How do I configure my router if I am connecting a gaming
console?
I f you want t o connect a gam ing console to your rout er, such as a Microsoft Xbox® or
Sony PlaySt at ion2™, you will have to use open up access to specific ports so t he
devices can com m unicat e wit h the I nt ernet . This is done from t he
Firew all page, using
Por t Triggering.
The rout er com es with a default Port Triggering rule that you will need if you are
connecting a Sony Playst at ion2™ t hat needs to access the I nternet to your rout er. To
enable t he rule, select the On checkbox for the rule. This page also details how you
could creat e your own
PlaySt at ion2™ Port Triggering rule.
N ot e: Opening ports on a router can cause potent ial securit y risks. I n
particular, opening Term inal Services UPnP Port 3389 on Windows XP can allow
I nt ernet hackers t o t ake over your com puter if Windows XP is not pat ched wit h
Microsoft's lat est securit y updat es. I f you are opening ports on your rout er, you
will want to m ake sure you have wireless securit y applied t o the rout er, and you
m ay want t o rest rict the devices that are allowed to connect t o t he rout er to
ensure a secure wireless network.
