System Configuration
It is easiestto enterthe propersettingsfor the
speakersetupthroughthe SPEAKER
SETUP menu(Figure5). If that menuis not
alreadyon yourscreenfromthe prioradjust-
ments,pressthe OSDButton _ to bringup
the MASTER MENU (Figure1),and then
pressthe • Button _ twice so that the cur-
soris on the SPEAKER SETUP line.At
this point,pressthe Set Button _ to bring
upthe SPEAKER SETUP menu
(Figure5).

Whenthe SPEAKER SETUP menufirst
appears,the on-screencursor• will beatthe
top of the listof speakerpositions,pointing
towardthe LEFT/RIGHT line,whichsets
theconfigurationfor thefront left and right
speakers.If youwishto makea changetothe
frontspeakers'configuration,pressthe 4/•
Buttons _ _ sothat either L A R GE or
SMA L L appears,matchingthe appropriate
descriptionfromthedefinitionsshownabove.
WhenSMA L L isselected,low-frequency
soundsbelow lOOHzwill be sentonly to the
subwooferoutput.Notethat if youchoosethis
optionandthereisnosubwooferconnected,you
will not hearanylow-frequencysoundsbelow
lOOHzfromthefront channels.
WhenL AR GE is selected,a full-rangeoutput
will be sentto the front left andfront right
outputs.Dependingonthechoicemadein
the SUBWOOFER line inthis menu,bass
informationmayalsobe directedto thefront
left/rightspeakers,a subwooferor both.
Whenyouhavecompletedyour selectionfor the
frontchannel,pressthe • Button _ onthe
remoteto movethecursorto CENTER.
Pressthe 4/• Buttons _ _ on the remote
to selectthe optionthat bestdescribesyour
systembasedonthe speakerdefinitionsshown
below.
WhenSMALL isselected,low-frequency
center-channelsoundsbelow lOOHzwill be sent
onlyto thesubwooferoutput. Notethat if you
choosethis optionandthereis nosubwoofer
connected,you will not hearanylow-frequency
soundsfrom thecenter-channelspeaker.
WhenLARGE isselected,a full-rangeoutput
will be sentto the centerspeakeroutput, and
NOcenter-channelsignalwill besentto the
subwooferoutput.
NOTE:If youchooseLogic7 asthe surround
modefor the particularinput sourcefor which
youare configuringyourspeakers,the AVR220
will not makethe LARGEoption availablefor
the centerspeaker.Thisisdue to the require-
mentsof Logic7 processing,anddoesnot indi-
catea problemwith your receiver.
WhenNONE is selected,nosignalswill be
sentto the center-channeloutput. Thereceiver
will operatein a "phantom" center-channel
modeand center-channelinformationwill
besentto the left and rightfront-channel
outputs. Whenonly front left and right speak-
ersare used,with nocenteror surroundspeak-
ers,VMAxisa good alternativemode.
Whenyou havecompletedyourselectionfor
the centerchannel,pressthe • Button
onthe remoteto changethe cursorto
SURROUND.
Pressthe 4/• Buttons _ _ on the remote
to selecttheoptionthat bestdescribesthe sur-
roundspeakersin yoursystembasedonthe
speakerdefinitionsshownonthis page.
WhenSMAL L is selected,low-frequency
surround-channelsoundsbelow lOOHzwill be
sentto the subwooferoutput only.Notethat if
youchoosethis option andthere isnosub-
wooferconnected,youwill not hearany low-
frequencysoundsfrom the surroundspeakers.
WhenLARGE isselected,a full-rangeoutput
will besentto the surround-channeloutputs,
and NOsurround-channelsignalswill besent
to the subwooferoutput.
WhenN0 NE is selected,surround-sound
informationwill besplit betweenthe front left
and right outputs.Notethat for optimal per-
formancewhenno surroundspeakersare in
use,the Dolby3 Stereomodeshouldbe used
insteadof DolbyProLogicII.If onlyfront left
and right speakersareavailable,selectoneof
thetwo VMAx modesor "SurroundOff".
Whenyouhavecompletedyourselectionfor the
surroundchannel,pressthe • Button _ on
the remoteto movethecursorto SUBWOOFER.
Pressthe 4/• Buttons _ onthe
remoteto selectthe option that bestdescribes
yoursystem.
Thechoicesavailablefor the subwoofer
positionwill dependonthe settingsfor the
otherspeakers,particularlythe front left/right
positions.
If the front left/right speakersare setto
SMAL L, the subwooferwill automaticallybe
setto SUB, which isthe "on" position.
If the front left/right speakersare setto
L A RGE, three optionsare available:
If no subwooferis connectedto the
AVR220, pressthe _/• Buttons qi_)_
onthe remotesothat NONE appearsin
the on-screenmenu.Whenthis option is
selected,all bassinformationwill berouted
to the front left/right "main" speakers.
If a subwooferisconnectedto theAVR220,
youhavethe optionto havethe front
left/right "main" speakersreproducebass
frequenciesat all times,and havethe sub-
wooferoperateonly whenthe AVR220 is
being usedwith a digital sourcethat con-
tainsa dedicatedLow-FrequencyEffects,or
LFE,soundtrack.Thisallowsyouto useboth
your mainand subwooferspeakersto take
advantageof the specialbasscreatedfor
certainmovies.Pressthe _/• Buttons
li_]t_ onthe remotesothat SUB
( LFE ) appearsin the on-screenmenu.
If a subwooferisconnectedandyou wishto
useit for bassreproductionin conjunction
with the mainfront left/right speakers,
regardlessof the type of programsourceor
surroundmodeyouare listeningto, press
the _/• Buttons li_)_ onthe remote
sothatSUB L/R+LFE appearsin
the on-screenmenu.Whenthis option is
selected,a "complete"feed will besentto
the front left/right "main" speakers,andthe
subwooferwill receivebassfrequencies
below lOOHz.
