► ► ► ► Push the board into the slot (1). Press on the retaining clip until it you feel it engage (2). If necessary, connect the cables to the board. Fold down the drive cage (see "Closing the drive cage", Page 42). Close the casing (see "Closing the casing", Page 38).
System expansions 1 2 ► Press on the curved part of the retaining clip (1). ► Pull the board out of the slot in the direction of the arrow (2). ► Place the board in suitable packaging. For cooling, protection against fire, and in order to comply with EMC (electromagnetic compatibility) regulations, you must refit the slot cover. 2 1 ► Slide the slot cover into the slot (1). ► Press on the retaining clip until it you feel it engage (2).
System expansions ► Close the casing (see "Closing the casing", Page 38). If you have installed or removed a PCI board, please check the relevant PCI slot settings in the BIOS Setup. If necessary, change the settings. Further information is provided in the PCI board documentation. Low-profile boards Low-profileboard You will need to fit a corresponding slot adapter first before you can install a low-profile board in a normal board slot.

System expansions Removing an accessible drive ► Open the casing (see "Opening the casing", Page 37). 1 2 ► ► ► ► ► Pull the data and the power supply connectors from the drive. Open the retaining clip (1). Pull the drive out of the casing in the direction of the arrow (2). If necessary, make the required settings on the remaining hard disk drives. If you do not install a new drive, secure a cover (optional) at the location so that no foreign bodies can enter the casing.
System expansions Installing an accessible drive ► Open the casing (see "Opening the casing", Page 37). ► If you are installing the drive in the upper bay and a cover (optional) is already in place, please remove it. or ► If you are installing the drive in the lower bay, break out the pre-stamped metal panel on the drive bay opening using a screwdriver. Do not throw away the cover.
System expansions Installing and removing the hard disk drive Removing the hard disk drive ► Open the casing (see "Opening the casing", Page 37). ► Fold up the drive cage (see "Opening the drive cage", Page 41). ► Disconnect all cables connected to the drive (data cable, power supply cable). 1 1 2 ► Slightly press together the EasyChange rails mounted on the hard disk (1) and pull the hard disk drive out of the drive cage in the direction of the arrow (2).
System expansions ► If you no longer need the EasyChange rails, secure them again at their location in the drive cage. It may be necessary to modify the entry for the drive in the BIOS Setup. Installing a hard disk drive ► Open the casing (see "Opening the casing", Page 37). ► Fold up the drive cage (see "Opening the drive cage", Page 41). EasyChange rails for a second hard disk drive are mounted on the drive cage.
System expansions ► Secure the EasyChange rails on the side of the hard disk by inserting the upper pins of the EasyChange rail in the corresponding holes of the hard disk. 1 ► Slide the hard disk drive with the EasyChange rails in the direction of the arrow (1) into the drive cage. Check that the component side of the hard disk drive faces inwards towards the casing. ► Connect the cables to the hard disk drive. ► Fold down the drive cage (see "Closing the drive cage", Page 42).
System expansions Installing/removing a SmartCard reader and/or WLAN module (optional) You can also install a SmartCard reader and/or a WLAN module for wireless LAN (Local Area Network) in the installation bay for the 3½ inch hard disk drive. The SmartCard reader and WLAN module can be installed together in the carrier. However, you can also install only one of the two boards. The WLAN module is installed in the lower slot of the carrier and the SmartCard reader in the upper slot of the carrier.

Connect the data cable connectors to the holder. Make sure the polarity is correct. Close the casing (see "Closing the casing", Page 38).

Removing SmartCard reader from carrier 1 1 58 ► Undo the screws (1). ► Pull the SmartCard reader out of the carrier in the direction of the arrow (2).
System expansions Removing WLAN module from carrier 1 ► Undo the screws (1). ► Pull the WLAN module out of the holder in the direction of the arrow. 1 Installing USB ports on the rear panel Depending on your device configuration, an installation slot for USB interfaces is provided on the back of the casing. As a result, no board slot is occupied. 1 ► Insert a screwdriver into the opening and break out the pre-stamped installation opening by moving it backwards and forwards.
System expansions Mainboard expansions Details on how to upgrade the main memory or the processor of your device can be found in the manual for the mainboard. System expansions Replacing the lithium battery In order to permanently save the system information, a lithium battery is installed to provide the CMOS-memory with a current. A corresponding error message notifies the user when the charge is too low or the battery is empty. The lithium battery must then be replaced.
