Getting Started DR AF 1. Locate the black or gray lithium-ion battery that came in the product box. 2. Slide the battery cover off the back of the nüvi. 4. Locate the metal contacts on the end of the lithium-ion battery. Insert the battery so the metal contacts on the battery match up with the metal contacts inside the battery compartment. Press the battery down into place. 5. Slide the battery cover back on until it clicks into place.
Getting Started Check your state and local traffic laws before mounting. Currently, state laws in California and Minnesota prohibit drivers from using suction mounts on their windshields while operating motor vehicles. Other Garmin dashboard or friction mounting options should be used. See page 49. Cradle Step 1: Mount the nüvi DR AF T Power cable 1. Plug the vehicle power cable into the power connector on the right side of the cradle. 2. Snap the cradle onto the suction cup arm. Suction cup mount 3.

Getting Started Finding Your Destination T The Where to? menu provides several different categories for you to use when searching for addresses, cities, and other locations. The detailed map loaded in your nüvi contains millions of points of interest, such as restaurants, hotels, and auto services. 2. Select a category. 3. Select a sub-category. 4. Select a destination. 5. Touch Go!. 6. Enjoy the route! DR AF 1. Touch Where to?. Tip: Touch and to see more choices.
Getting Started Following Your Route Adding a Via Point You can add a stop (via point) to your route. The nüvi gives you directions to the stop and then to your final destination. TIP: If you want to add more than one stop to the route, edit the current route. See page 12. T As you travel, your nüvi guides you to your destination with voice prompts, arrows on the map, and directions at the top of the map.
Getting Started If a road on your route is closed, you can take a detour. 1. With a route active, touch Menu. 2. Touch Detour. From the Menu page, touch Volume. Touch and to adjust the master volume. Touch Mute to mute all audio. To set up the FM transmitter, see pages 35 to 36. Locking the Screen To prevent accidental screen taps, slide the Power key to the right ( ). To unlock the screen, slide the Power key to the center position.
Where To The Where to? menu provides several different categories you can use to search for locations. To learn how to perform a simple search, see page 5. Tip: Touch Near… to change the search area. See page 13. If a mobile phone with Bluetooth wireless technology is connected, touch to call this location. Finding an Address 1. Touch Where to? > Address. 2. Touch Change State/Province, if necessary. 3. Touch Search All. OR Touch Spell City, enter the city/postal code, and touch Done.
Where To If you know the name of the location you are looking for, you can spell it using the on-screen keyboard. You can also enter letters contained in the name to narrow the search. Touch Mode to select the keyboard language mode. Touch to enter numbers and special characters. Tip: You can change the keyboard layout to QWERTY, which is like a standard computer keyboard layout. See page 37. DR AF 1. Touch Where to? > Points of Interest > Spell Name. 2.
Where To To change your home location, you must first delete it from Favorites. 1. Touch Where to? > Favorites. 2. Touch Home > Edit > Delete > Yes. To remove all places from the Recently Found list, touch Clear > Yes. Note: When you touch Clear, all items from the list are removed. It does not delete the actual place from your unit. Favorites DR AF After you delete your home location, reset it by following the steps in the “Setting a Home Location” section above.
Where To 1. After you have found a place you want to save, touch Save. 2. Touch OK. The place is saved in Favorites. Finding Saved Places 1. Touch Where to?. 2. Touch Favorites. Your saved locations are listed. • Delete—removes this item from the Favorites list. Touch Yes. DR AF Tip: Your Last Position is automatically saved each time you remove the nüvi from the cradle. Use this feature to find your car in a parking lot. 4.
Where To • Touch Optimally Reorder Points to automatically order the points. • Touch Recalculate to change the route preference to calculate by faster time, shorter distance, or off road. • Touch Delete to remove this item. DR AF 6. Touch to add another location to your route. Touch to remove a location. 7. Touch Next to calculate your route and view it on the map. 8. Touch Save to save the route and exit. • Touch Change Name. Enter a new name, and touch Done.
Where To Use the Browse Map page to view different parts of the map. Touch Where to? > Browse Map. Tips for Browsing the Map 1. Touch Where to? > Coordinates. 2. Touch Format to change the type of coordinates. Because different maps and charts use different position formats, the nüvi allows you to choose the correct coordinate format for the type of map you are using. 3. Enter the coordinates, and touch Done. DR AF • Touch the map, and drag to view different parts of the map.
Where To Note: Your nüvi automatically searches for places near your current location. 1. Touch Where to? > Near…. 2. Select an option: If you are not following roadways as you navigate, use Off Road mode. Touch Tools > Settings > Navigation > Route Preference > Off Road > OK. Select a destination and touch Go! to navigate off road to the destination. Walking to a Destination If you are walking to your destination, use Pedestrian mode to optimize your route for walking.
Using the Main Pages Using the Main Pages Map Page Touch View map to open the Map page. The vehicle icon shows your current location. Touch and drag the map to view a different area of the map (see page 13). Touch the text bar to open the Turn List page. to zoom out. Touch DR AF Touch Menu to return to the Menu page. Touch Arrival or Speed to open the Trip Information page. to zoom in.
Using the Main Pages The Trip Information page displays your current speed and provides helpful statistics about your trip. To view the Trip Information page, touch the Speed or Arrival field on the Map page. If you make frequent stops, leave the nüvi turned on so it can accurately measure elapsed time during the trip. When you are navigating a route, the Turn List page displays turn-by-turn instructions for your entire route and the distance between turns.
Speaking Commands Automatic speech recognition (ASR) allows you to use your nüvi by speaking the words you see on the screen. DR AF Press the large button on the remote to activate voice recognition. Speak when the green X Speak icon appears and the nüvi beeps. Speak commands exactly as they appear on the screen. • Speak slowly and clearly. • Speak commands exactly as they appear on the screen. • Respond to voice prompts from the device (when the device asks you to spell a name or enter an address).
Speaking Commands Activating the Remote Mounting the Remote DR AF Mount the ASR remote in a convenient location on your steering wheel. Use the strap to secure the remote in place. T If the GPS unit does not enter voice recognition mode, make sure the remote is activated. From the Menu page, touch Tools > Settings > System. Touch the button next to Remote. Then, touch Activate New Remote and press a button on the remote.
Using Hands-free Calling Using Bluetooth wireless technology, your nüvi can connect to your mobile phone to become a hands-free device. To see if your device with Bluetooth technology is compatible with the nüvi, visit www.garmin.com/bluetooth. To pair and connect, your phone and the nüvi must be turned on and be within 10 meters of each other. Initiate pairing from your nüvi or from your mobile phone. Refer to your phone’s instructions. To pair using the phone settings: 1.
Using Hands-free Calling The internal microphone is in the front of the nüvi; speak normally. In a Call During a call, the In Call icon appears. Touch > End Call to hang up. Touch > Call Options for the following options: DR AF When your phone is connected to your nüvi, you are ready to make phone calls. Touch Phone to access the Phone menu. Ignore to ignore the call and stop the phone from ringing. T 2. Enable your phone’s Bluetooth component and enable Find Me/ Discoverable/Visible mode.
Using Hands-free Calling When you are on a call and you receive a second call (call waiting), the nüvi displays the Incoming Call window. Touch Answer to answer the call. The first call is placed on hold. To switch between calls: 1. Touch Phone > Phone Book. 2. Touch the phone book entry (contact) you want to call. 3. Touch Dial to call the contact, or touch Compose to send an SMS/text message. Dialing a Point of Interest 1. Touch Phone > Points of Interest. 2.
Using Hands-free Calling Calling Home Enter a phone number for your home location, so you can quickly call home. To enter your phone number: You can place calls by speaking the contact’s name. 1. Touch Phone > Voice Dial. 2. Speak the contact name. NOTE: You may need to “train” your mobile phone to recognize your voice dial commands. Refer to your phone’s instructions. DR AF 1. Using Media Players To create a new playlist: 1. In the music player, touch Browse > Playlists > Create New Playlist. 2. Select songs. 3. Touch Back when you have finished adding songs to your playlist. To create a playlist on a computer: 1. In the music player, touch Browse > Playlists > Open Saved Playlist. All available playlists appear. 2. Touch a playlist to start playing the music files. To edit a playlist: 1.
Using Media Players To purchase books from Audible.com, go to http://garmin.audible.com. Listening to a Book To create a bookmark, touch and Bookmark. To view your bookmarks, touch , and then touch a bookmark. Touch Play to listen to the book from the bookmark. Loading �������������� Audible Books 1. Create an Audible.com account at http://garmin.audible.com. 2. Download AudibleManager®. 3. Open AudibleManager. Follow the onscreen instructions to activate your nüvi (one-time process). 4.
Managing Files You can store files, such as MP3s and JPEG image files, in the nüvi’s internal memory or on an optional SD card. Loading Files Step 1: Insert an SD Card (Optional) To insert or remove the card, press it in until it clicks. Step 2: Connect the USB Cable DR AF Note: The nüvi is not compatible with Windows® 95, 98, Me, or NT. It is also not compatible with Mac® OS 10.3 and earlier. This is a common limitation of most USB mass storage devices.
Managing Files Step 3: Transfer Files to Your nüvi When you are finished transferring files, click the Eject icon in your system tray, or drag the volume icon to the Trash on Mac computers. Unplug your nüvi from your computer. Deleting Files With the nüvi connected to your computer, open nüvi or SD card drive/ volume. Highlight the file that you want to delete, and press the Delete key on your computer’s keyboard. DR AF Copy and paste files from your computer into the nüvi drives/volumes.
Using the Tools The Tools menu provides many features that are helpful when you are traveling across town or across the globe. Settings For information about the settings, see pages 37 to 43. The Garmin Language Guide puts data from Oxford’s multilingual resources and five bilingual dictionaries in the palm of your hand. Using the Tools Currency Converter 1. Touch Tools > Currency Converter. 2. Touch a currency button to change the currency. 3. Select a currency, and touch OK. 4. Touch the rectangle next to the currency you want to convert. 5. Enter the number. Touch Done. 6. Touch Clear to convert a different value. DR AF 1. Touch Tools > Calculator. 2. Enter the first number of your calculation. 3. Touch an operator (÷, x, -, or +). 4. Enter the second number of your calculation. • Touch . to add a decimal.

Touch Conversion, select a type of measurement, and touch OK. 3. Touch a unit of measure that you want to change. 4. Select a unit of measure, and touch OK. Repeat, if necessary. 5. Touch the blank rectangle to enter a value. 6. Enter a value, and touch Done. The unit is converted. 7.

Routes Use this tool to manage and delete your saved data, such as your Favorites. If you have transferred a route from MapSource, touch Import Route from File to use that route in your nüvi. Using FM Traffic Using FM Traffic Note: You can only access the traffic information if the nüvi is connected to an FM traffic receiver. The traffic receiver is included in some nüvi packages. Using FM Traffic Traffic In Your Area Touch Tools > Traffic to display traffic incidents in your area. Touch View by Road to see the incidents on each road in the area. If there is traffic on your route, touch On My Route to view details. Traffic on Your Road When calculating your route, the nüvi examines the current traffic and automatically optimizes the route for the shortest time. You might still be routed through traffic if no alternative roads exist.
Using FM Traffic North American Meaning Traffic Subscriptions International Road Condition Road Construction Road Closed Slow Traffic Note: You do not need to activate the subscription included with your FM traffic receiver (if it came with one). The subscription activates automatically after your nüvi acquires satellite signals while receiving traffic signals from the pay service provider. Playing Audio Through the Vehicle’s Speakers Before using the FM transmitter in your area, see the FM transmitter legal notice on page 52. Auto Tuning the FM Transmitter DR AF If an FM transmitter is available on your nüvi, you can listen to your nüvi audio on an FM stereo. 1. From the Menu page, touch Volume > FM Trans > Enable FM Transmitter. 2. Tune your stereo to an FM channel that has a lot of static and has a low FM frequency number. 3.
Playing Audio Through the Vehicle’s Speakers For best results, select a frequency below 90.1 FM. When searching for an appropriate FM frequency on your FM stereo, look for an unused frequency that has steady, consistent static. If you hear slight noises and sounds in the background of the static, choose a different frequency. As you drive, you may notice changes in the background static even though there is no FM station using that channel.
Customizing the nüvi Customizing the nüvi 1. Touch Tools > Settings. Usage Mode—specify how you will be navigating to optimize routes: Automobile, Bicycle, or Pedestrian. Units—change units of measure to Kilometers or Miles. T 2. Touch the setting you want to change. Keyboard Layout—select QWERTY for a layout similar to a typewriter, or select ABCDE for an alphabetical layout. DR AF About—display your nüvi’s software version number, unit ID number, and audio version number.
Customizing the nüvi Screen Shot—enable Screen Shot mode. Touch the to take a screen shot. The picture bitmap file is saved in the Garmin\scrn folder on the nüvi drive. Brightness—adjust the backlight brightness level. Reducing the backlight brightness increases your battery life. T Restore—restore the original display settings. DR AF • Faster Time—to calculate routes that are faster to drive but can be longer in distance.
Customizing the nüvi Touch Tools > Settings > Language. Touch Tools > Settings > Map. Map Detail—adjust the amount of detail shown on the map. Showing more detail may cause the map to redraw slower. Map View—select a map perspective. • Track Up—display the map in two dimensions (2D) with your direction of travel at the top. • North Up—display the map in 2D with North at the top. • 3D—display the map in three dimensions (3D) in Track Up.
Customizing the nüvi Tools > My Data > Clear Trip Log. PIN or Security Location. Map Info—view the maps loaded on your nüvi and their version. Touch a map to enable (check mark) or disable (no check mark) that map. Viewing Traffic Subscription Information Adding Security Settings DR AF Touch Tools > Settings > Security. Note: You can only access the traffic settings if your nüvi is connected to external power and an FM TMC traffic receiver. T Restore—restore the original map settings.
Customizing the nüvi Auto—select which provider to use. Select Auto to use the best provider for the area, or select a specific provider to use. Search—search for additional TMC traffic providers. To increase the search time, touch Yes to clear provider table. 1. From the Menu page, touch Tools > Settings > Traffic. 2. For Non-North American units, touch Subscriptions > Add. For North American units, touch Add. 3. Write down the FM traffic receiver’s unit ID. 4. Go to www.garmin.
Customizing the nüvi Note: The nüvi’s PIN code (or passkey) is 1234. Restore—restore the original Bluetooth settings. This does not clear the pairing information. Changing the Proximity Points Settings DR AF Drop—select the phone you want to disconnect, and touch Yes. Troubleshoot—scroll through the list containing compatible devices. If your phone is not in this list, go to www.garmin.com/bluetooth for more information.
Customizing the nüvi Restore—restore the proximity points settings. Adjusting the Volume Levels Caution: This deletes all userentered information. 1. Hold your finger on the lower-right corner of the nüvi’s screen while turning on the nüvi. 2. Keep your finger pressed until the message appears. 3. Touch Yes to clear all user data. All original settings are restored. Any items that you have saved are erased. DR AF From the Menu page, touch Volume to adjust the master volume level.
Appendix Ways to Charge Your nüvi • Use the vehicle power cable. • Use the USB cable. • Use an optional AC adapter cable. Calibrating the Screen Locking Your nüvi Garmin Lock™ is a theft-deterrent system that locks your nüvi. Each time you turn on the nüvi, enter the PIN or drive to the security location. 1. Touch Tools > Settings > Security. 2. Touch the button below Garmin Lock. 3. Enter a 4-digit PIN and drive to a security location.
Appendix Additional Maps 1. Go to www.garmin.com/products/ webupdater and download WebUpdater to your computer. 2. Connect the nüvi to your computer using the mini-USB cable. 3. Run WebUpdater, and follow the onscreen instructions. After confirming that you want to perform an update, WebUpdater automatically downloads the update and installs it on your nüvi. DR AF You can purchase additional MapSource map data from Garmin and load the maps on your nüvi’s internal memory or on an optional SD card.
Appendix Much like a paper travel guide, the Garmin Travel Guide provides detailed information about places, such as restaurants and hotels. To purchase an accessory, go to http://buy.garmin.com or contact your Garmin dealer. Safety camera information is available in some locations. Check http://my.garmin .com for availability. For these locations, the nüvi includes the locations of hundreds of safety cameras.
Appendix Use the POI Loader to load custom points of interest (POIs) onto your nüvi. POI databases are available from various companies on the Internet. Some custom databases contain alert information for points, such as safety cameras and school zones. The TourGuide allows your nüvi to play third-party, GPS-guided audio tours. These audio tours can take you on a route while playing interesting facts about historical sites along the way. For more information, go to www.garmin .
Appendix Your nüvi contains a user-replaceable, lithium-ion battery. To maximize the lifetime of the battery, do not leave your nüvi in direct sunlight, and avoid prolonged exposure to excessive heat. Caution: When replacing the fuse, do not lose any of the small pieces and make sure they are put back in the proper place. If your unit will not charge in your vehicle, you may need to replace the fuse located at the tip of the vehicle adapter. 1. Unscrew the black, round end piece, and remove it. 2.
Appendix To remove the nüvi from the cradle, press the button on the bottom of the cradle up, and tilt the nüvi forward. To remove the cradle from the mount, turn the cradle to the right or left. Apply pressure in that direction until the cradle snaps off the mount. Use the enclosed mounting disk to mount your unit to the dashboard and comply with certain state regulations. Caution: The permanent mounting adhesive is extremely difficult to remove after it is installed.
Appendix Your nüvi must acquire GPS (Global Positioning System) satellite signals to navigate. If you are indoors, near tall buildings or trees, or in a parking garage, your nüvi cannot acquire satellites. Go outside to an area free from tall obstructions to use your nüvi. Your nüvi contains sensitive electronic components that can be permanently damaged if exposed to excessive shock or vibration.
Appendix Clean the touch screen with a soft, clean, lint-free cloth. Use water, isopropyl alcohol, or eyeglass cleaner, if needed. Apply the liquid to the cloth, and then gently wipe the touch screen. Protecting Your nüvi • To avoid theft, remove the unit and mount from sight when not in use. Remove the residue on the windshield left by the suction cup. • Do not keep your unit in the glove compartment. • Register your product at http://my.garmin.com. • Use the Garmin Lock feature. See page 44.
Appendix Your nüvi product contains an FM transmitter. Read the following notices. Using Your nüvi FM Transmitter in Europe While use of FM transmitters is legal in the United States, the allowable output power for FM transmitters is lower in the United States than it is in those European countries that allow FM transmitters. The nüvi models sold in Europe contain the higher powered European FM transmitter and cannot be legally used in the United States.

Appendix Troubleshooting Problem/Question Solution/Answer My nüvi never gets satellite signals. Take your nüvi out of parking garages and away from tall buildings and trees. Remain stationary for several minutes. The suction cup will not stay on my windshield. Clean the suction cup and windshield with rubbing alcohol. Dry with a clean, dry cloth. Mount the suction cup as described on page 3. T Your nüvi can only charge between 32°F and 113°F (0°C and 45°C).
Appendix Solution/Answer How do I know my nüvi is in USB mass storage mode? When your nüvi is in USB mass storage mode, a picture of a nüvi connected to a computer is shown. Also, you should see two new removable disk drives listed in My Computer. My computer never senses that the nüvi is connected. 1. Unplug the USB cable from your computer. 2. Turn the nüvi off. 3. Plug the USB cable into your computer and your nüvi. The nüvi automatically turns on and goes into USB mass storage mode.
