GE Motors Preferred for High Altitude Applications
Suncor Energy USA, Inc. produces oil, natural gas, wind-generated electricity
and ethanol. Motors are used in a number of their applications producing
outputs of bitumen blends, sweet and sour crude oil, diesel, gasoline, jet fuel
and more. Located in Denver Colorado, Suncor is challenged to meet the high
altitude standards of the area. Since 2010, GE has worked with Suncor to
upgrade low voltage motors to the GE X$D Ultra 841 and 661 products.
After recently receiving a pump platform with a competitor motor, Suncor
would have been forced to rerate the motor to meet the altitude requirements
of the area. Since the motor was only rated at the standard 3200 feet altitude
they were faced with increasing the frame size and adding a new nameplate
for a motor design A (which causes a higher inrush current), Suncor rejected
this option and instead opted for a standard GE Ultra 841 motor.
The required X$D Ultra 841 was in stock and ready to meet Suncor’s
requirements. Since the Ultra 841 already has a lower temperature rise than
the competitor, up-framing was not necessary to meet altitude requirements.
The motor was streamlined through the ModShop process to acquire a space
heater, and was then shipped directly to Suncor Energy.
GE’s ability to provide great, reliable products in stock led Suncor to make the
right decision. The Fast Track ModShop also played a key role in meeting
special requirements in a timely manner.
