Introduction Introduction Manual Conventions When you are instructed to “touch” something, use your finger to touch an item on the screen. The small arrows (>) used in the text indicate that you should touch a series of items. For example, if you see “touch Where to? > Favorites” you should touch Where to?, and then touch Favorites. Getting Started Step 1: Install the Battery 1. Locate the rectangular lithium-ion battery that came in the product box. 2. Slide the battery cover off the back of the nüvi. 3. Locate the metal contacts on the end of the lithium-ion battery. 4. Insert the battery so that the metal contacts on the battery match up with the metal contacts inside the battery compartment. Step 2: Mount the nüvi 1. Plug the vehicle power cable into the power connector on the right side of the cradle.
Getting Started 4. Flip the lever back, toward the windshield. 5. Fit the bottom of your nüvi into the cradle. 6. Tilt the nüvi back until it snaps into place. 7. Plug the other end of the vehicle power cable into a power outlet in your vehicle. Your unit should turn on automatically if it is plugged in and your vehicle is running. 8. If you are using a traffic receiver in Europe, secure the traffic receiver antenna to the windshield using the suction cups.
Getting Started Step 4: Configure the nüvi To turn on your nüvi, slide the Power key to the left. Follow the on-screen instructions. Understanding the Menu Page ➌ ➍ ➊ ➋ ➎ Step 5: Acquire Satellites Go outdoors to an open area, out of garages, and away from tall buildings. Stop your vehicle, and turn on the nüvi. Acquiring satellite signals can take a few minutes. The bars indicate GPS satellite strength. When one bar is green, the nüvi has acquired satellite signals.
Getting Started Finding Your Destination The Where to? menu provides several different categories for you to use when searching for addresses, cities, and other locations. The detailed maps loaded in your nüvi contain millions of points of interest, such as restaurants, hotels, and auto services. 1. Touch Where to?. 2. Select a category. 4. Select a destination. Tip: Touch and nüvi 800 Series Owner’s Manual 3. Select a subcategory. 5. Touch Go!. to see more choices.
Getting Started Following Your Route As you travel, your nüvi guides you to your destination with voice prompts, arrows on the map, and directions at the top of the map. If you depart from the original route, your nüvi recalculates the route and provides new directions. Your route is marked with a magenta line. Follow the arrows as you take turns. Adding a Stop You can add a stop (called a via point) to your route. The nüvi gives you directions to the via point and then to your final destination.
Getting Started Taking a Detour 1. With a route active, touch Menu. 2. Touch Detour. The nüvi attempts to get you back on your original route as quickly as possible. If the route you are currently taking is the only reasonable option, the nüvi might not calculate a detour. Stopping the Route 1. With a route active, touch Menu. 2. Touch Stop. Speaking Commands Use the speech recognition feature to speak to your nüvi to find destinations and select options.
Where to? Where to? The Where to? menu provides several different categories you can use to search for locations. To learn how to perform a simple search, see page 5. Tip: Touch Near… to change the search area. See page 14. Go! Page Options Touch an item in the search results list to view the Go! page. Touch Go! to create a turn-by-turn route to this location. If a mobile phone with Bluetooth wireless technology is connected, touch to call this location.
Where to? note: Depending on the version of the maps loaded on your nüvi, the button names can change and some steps could be ordered differently. Finding a Place by Spelling the Name If you know the name of the location you are looking for, you can spell it using the on-screen keyboard. You can also enter letters contained in the name to narrow the search. 1. Touch Where to? > Points of Interest > Spell Name. 2. Using the on-screen keyboard, enter letters in the name. Touch Done.
Where to? Going Home After you set your home location, you can route to it at any time by touching Where to? > Go Home. Changing Your Home Location To change your home location, you must first delete it from Favorites. 1. Touch Where to? > Favorites. 2. Touch Home > Edit > Delete > Yes. After you delete your home location, reset it by following the steps on page 9. Finding Recently-Found Places Your nüvi stores the last 50 of your recent finds in the Recently Found list.
Where to? Saving Places You Find 1. After you have found a place you want to save, touch Save. 2. Touch OK. The place is saved in Favorites. Finding Saved Places 1. Touch Where to?. 2. Touch Favorites. Your saved locations are listed. Tip: Your Last Position is automatically saved each time you remove the nüvi from the cradle. Use this feature to find your car in a parking lot. Editing Saved Places 1. Touch Where to? > Favorites. 2. Touch the location you want to edit. 3. Touch Edit. 4.
Where to? 1. Touch Where to? > Favorites > Panoramio Photos. Pictures you have saved on the nüvi drive or on the microSD card are listed. 2. Touch a picture. 3. Touch Go! to navigate to the location. Touch Show Map to view the location on the map. Finding a Place Using the Map Use the Browse Map page to view different parts of the map. Touch Where to? > Browse Map. Tips for Browsing the Map • Touch the map, and drag to view different parts of the map. • Touch and to zoom out and in.
Where to? Creating and Editing Routes Touch Where to? > Routes. Select the route you want to take and touch Go!. Creating a Saved Route Use your nüvi to create and save routes before your next trip. You can save up to 10 routes. 1. Touch Where to? (or Tools) > Routes > New. 2. Touch Add New Start Point. 3. Find a location as your starting point, and touch Select. 4. Touch Add New End Point. 5. Find a location as your ending point, and touch Select. 6. Touch to add another location to your route.
Where to? • Recalculate—change the route preference to calculate by faster time, shorter distance, or off road. • Delete—remove this route. Note: Your changes are automatically saved when you exit any of the route edit pages. Searching Near Another Location Note: Your nüvi automatically searches for places near your current location. 1. Touch Where to? > Near…. 2. Select an option: • Where I Am Now—search near your current location. • A Different City—search near the city you enter.
Using the Main Pages Using the Main Pages Map Page Touch View map to open the Map page. The vehicle icon shows your current location. Touch and drag the map to view a different area of the map (see page 12). Touch the text bar to open the Turn List page. Touch to zoom out. Touch Touch Menu to return to the Menu page. Touch Arrival or Speed to open the Trip Computer page. to zoom in. To save your current location, touch the vehicle icon.
Using the Main Pages Trip Computer Page The Trip Computer page displays your current speed and provides helpful statistics about your trip. To view the Trip Computer page, touch the Speed or Arrival field on the Map page. If you make frequent stops, leave the nüvi turned on so it can accurately measure elapsed time during the trip. Resetting Trip Computer If you want accurate trip information, reset the trip computer before beginning a trip.
Speaking Commands Speaking Commands The speech recognition feature allows you to speak to your nüvi to find destinations, select options, and perform other functions. Using the Remote Control Use the remote control to start or stop a speech recognition session. 2. Touch Activate New Remote. 3. Press a button on the remote control. Activating Speech Recognition 1. Press the large button on the remote control. 2. Wait for the green speak icon to appear. 3. Speak a command.
Speaking Commands 2. Listen for the voice prompt before speaking your next command. To speak shortcut commands: 1. Speak any shortcut command from the shortcut commands listed below. You can use shortcut commands from any screen. 2. Listen for the voice prompt before speaking your next command.

Speak Find Place by Name from any screen. “Starbucks” 3. A list of places appears. Speak the line number of the place you want. “Line 1” “Find Place by Name” 2. Listen for the voice prompt, and speak the name of the place. The nüvi repeats the name of the place as it is searching. 4.
Speaking Commands Note: You can only speak the names of very popular, well-known locations. Use the Where To? menu categories to search for other locations. To speak an address: 1. Speak Find Address from any screen. 2. Respond to the prompts to speak or spell the city name, the house number, and the street. Recognizing Icons and Tones • The nüvi sounds two tones when it enters speech recognition mode. • The nüvi sounds two tones when it exits speech recognition mode.
Making Hands-Free Phone Calls Making Hands Free Phone Calls Note: Bluetooth wireless technology is not available on the nüvi 850. Using Bluetooth wireless technology, your nüvi can connect to your mobile phone to become a hands-free device. To determine whether your mobile phone with Bluetooth technology is compatible with the nüvi, visit www.garmin.com /bluetooth. Bluetooth wireless technology establishes a wireless link between devices, such as a mobile phone and the nüvi.
Making Hands-Free Phone Calls To pair using the nüvi settings: 1. From the Menu page, touch Tools > Settings > Bluetooth > Add. 2. Enable Bluetooth component on your phone and enable Find Me/ Discoverable/Visible mode. These settings might be in a Bluetooth, Connections, or Hands-free menu. 3. Touch OK on the nüvi. 4. Select your phone, and touch OK. 5. Enter the nüvi Bluetooth PIN (1234) in your phone. When your phone is connected to your nüvi, you are ready to make phone calls.
Making Hands-Free Phone Calls Using Call Waiting When you are on a call and you receive a second call (call waiting), the nüvi displays the Incoming Call window. Touch Answer to answer the call. The first call is placed on hold. To switch between calls: 1. Touch > Switch To. 2. Touch End Call to hang up. This does not disconnect the call on hold. Hands Free Phone Menu From the Menu page, touch Hands Free to open the Hands Free phone menu.
Making Hands-Free Phone Calls Viewing Your Call History Each time your phone connects to the nüvi, your call history is automatically transferred to the nüvi. It can take a few minutes to transfer this data to the nüvi. 1. Touch Hands Free > Call History. 2. Touch a category to view those calls. The calls are listed in chronological order. The most-recent calls are at the top of the list. 3. Touch an entry, and touch Dial.
Making Hands-Free Phone Calls SMS/Text Messaging If your phone supports SMS/text messaging using Bluetooth technology, you can send and receive text messages on the nüvi. 6. Touch Send or Send as Location Message, if applicable, to send the message. Note: Messages sent from your nüvi do not appear in your phone’s outbox. Using Media Players Supported File Types The nüvi supports MP3 and FLAC music files, and M3U and M3U8 playlist files. Creating and Listening to Playlists Using your nüvi, you can listen to playlists created on your computer. You can also save playlists using your nüvi. To save your current playlist: 1. While listening to music, touch Browse > Playlists > Current Playlist > Save. 2. Enter a name for the playlist, and touch Done. To create a new playlist: 1.
Using Media Players To edit a playlist: 1. In the Music Player, touch Browse > Playlists. 2. Select the playlist you want to edit, and touch Edit: • Change Name—enter a new name, and touch Done. • Add Songs—browse the categories to find and add songs to the playlist. • Remove Songs—select the songs you want to remove from the playlist, and touch OK. • Delete Playlist—delete this playlist. Listening to Audible Books To purchase books from Audible.com®, go to http://garmin.audible.com.
Using Media Players Using Bookmarks To create a bookmark: 1. On the Audible Player, touch Create. 2. Touch Save. 3. Enter a name for the bookmark. 4. Touch Done. 5. Touch Edit to change the bookmark name or delete the bookmark. 5. Use AudibleManager to transfer the book to your nüvi or microSD card. TIP: Refer to the AudibleManager Help file for detailed instructions. Touch Help > Help. To play a bookmark: 1. On the Audible Player, touch View. 2. Touch a bookmark. 3.
Using Media Players Using a Backup Camera warning: Do not attempt to operate or watch video input while operating a vehicle. Driver operation or viewing of video input while the vehicle is moving could cause an accident or collision resulting in property damage, serious injury, or death. note: There will be black lines around the video image. Managing Files Managing Files You can store files, such as MP3s and JPEG image files, in the internal memory on the nüvi or on an microSD card. Note: The nüvi is not compatible with Windows® 95, 98, Me, or Windows NT®. It is also not compatible with Mac® OS 10.3 and earlier. This is a common limitation of most USB mass storage devices.
Managing Files Step 3: Transfer Files to Your nüvi Copy and paste files from your computer into the nüvi drives/volumes. 1. Browse your computer for the file you want to copy. 2. Highlight the file, and touch Edit > Copy. 3. Open the “Garmin” or microSD card drive/volume. 4. Touch Edit > Paste. The file appears in the list of files in the nüvi memory or on the microSD card.
Using the Tools Using the Tools The Tools menu provides many features that are helpful when you are traveling. From the Menu page, touch Tools to access the Tools menu. Routes For information about routes, see pages 13–14. Help Touch Help to get information about using your nüvi. Music Player For information about the Music Player, see pages 27–29. Touch anywhere on the screen to stop the slide show. Navigating to a Picture If a picture contains location information, touch Info, and then touch Go! to create a route to it. See page 33 for more information about loading pictures to your nüvi.

Unit Converter 1. Touch Tools > Unit Converter. 2. Touch the button below Convert, select a type of measurement, and touch OK. 3.

Touch the name of your Travel Guide to open it. SaversGuide® With the SaversGuide preprogrammed microSD data card and membership card, your nüvi is a digital coupon book. If the nüvi is not turned on at the alarm time, it will turn itself on and sound the alarm.
Using FM Traffic Using FM Traffic The traffic receiver is included in some nüvi packages. Use an FM TMC (Traffic Message Channel) traffic receiver to receive traffic information that is broadcast over the FM Radio Data System. For information about FM traffic receivers and coverage areas, see www.garmin .com/traffic. Note: Garmin is not responsible for the accuracy of the traffic information.
Using FM Traffic Traffic in Your Area Touch Tools > Traffic to display traffic incidents in your area. Touch View by Road to see the incidents on each road in the area. If there is traffic on your route, touch On My Route to view details. Traffic on Your Road When you are not navigating a route and there is traffic on your road, the Map page displays a traffic icon, such as or . Touch the icon to view information about the traffic delay.

Playing Audio Through the Vehicle’s Speakers Playing Audio Through the Vehicle’s Speakers Before using the FM transmitter in your area, see the FM transmitter legal notice on page 60. If an FM transmitter is available on your nüvi, you can listen to your nüvi audio on an FM stereo. Note: When using the FM transmitter function on the nüvi, any phone calls that you place or receive through the nüvi might be overheard by adjacent vehicles through the FM stereo.
Playing Audio Through the Vehicle’s Speakers Frequency Selection Tips For best results, select a frequency below 90.1 FM. When searching for an appropriate FM frequency on your FM stereo, look for an unused frequency that has steady, consistent static. If you hear slight noises and sounds in the background of the static, select a different frequency. As you travel, you might need to change the frequency for the FM transmitter.
Customizing the nüvi Customizing the nüvi 1. Touch Tools > Settings. 2. Touch the setting you want to change. 3. Touch the button beside the setting name to change it. Changing the System Settings Touch Tools > Settings > System. GPS Simulator—turn on the simulator to turn off the GPS mode and simulate navigation and/or to save battery power. Usage Mode—specify how you will be navigating to optimize routes: Automobile, Bicycle, or Pedestrian. Units—change units of measure to Kilometers or Miles.
Customizing the nüvi • Faster Time—to calculate routes that are faster to drive but can be longer in distance. • Shorter Distance—to calculate routes that are shorter in distance but can take more time to drive. • Off Road—to calculate point-topoint routes (without roads). Avoidances—select the road types you want to avoid on your routes. Touch Custom Avoids to avoid a specific area or road. Follow the prompts in the text bar at the top of the screen. To view and edit your custom avoids: 1.
Customizing the nüvi Garmin Lock—turn on Garmin Lock™ to lock your nüvi. Enter a 4-digit PIN, and set a security location. For more information, see page 53. Restore—restore the original security settings. Note that restoring the security settings will not clear your Garmin Lock PIN or Security Location. Updating the Time Settings Touch Tools > Settings > Time. Time Format—select a 12-hour, 24-hour, or UTC time format. Time Zone—select a continent, a country, and a region.
Customizing the nüvi Changing the Map Settings Touch Tools > Settings > Map. Map Detail—adjust the amount of detail shown on the map. Showing more detail can cause the map to redraw slower. Map View—select a map perspective. • Track Up—display the map in two dimensions (2D) with your direction of travel at the top. • North Up—display the map in 2D with North at the top. • 3D View—display the map in three dimensions (3D) in Track Up.
Customizing the nüvi Setting the Bluetooth Technology Options Touch Tools > Settings > Bluetooth. Bluetooth—turn on and off the Bluetooth component. The Bluetooth icon appears on the Menu page if the Bluetooth component is turned on. To prevent a phone from automatically connecting, select Disabled. Phone—select Add > OK to pair with a phone that has Bluetooth wireless technology. See pages 21–26. Select Change to connect with a different phone.
Customizing the nüvi Note: Pre-recorded voices are not able to provide speech recognition prompts. Select a voice that speaks street names to use the speech recognition prompts and to listen to text messages. Keyboard—select the keyboard for your language. You can also change the keyboard language mode from any keyboard by touching the Mode button. Speech Recognition Prompt—turn on or off the questions and prompts while in speech recognition mode.
Customizing the nüvi Note: You do not need to activate the subscription included with your FM traffic receiver (if it came with one). The subscription activates automatically after your nüvi acquires satellite signals while receiving traffic signals from the service provider. 1. From the Menu page, touch Tools > Settings > Traffic. 2. For Non-North American units, touch Subscriptions > Add. For North American units, touch Add. 3. Write down the FM traffic receiver unit ID. 4. Go to www.garmin.
Customizing the nüvi detect the video input when connected to the VIB 10 or VIB 11. Touch Tools > Settings > Proximity Points. Reverse Light Polarity—select High for most vehicles. If your backup camera activates when you are not in reverse, the reverse lights might be sending a low-voltage signal to your nüvi. If this occurs, select Low. Contact the vehicle manufacturer for polarity information. Proximity Alerts—turn on or off the alerts when you approach custom POIs or safety cameras.
Appendix Appendix Caring for Your nüvi Your nüvi contains sensitive electronic components that can be permanently damaged if exposed to excessive shock or vibration. To minimize the risk of damage to your nüvi, avoid dropping your unit and operating it in high-shock and high-vibration environments. Cleaning the Unit The nüvi is constructed of high-quality materials and does not require user maintenance other than cleaning.
Appendix Avoiding Theft • To avoid theft, remove the unit and mount from sight when not in use. Remove the residue left on the windshield by the suction cup. • Do not keep your unit in the glove compartment. • Register your product at http://my.garmin.com. • Use the Garmin Lock feature. See below for more information. Locking Your nüvi Garmin Lock™ is a theft-deterrent system that locks your nüvi. Each time you turn on the nüvi, enter the PIN or drive to the security location. 1.
Appendix Resetting the nüvi If the nüvi stops functioning, turn it off and on again. If the problem persists, slide the Power key to the left and hold it there for a minimum of 8 seconds. The nüvi should operate normally. You can also remove and then reinstall the battery to reset the nüvi. Updating the Software 1. Go to www.garmin.com/products /webupdater and download WebUpdater to your computer. 2. Connect the nüvi to your computer using the mini-USB cable. 3.
Appendix battery and then fully charge it. Do not unplug the nüvi until it is totally charged. You can also use the Suspend/Resume mode to put your nüvi in “sleep” mode and to quickly wake it up. With your nüvi powered on, slide the Power key to the left. Operation is suspended. Slide the Power key to the left again to resume operation. To completely turn off your nüvi, remove the battery.
Appendix Perchlorate Material Replaceable coin cell batteries can contain perchlorate material. Special handling could apply. See www.dtsc .ca.gov/hazardouswaste/perchlorate. Charging Your nüvi • Use the vehicle power cable. • Use the USB cable. • Use an optional AC adapter cable. Changing the Fuse Caution: When replacing the fuse, do not lose any of the small pieces and make sure they are put back in the proper place.
Appendix Mounting on Your Dashboard Use the enclosed ounting disk to mount your unit to the dashboard and comply with certain state regulations. Caution: The permanent mounting adhesive is extremely difficult to remove after it is installed. 1. Clean and dry the dashboard where you are placing the disk. 2. Remove the backing from the adhesive on the bottom of the disk. 3. Place the disk on the dashboard. 4. Remove the clear plastic cover from the top of the disk. 5.

Appendix To delete the Custom POIs from your nüvi, connect your nüvi to your computer. Open the Garmin\poi folder in the nüvi drive or the microSD card drive. Delete the file titled poi.gpi. Appendix Troubleshooting Problem/Question Solution/Answer My nüvi never gets satellite signals. Take your nüvi out of parking garages and away from tall buildings and trees. Remain stationary for several minutes. The suction cup will not Clean the suction cup and windshield with rubbing alcohol. Dry with stay on my windshield. a clean, dry cloth. Mount the suction cup as described on page 2. My nüvi does not charge in my vehicle. Check the fuse in the vehicle power cable.
Appendix Problem/Question Solution/Answer I cannot get traffic information. Verify that you are in a coverage area. You must be in a coverage area to get the traffic information for that area. Verify that the FM TMC Traffic receiver is connected to the power connector on the cradle and also connected to a power outlet in your vehicle. (The traffic receiver is included in some nüvi packages.
Appendix Problem/Question Solution/Answer My computer never senses that the nüvi is connected. 1. Unplug the USB cable from your computer. 2. Turn the nüvi off. 3. Plug the USB cable into a USB port on your computer and into your nüvi. The nüvi automatically turns on and goes into USB mass storage mode. Ensure your nüvi is connected to a USB port and not a USB hub.
