Evolution Series Locomotive by the numbers
Evolution Series Locomotives are the result of a 10-year, $400 million investment by GE.
Its 12-cylinder diesel engine produces the same 4,400 HP as its 16-cylinder predecessor.
• More than 5,000 are operating around the world.
When compared to previous GE Transportation models, the Evolution Series Locomotive uses up
to 5% less fuel during its lifetime or enough to power another Evolution Series Locomotive for
more than half a year.
The Evolution Series Locomotive reduces emissions by more than 40% compared to previous
GE Transportation models.
Each Evolution Series Locomotive has an annual positive GHG emission impact equivalent to
removing 55 cars from the road or planting 75 acres of trees when compared to other heavy-
haul freight locomotives operating today.
One 12-cylinder Evolution Series Locomotive can pull the equivalent of 170 Boeing 747 jetliners.
If every freight train in North America were pulled by an Evolution Series Locomotive, the annual
reduction of smog-producing pollutants would be like removing 48 million cars from the road.
Compared to locomotives manufactured 20 years ago, GE Transportation’s Evolution Series
Locomotive reduces pollution by producing more than 70% fewer particulates and 60% fewer
nitrogen oxide emissions.

Passenger rail
In the 1990s, GE Transportation developed the GENESIS Series Passenger
Locomotive, a lightweight, low-prole and fuel-ecient model used throughout
North America for inter-city and commuter service. With increasing demands
to reduce commute times, emissions and fuel consumption, GE Transportation
has developed the next generation passenger locomotive. This new HSP46
Locomotive uses GE Transportation’s Evolution Series Locomotive technology
and reaches up to 110 miles per hour.
