Operation
Closed Captions
Closed captioning isa process whichconverts the audioportion
of a television program into written words which then appear as
subtitles on thetelevision screen. Closedcaptions allow viewers
to read thedialogue and narrationof television programs.
Using Closed Captions
Captions are thesubtitles of thedialogue and narrationof television
programs. For prerecorded programs, program dialogue
can be arranged into captions in advance. Its possibleto caption
a live program by using aprocess called real-timecaptioning,
which creates captionsinstantly. Real-time captioning isnormally
done by professionalreporters using amachine shorthand
system and computerfor translation intoEnglish.
Captioning is an effective system for the hearing-impaired,
and it canalso aid inteaching language skills.
CC mode
1. Press theMENU button and thenuseA/Y button to selectthe
Function menu.
2. Press the&/Y button to select theCC mode.
3. Press the_" button and thenuseA/Ybutton toselectthe items:
(On, Off or On When mute.)
4. When youaresatisfied with yourchoice, press MENU button to return to
the previous menuor press theEXIT button to returnto TVviewing.
Note: Thecaptions do not always use
correct spelling andgrammar. Notall
TV programs andproduct commercials
are made for Droaacast with Closed
Caption information included. Refer to
your area sTV program listingsfor theTV
channels and times of Closed Caption
shows. The captlonea programs are
usually, noted in the TV listinc s with service
marks such as "CC"
NTSC Caption
This allows you to configure the way you choose to view the digital
captioning.
1. Press the MENU button and then use A/Y button to selectthe
Function menu.
2. Press thel_ button and thenuseA/Y button to selectNTSC Caption.
3. Press thel_ button and thenuseA/Y button toselectcaption:ccl,cc2,
CC3, CC4, Text1, Text2, Text3, or Te×t4.
4. When you aresatisfiedwith yourchoice, press MENU button to returnto
the previous menuor press theEXIT button to returnto TVviewing.
[] CAPTION
The term forthe words thatscroll across thebottom of theTV screen; usually
the audio portionof the programprovided for thehearing impaired.
[] TEXT
The term forthe words thatappear in alarge black frameand almost cover
the entire screen; usually messages provided by the broadcaster.
DTV Caption(in DTVmode)
This allows youto configure theway you chooseto view thedigital
captioning.
Select one ofthe digital servicechannels made available by the caption
provider.
There are 6standard services. Service 1 is designated as the Primary
Caption Service. This service containsthe verbatim, ornear-verbatim
captions for theprimary language beingspoken in theaccompanying
program audio.
Service 2 isdesignated as theSecondary Language Service. This service
contains captions ina secondary languagewhich are translationsof the
captions in the primary Caption Service. The other service subchannels are
not pre-assigned. Iris up tothe discretion ofthe individual caption provider
to utilize theremaining service channels.
