System Configuration
NOTE:If youchooseLogic7 asthe sur-
round modefor the particularinput source
for whichyou are configuringyourspeakers,
theAVR 120will not makethe LARGE
option availablefor the centerspeaker.This
is dueto the requirementsof Logic7 pro-
cessing,and doesnot indicatea problemwith
yourreceiver.
When CE N N 0 N E is selected,nosignals
will be sentto the center-channeloutput.
7.Whenyou havecompletedyour selectionfor
the centerchannel,pressthe Set Button
_, and then pressthe _/I_ Buttons
_ onthe remoteorthe Selector
Buttons [] onthe front panelto change
the displayto SU R S PE AK ER.
8. Pressthe Set Button li_W again,and
then usethe A/V Buttons I[_DII_I onthe
remoteorthe Selector Buttons [] onthe
front panelto selectthe option that best
describesyoursystembasedon the speaker
definitionsshown in the precedingsection.
When SU R S MA L L isselected,low-
frequencysurround-channelsoundswill be
sentto the subwooferoutput only.Notethat
if youchoosethis option andthere is no
subwooferconnected,you will not hearany
low-frequencysoundsfromthe surround
speaker.
When SUR LARGE isselected,a full-
rangeoutput will besentto the surround-
channeloutputs,and NOsurround-channel
signalswill besentto the subwooferoutput.
When SUR NONE is selected,surround
soundinformationwill besplit betweenthe
front-left and front-fight outputs.Note that
for optimalperformancewhen nosurround
speakersare in use,the Dolby3 Stereo
modeshouldbe usedinsteadof DolbyPro
LogicII.
9.Whenyou havecompletedyour selectionfor
the surroundchannel,pressthe Set Button
li]_m, andthen pressA/V Buttons
Ii_DII_I onthe remoteor the Selector
Buttons [] onthe front panelto change
the displayto S - W SP EA KER.
10.Pressthe Set Button I[1_ W, and then
pressthe A/V Buttons I_)Ii_I onthe
remoteor the Selector Buttons [] on the
front panelto selectthe option that best
describesyour system.
Thechoicesavailablefor the subwooferposition
will dependonthe settingsfor the other speak-
ers,particularlythe front left/right positions.
If the front left/right speakersare setto
S I'1AL L, the subwooferwill automaticallybe
setto SUB, which isthe "on" position.
If the front left/right speakersare setto
L ARGE, threeoptions areavailable:
If no subwooferisconnectedto the
AVR120,pressthe A/V Buttons I[_tli_I
onthe remotesothat SU B N ONE
appearsin the Main Information Display
I-i1.Whenthis option is selected,all bass
informationwill beroutedto thefront
left/right "main" speakers.
If a subwooferis connectedto the AVR120,
youhavethe option to havethefront
left/right "main" speakersreproducebass
frequenciesat all times,and havethe sub-
wooferoperateonly whenthe AVR120is
beingusedwith a digital sourcethat con-
tainsa dedicatedLow-FrequencyEffects,or
LFE,soundtrack.Thisallowsyouto use both
yourmain andsubwooferspeakersto take
advantageof the specialbasscreatedfor
certainmovies.PressA/_I' Buttons

If a subwooferis connectedand you wish
to useit for bassreproductionin conjunc-
tion with the main front left/right speakers,
regardlessof the typeof programsourceor
surroundmodeyou are listeningto, press
the A/V Buttons I[_)Ii_I on the remote
sothat SU B L / R+ L FE appearsin the
Main Information DisplayI-ii. Whenthis
optionis selected,a "complete" feedwill
besentto the front left/right "main" speak-
ers,andthe subwooferwill receivebassfre-
quenciesbelow 100Hz.
11.Whenall speakerselectionshavebeen
made,pressthe Set Button li:l_ m to
returnto normaloperation.
Output LevelAdjustment
Outputleveladjustmentis a keypart of the
configurationprocessfor anysurroundsound
product.It isparticularlyimportantfor a Dolby
Digitalreceiversuchasthe AVR120,as correct
output levelswill ensurethat you hearsound
tracks intheir properplacewith the proper
directionalityand intensity.
IMPORTANTNOTE:Listenersare oftencon-
fused aboutthe operationof the surround
channels.Whilesomeassumethat sound
shouldalwaysbe comingfrom eachspeaker,
mostof the timethere will be little or no sound
in the surroundchannels.Thisisbecausethey
areonly usedwhena moviedirectoror sound
mixerspecificallyplacessoundthereto create
ambiance,a specialeffect orto continueaction
from the front of the roomto the rear.When
the output levelsare properlyset,it is normal
for surroundspeakersto operateonlyoccasion-
ally.Artificiallyincreasingthe volumeto the rear
speakersmaydestroythe illusion of an envelop-
ing soundfield that duplicatesthe wayyou
hearsoundin a movietheateror concerthall.
Beforebeginningthe adjustmentprocess,make
certainthat all speakerconnectionshavebeen
properlymade.Thesystemvolumeshouldbe
setto the levelthat you will useduringa typi-
callisteningsession.Finally,makecertainthat
the Balance Control [] is setto the center
"12 o'clock" position.
Toassistin makingspeakerconfigurationset-
tings,the iconsinthe Speaker/Channel
Input Indicators [] changeas the speaker
type is selectedat eachposition.When only the
centericonboxcontainingthe abbreviationfor
the speakerposition is lit, the speakerissetfor
"small." Whenthe inner box andthe two outer
boxesare lit, the speakeris setfor "large."
Whenno indicatorappearsat a speakerloca-
tion, that position isset for "none" or "no"
speaker.
Forexample,in thefollowing figure,the left
front and right front speakersareset for
"large," the center,surroundleft (SL)and sur-
round right (SR)speakersareset for small,and
a subwooferisset,asshown bythe boxwith
the abbreviation"LFE",which standsfor "low-
frequencyeffects."
