andhavethesubwooferoperateonlywhenthe
AVR125 isbeingusedwitha digitalsourcethat
containsa dedicatedLow-FrequencyEffects,or
LFE,soundtrack.Thisallowsyouto usebothyour
mainandsubwooferspeakersto takeadvantage
of thespecialbasscreatedforcertainmovies.

willreceivebassfrequenciesbelowlOOHz.

Configuringthe SurroundOff
(Stereo)Modes
Forsuperiorreproductionof two-channelprogram
materials,theAVR125 offerstwoStereomodes:an
analogStereo-Directmodethatbypassesthedigital
signalprocessingcircuitryfora completelyanalogsig-
nalpaththatpreservesthepurityof theoriginalsignal,
anda digitalmodethatiscapableof providingbass
managementfor optimaldistributionof thelowfre-
quenciesbetweensmallerspeakersanda subwoofer.
Stereo-Direct(Bypass)Mode
WhentheanalogStereo-Directmodeisselectedby
pressingtheSurroundModeSelectorI_1_ until
SURROUND OFF- STEREO scrolls
acrosstheMain InformationDisplay[] andthe
SurroundModeIndicator [] for %rroundOffis lit,
theAVR125 willpasstheanalogsourcematerial
directlythroughto thefrontleftandrightspeakers,
bypassingthedigitalprocessingcircuitry.
Inthismode,thefrontleftandrightspeakerswillauto-
maticallybe configuredasLARGE, anditwillnotbe
possibleto configurethesespeakersasS MA L L
Youmayconfigurethesubwooferas 0 N or 0 F F
bypressingtheSpeakerSelectButton[]
untilS - W SP KR appearsintheMainInformation
Display[]. PresstheA/V Buttonsqi_)_ or
theSelectorButtons[] to selectthedesired
option,andtheSetButtonF:i"l_ to enterthe
selection.
Stereo-DigitalMode
Ifyourfrontleftandrightspeakersarenotcapableof
handlingafull-rangeinput,youmaypreferto take
advantageof theAVR125'sbassmanagementcapa-
bility.WhenlisteningintheStereomode,pressthe
SurroundModeSelector_i_ untilS UR -
R0 UND 0 F F - A / D M0 D E scrollsacross
theMain InformationDisplay[], theSurround
ModeIndicator [] for SurroundOffis litandboth
theStereoIndicator[] andtheDSPMode
Indicator[] arelit.Inthismode,theanaloginputwill
beconvertedto digitalandroutedtothedigitalsignal
processorfor bassmanagementprocessingbeforeit
isconvertedbackto analogandoutputto thefront
leftandrightspeakers.
Toconfigureyourfrontleftandrightspeakersinthis
mode,presstheSpeakerSelectButton[]_
untilFN T SP KR appearsintheMainInformation
Display[], andthenpresstheSet ButtonF:i"l_.
PresstheA/V Buttonsqi_)_ or theSelector
Buttons[] untileitherL A RGE or S MA L L
appears,matchingthetypeof speakersyouhaveat
thefront-leftandfront-rightpositions,asdescribed
on page17.
WhenSMAL L is selected,low-frequencysounds
willbesenttothesubwooferoutputonly,andthesub-
wooferspeakerwillautomaticallybeconfiguredas
0 N. Ifyouchoosethe SMAL L configurationand
thereisnosubwooferconnected,youwillnothearany
low-frequencysounds.
WhenL A RGE is selected,afull-rangeoutputwill
besentto thefront-leftandfront-rightspeakers,and
NOlow-frequencysignalswillbesenttothesub-
wooferoutput.
Output Level Adjustment
Outputleveladjustmentisa keypartof theconfigura-
tionprocessforanysurroundsoundproduct.It is par-
ticularlyimportantfora DolbyDigitalreceiversuchas
theAVR125, ascorrectoutputlevelswillensurethat
youhearsoundtracksintheirproperplacewiththe
properdirectionalityandintensity.
IMPORTANTNOTE:Listenersareoftenconfused
abouttheoperationof thesurroundchannels.While
someassumethatsoundshouldalwaysbecoming
fromeachspeaker,mostofthetimetherewillbelittle
orno soundinthesurroundchannels.Thisis because
theyareonlyusedwhena moviedirectoror sound
mixerspecificallyplacessoundthereto create
ambience,a specialeffectorto continueactionfrom
thefrontof theroomto therear.Whentheoutputlev-
elsareproperlyset,it isnormalfor surroundspeakers
to operateonlyoccasionally.Artificiallyincreasingthe
volumeto therearspeakersmaydestroytheillusion
of anenvelopingsoundfieldthatduplicatestheway
youhearsoundina movietheaterorconcerthall.
Beforebeginningtheadjustmentprocess,makecer-
tainthatallspeakerconnectionshavebeenproperly
made.Thesystemvolumeshouldbesetto thelevel
thatyouwilluseduringa typicallisteningsession.
Finally,makecertainthattheBalanceControl[] is
setto thecenter"12 o'clock"position.
Toassistinmakingspeakerconfigurationsettings,the
iconsintheSpeaker/ChannelInput Indicators[]
changeasthespeakertypeisselectedat eachposi-
tion.Whenonlythecentericonboxcontainingthe
abbreviationforthespeakerpositionislit,thespeaker
issetfor "sma['Whentheinnerboxandthetwo
outerboxesarelit,thespeakerissetfor"large."When
noindicatorappearsata speakerlocation,thatposi-
tionis setfor "none"or"no"speaker.
Forexample,inthefollowingfigure,theleftfrontand
rightfrontspeakersaresetfor "large,"thecenter,sur-
roundleft(SL)andsurroundright(SR)speakersare
setforsmall,anda subwooferis set,asshownbythe
boxwiththeabbreviation"LFE",whichstandsfor"low-
frequencyeffects,"

Toadjustandcalibratetheoutputlevels,followthese
steps.Foraccuratecalibration,it isa goodideato
maketheseadjustmentswhileseatedinyourfavorite
listeningposition:
