Remote Control Functions
IMPORTANTNOTE:TheAVR220'sremote
maybeprogrammedto controlup to eight
devices,includingthe AVR220. Beforeusingthe
remote,it is importantto rememberto pressthe
Input Selector Button O that corresponds
to the unityouwishto operate.Inaddition,the
AVR220's remoteisshippedfromthe factoryto
operatetheAVR220 andmost HarmanKardon
CDor DVDplayersandcassettedecks.The
remoteis also capableof operatinga wide vari-
ety of otherproductsusingthe controlcodes
that are part of the remote.Beforeusingthe
remotewith otherproducts,follow the instruc-
tionson pages33-36 to programthe proper
codesfor the productsin yoursystem.
It is alsoimportantto rememberthat manyof
the buttonson the remotetakeon different
functions,dependingonthe productselected
usingthe DeviceControlSelectors.Thedescrip-
tionsshownhereprimarilydetailthe functions
of the remotewhen it is usedto operatethe
AVR220. (Seepage34 for informationabout
alternatefunctionsfor the remote'sbuttons.)
O Power Off Button: Pressingthis button
turnsoff (placesinthe Standbymode)thedevice
that waslastselectedbypressingoneofthe
Input Selectorsq_l. ToplacetheAVR220 in
the Standbymode,firstpressthe AVRSelector
Button _ andthen pressthis button.
IRTransmitter Window: Pointthis win-
dow towardstheAVR220 whenpressingbuttons
onthe remoteto makecertainthat infraredcom-
mandsare properlyreceived.
Program/SPLIndicator:Thisthree-color
indicatorisusedto guideyou throughthe
processof programmingthe remoteand it is
alsousedasa levelindicatorwhenusingthe
remote'sEzSetcapabilities.(Seepage21for
moreinformationon settingoutput levels,and
seepage 33for informationon programming
the remote.)
O Power On Button: Pressthisbutton
to turn onpowerto the devicethat waslast
selectedbypressingoneof theInput Selectors
_. Toturn ontheAVR220,presstheAVR
SelectorButtonO.
Input Selectors: Pressingoneof these
buttonswill performthreeactionsat the same
time. First,if the AVR220 is not turnedon, this
will powerupthe unit. Next,it will selectthe
sourceshownon the button asthe inputto the
AVR220. Finally,it will changethe remotecon-
trol so that it controlsthe deviceselected.After
pressingone of thesebuttonsyoumust press
the AVR Selector Button _ againto oper-
ate theAVR220'sfunctionswith the remote.
AVR Selector: Pressingthisbuttonwill
switchthe remotesothat it will operatethe
AVR220'sfunctions.If theAVR220 is inthe
Standbymode,it will alsoturn theAVR220on.
qi_ AM/FM TunerSelect: Pressthis button to
selecttheAVR220'stuner asthe listening
choice.Pressingthis button whenthe tuner is
alreadyin usewill switchbetweenthe AM and
FMbands.
TestButton: Pressthis buttonto begin
the sequenceusedto calibratetheAVR220's
output levels.(Seepage21for moreinformation
oncalibratingtheAVR220.)
Sleep Button: Pressthis button to place
the unit in the Sleepmode.Afterthe time
shownin the display,the AVR220 will auto-
maticallygo into the Standbymode.Eachpress
of the button changesthe time untilturn-off in
the following order:

Notethat this button is also usedto change
channelson yourTVwhentheTV isselected.
Thisbuttonisalsousedto endthe processof
creatinga macrocommand.(Seepage34for

l_)Surround Mode Selector: Pressthis
button to begin the process of changing
the surround mode. After the button has
been pressed, usethe AIr Buttons
l[_l_ to selectthe desiredsurroundmode.

this button isalsousedto tune channelswhen
theTV is selectedusingthe device Input
Selector _. Thisbutton is also usedin part
of the processof erasestoredmacrocom-
mands.(Seepage34for moreinformationon
macros.)
NOTE:TheSleep Button _ and Surround
Mode SelectorI_) mayalsofunctionas the
Channel+ and - keyswhenthe remoteispro-
grammedfor usewith TVs,cableboxes,VCRs,
satellitereceiversor other videodeviceswith
tuners.Seepage35for informationon pro-
grammingthe remotefor ChannelControl
Punch-Throughcapabilityso that you may
changechannelson a separatedevicewhen
the remoteis in AVRmode.
Night Mode: Pressthis button to activate
the Night mode.Thismodeis availablein spe-
ciallyencodeddigitalsources,andit preserves
dialog (centerchannel)intelligibilityat low
volumelevels.
Channel Select Button:Thisbuttonis
usedto startthe processof settingtheAVR220's
outputlevelsto anexternalsource.Oncethis but-
ton is pressed,usethe AIr Buttonsl[_l_
to selectthechannelbeingadjusted,then press
theSet Button qi_, followedbythe AIr
Buttons _ again,to changethelevelset-
ting.(Seepage29 for moreinformation.)
A Button: Thismultipurposebutton is
usedto changeorscrollthroughitemsin theon
screenmenus,or to changeconfigurationset-
tingssuchasoutputlevels.Whenchangingan
itemsuchasthe surroundmodeor digitalinput
directly,first pressthefunctionor modeto be
changed(e.g.pressthe SurroundMode
Selector _ to selecta surroundmodeor the
Digital Select Button @ to changethe digi-
tal input)and then pressthis buttonto scroll
throughthe listof availablechoices.
• Button:Thisbutton isusedto change
the menuselectionor settingduringsomeof
the setupproceduresfor the AVR220.
Set Button:Thisbutton is usedto enter
settingsintothe AVR220's memory.It is also
usedin the setupproceduresfor delaytime,
speakerconfigurationand channeloutput level
adjustment.
Digital Select:Pressthis button to assign
one ofthe digital inputs'@,,J_3i"1_]i'1_lJto a
source.(Seepage26 for moreinformation on
usingdigital inputs.)
