Rev. 12/2013
STEP 1.
On existing roofs, remove cap shingles. After
installing a peak ridge vent, mark slot width at both
ends of hip ridge. Use slot guides imprinted on Hip
Ridge Vent and refer to drawings above. Snap chalk
line on both sides of hip ridge.
Cut slot(s) (plumb cut, if possible).
Note: Adjust depth of blade to avoid cutting rafters
or trusses. Refer to Fig. 1 on front page for slot
dimensions. Remove debris from slot(s).
SEE IMPORTANT WARNING ABOVE.
STEP 2.
STEP 4.
STEP 5.
STEP 6.
Fasten the first Hip Ridge Vent section closest to
the edge of the roof over at least two installed cap
shingles. Make sure the support ribs and gaskets are
flat on the roof and the filter is secure between the
shingles and the vent. Continue fastening subsequent
vent sections up the hip ridge, ensuring solid decking
is underneath all joints.
IMPORTANT NOTES FOR HIP RIDGE INSTALLATION:
1. Important: See instructions below for cutting slot as they differ from peak ridge installations.
2. When applying Hip Ridge Vent to shakes, fold felt to seal off seams between shakes.
3. Before fastening Hip Ridge Vent, make sure filter is secured between shingles and vent.
4. When installing Hip Ridge Vent in cold weather, leave a 1/8” gap between Hip Ridge Vent sections to allow for expansion in hot weather.
5. For best appearance, run Hip Ridge Vent from ridge to eave to give the roof a more even, attractive appearance.
6. It is recommended that when used in conjunction with The Edge™ Vent for intake airflow, the Hip Ridge Vent should not be installed directly over it.
7. When using a nail gun to install cap shingles over Hip Ridge Vent, special care should be taken. It is important that the roofing nails penetrate the
roof deck without compressing the vent. Nails driven too deep may dimple or distort the cap shingles. Nails not driven deep enough may
allow vent fasteners to back out of the roof deck and could result in blow-offs.
Use a utility knife to cut final section to length.
The final section should be oriented so that the
integrated end plug is pointing toward the eave
of the roof and the miter cuts fit flush with the end
of the peak ridge vent. Use the embossed center
alignment line of the Hip Ridge Vent to ensure the
vent lines up with the peak ridge vent by making
sure they are able to touch. Fasten final section.
Nail cap shingles in place using roofing nails long
enough to fully penetrate roof sheathing. Use nailing
lines provided on Hip Ridge Vent as a guide. If using
a nail gun, see note 7 under “Important Notes.” If you
choose to use cap shingles to transition from the top
of the vent sections to the roof decking for a smooth
appearance, make sure only shingle-factory manufac-
tured cap shingles are used. Three tab shingles cut to
cap shingle size should be avoided.
WARNING: The jack rafter spacing on the hip rafter is wider than the nominal jack rafter spacing, which can leave large spans of decking
unsupported on certain pitch roofs. Caution should be exercised when maneuvering to cut the slot and install the Hip Ridge Vent if no supplementary
blocking is installed beneath the slot decking.
† - Sealant is required to fill joints between shake shingles to prevent leakage. See diagram for more details.
- A minimum of two cap shingles are required under the bottom of the lower most Hip Ridge Vent installed to provide a finished look.

STEP 3.
Install cap shingles at the base of the hip ridge to be
underneath the lowermost section of Hip Ridge Vent.
This ensures the end of the run facing the eave is
aesthetically finished and weather tight.
