General Information and Setup IMPORTANT NOTE: The unit is shipped without oil in engine. Traces of oil may be in reservoir from factory testing. Oil must be added prior to initial operation. Use only the recommended high detergent engine oil. See Engine Fluid Requirements. 1. Place unit on a firm, level surface. Verify engine is cooled. NOTE: The unit is shipped without fuel. Fuel must be added prior to first starting attempt. 1. Place unit on a firm, level surface. Verify engine is cooled. 2.
General Information and Setup 1. See Figure 2-12. Remove valve stem protective cap (A) and check tire pressure using a tire pressure gauge. High Altitude Replacement Kit The standard carburetor air-fuel mixture is too rich at high altitudes for this unit. Performance decreases and fuel consumption increases. A rich mixture also fouls the spark plug and causes hard starting. Operation for extended periods of time at an altitude that differs from what the engine was certified for may increase emissions.

Operation 2. See Figure 3-2. Set fuel shutoff valve (A) to open. WARNING Personal injury. Do not operate the unit with the hopper or discharge chute removed. Doing so could cause death, serious injury, property or equipment damage. (000513a) WARNING C B A 006493 Equipment damage. Do not overload unit or attempt to chip/shred material beyond the manufacturer’s recommendation. Doing so could result in death, severe injury, or equipment damage. (000515) Figure 3-2. Engine Controls 3.
Operation • Verify all material in hopper is processed before shutting off engine. • Trim off side twigs before chipping. • Rotate branches while feeding into unit to improve performance and reduce chance of a tail. • Green wood processes easier than dry wood. • Softwood processes easier than hardwood. WARNING Personal injury. Securely fasten chipper hopper to unit prior to use. Failure to do so could result in serious injury, property or equipment damage.
Operation Shredder Hopper • Feed limited quantities of material into shredder hopper. Increase quantity as suitable. Decrease quantity if engine speed decreases. This amount will vary based on material being shredded. DANGER Personal injury. NEVER attempt to dislodge debris from discharge chute or hopper while unit is running. The cutting blades can start again at any moment, which will result in death, serious injury, or equipment damage.
Operation WARNING Accidental start-up. Before servicing or detangling, shut down unit, allow to cool, remove keys, and disconnect spark plug wire(s). Failure to do so could result in death, serious injury, or equipment damage. (000415) 1. See Figure 3-3. Remove hair cotter pin (A) at end of baffle retaining rod, and remove baffle retaining rod. Maintenance and Troubleshooting Changing Engine Oil 7. Attach the spark plug wire. Changing Air Filter WARNING Accidental start-up. Before servicing or detangling, shut down unit, allow to cool, remove keys, and disconnect spark plug wire(s). Failure to do so could result in death, serious injury, or equipment damage. (000415) WARNING Risk of fire. Never operate engine without the air cleaner installed. Operating engine without the air cleaner could result in death or serious injury.
Maintenance and Troubleshooting the inside. Never attempt to brush off dirt; brushing will force dirt into fibers. b. Foam air filter element: Clean in warm soapy water, rinse, and air dry thoroughly. Or, clean in nonflammable solvent and air dry thoroughly. Dip filter element in clean engine oil, and remove excess oil. Engine will smoke when started if too much oil remains in the foam air filter element. 4. See Figure 4-4. Measure spark plug electrode gap (C) with a suitable gauge. The gap should be 0.
Maintenance and Troubleshooting B A 006495 006466 Figure 4-7. Belt Tension Figure 4-5. Side Bearing Grease Fitting 2. See Drive Belt Maintenance. Remove the belt guard to access the drive side bearing. 3. Apply three pumps or fewer of quality general-purpose lithium grease with a hand-pumped grease gun to each grease fitting. 4. Inspect the side bearing collar set screws (B) for tightness. There are two set screws for each side bearing. Reset them with medium strength threadlocker if loose. 5.
Maintenance and Troubleshooting Chipper Knife Sharpening WARNING Accidental start-up. Before servicing or detangling, shut down unit, allow to cool, remove keys, and disconnect spark plug wire(s). Failure to do so could result in death, serious injury, or equipment damage. (000415) Knife sharpening should only be done by an IASD. The following points must be considered: • A 45° angle must be maintained for proper perfor006510 Figure 4-9. Belt Alignment Check mance.

Maintenance and Troubleshooting 4. Clean engine crankshaft and remove any burrs. Apply anti-seize compound to crankshaft. WARNING Personal injury and equipment damage. Do not tamper with engine governed speed. Operating engine too fast or slow increases the risk of injury or permanent engine damage. (000254) 5. Install key in keyway of new clutch hub, align key with slot in engine crankshaft, and slide new clutch assembly onto shaft. 6. Secure clutch with washer, lock washer, and clutch bolt. 7.
Maintenance and Troubleshooting Follow the recommendations below for battery’s best performance. • Inspect chipper knife, hammers, and wear plate for • Do not allow battery to discharge completely or • Remove any debris wrapped around hammer rotor. • Remove spark plug and add 1 oz (29.6 mL) of excessively. Charge battery every 4–6 weeks if unit is not being used. Operate engine for at least 45 minutes to maintain proper battery charge. • Store unused batteries in a dry area that does not freeze.
Maintenance and Troubleshooting Troubleshooting WARNING Accidental start-up. Before servicing or detangling, shut down unit, allow to cool, remove keys, and disconnect spark plug wire(s). Failure to do so could result in death, serious injury, or equipment damage. (000415) Symptom WARNING Risk of Burn. Allow the engine to cool before performing the following procedure. Failure to do so could result in serious injury. (000560) Possible Cause Verify correct startup procedure. See Starting the Unit.
Maintenance and Troubleshooting Symptom Possible Cause Verify throttle lever is in FAST position to engage clutch. Verify drive belt is correctly installed, undamaged, and correctly tensioned. Engine runs, but flywheel doesn’t rotate Inspect for debris in chipper/shredder hopper inlets and discharge chute. Clean as necessary. Inspect inner shoes of clutch and clutch shoe retaining springs for wear or damage. Replace clutch if damaged. Engine speed too slow. Inspect belt for slippage.
