Maintenance and Troubleshooting
Engine smokes
Inspect oil level and adjust as needed.
Clean engine cooling fans and carburetor.
Inspect air filter and replace if dirty or damaged.

Engine lacks power or is not
running smoothly.
Refer to the engine owner’s
manual
Verify the choke lever is OPEN.
Air filter may be dirty. Change as necessary.
Spark plug may be dirty or cracked. Change as necessary.
Gas may be old. Change as necessary.
Engine oil may be dirty. Change if necessary.
Verify cooling fins are clean and free of debris. Clean as needed.

Engine runs but the cutting
head won’t move
Throttle should be fully pressed to engage the clutch.
Cutter head drive belt is off the pulleys or broken. Reinstall or charge the belt.
See Replacing Belt.
Verify nothing is wedged or wrapped around the cutter head or pulleys.
Verify the belt has not stretched to the point that it is slipping off the pulleys
Clutch is not working. See Replacing Clutch.
Verify the throttle is moving on the engine.
The engine does not fully
return to low idle when the
throttle is released.
Throttle linkage is sticking. Adjust throttle linkage.
The cutting head is rotating
but the cutting action is
extremely slow and the stump
is showing signs of excessive
heat.
The teeth are dull or damaged. Replace teeth. See Replacing Cutting Teeth
Left-side wheel turns forward
when brake lever is locked or
machine is difficult to push
when brake lever is released.
Brake cable needs adjusting. Adjust cable as needed. See Adjusting Brake.
