Flo
Monitor Arm
Design Story: Taking monitor arms in a
new direction
The Flo monitor arm was designed by Peter Bosson of
Colebrook Bosson Saunders, a Herman Miller company.
Flo allows a flat screen to be used in either an upright
viewing position, at desktop level as a touch screen, or
anywhere in between. The constant objective throughout
the design process was to keep the shape, surfaces,
and joints as simple and pure as they could possibly
be. Through ingenious design, Flo offers maximum
performance with the minimum number of parts. The
exterior is of equally pure design with clean surfaces,
few visible parts, and a minimalist, streamlined
appearance.
Herman Miller’s Design Protocol
Our commitment to corporate sustainability naturally
includes minimizing the environmental impact of each
of our products. Our Design for Environment team (DfE)
applies environmentally sensitive design standards to
both new and existing Herman Miller products.
The DfE Design Protocol goes beyond regulatory
compliance to thoroughly evaluate new product
designs in four key areas:
Material Chemistry and Safety of Inputs
What chemicals are in the materials we specify, and
are they the safest available?
Disassembly—Can we take products apart at the
end of their useful life, to recycle their materials?
Recyclability—Do the materials contain recycled
content, and more importantly, can the materials be
recycled at the end of the product’s useful life?
LCA—Have we optimized the product based on the
entire life cycle?
Material Content
Flo’s components are constructed from steel, aluminum,
plastic, and zinc.
Flo is 99 percent recyclable at the end of its useful life.
Flo is comprised of 43-percent recycled materials. This
figure breaks down to 23-percent post-consumer and
20-percent pre-consumer recycled content.
Steel components contain approximately 13 percent
recycled content and are 100 percent recyclable.
Aluminum components contain 95% recycled content
and are 100 percent recyclable.
Most metal components have a powder-coat paint
finish that emits negligible volatile organic compounds
(VOCs).
Returnable Packaging—Packaging materials for
Flo monitor arms include corrugated cardboard and
polyethylene stretch wrap. These materials are part of
a closed-loop recycling system, meaning they can be
recycled repeatedly.
