INSTALLATION - COMBUSTIBLE CONSTRUCTION
CLEARANCES
TO COMBUSTIBLE CONSTRUCTION
This appliance should NOT be installed over, under or next to unprotected combustible
construction. If your enclosure (island) is combustible, then an insulated jacket manufactured by
Hestan, is required. See INSULATION JACKET dimensions on the next page to make allowances in
your enclosure for this item.
A minimum clearance to combustible materials, such as adjacent walls, is 12” [30 cm] on the sides
and the rear of the appliance, BELOW the countertop surface.
A minimum clearance to combustible materials, such as adjacent walls, is 12” [30 cm] on the sides
and the rear of the appliance, ABOVE the countertop surface.
If the rear wall is made of non-combustible materials, the rear clearance can be a minimum of 4”
[10 cm] clearance from the back of the grill to allow the hood to be opened fully.
If the rear wall is made of combustible materials, see the warning below.
Note: The diagrams on the following page show a typical 30” [76.2 cm] deep island, which result in the 4.75”
[12.1 cm] reference dimension, and the 5.25” [13.3 cm] dimension at the back of the grill when installed.
Adjacent walls must be made of non-combustible materials . As an example, if you have an island
with a stucco or tiled surface and wood-frame construction beneath, or wood-frame walls adjacent
or behind, the wood is considered combustible, even though the grill is touching the stucco or tiled
surface, which is non-combustible. In extreme circumstances, the wood could potentially get hot
enough to burn.
ISLAND VENTILATION OPENINGS
A minimum of two ventilation openings are
required to safely dissipate gas vapors if there
is a leak inside your enclosure (island). Three
openings are preferred at left and right sides, as
well as the back of the island.
Upper and lower ventilation openings are
required. The upper openings must total 20
in² [129 cm²] in open area and must be located
within 5” [12.7 cm] of the countertop and
unobstructed. The lower openings must total 10
in² [65 cm²] in open area and must be located 1”
[2.5 cm] or less from the floor. The upper edge of
this lower opening shall be no more than 5” [12.7
cm] above the floor.
Louvered or meshed panels can be used on these
openings to keep rodents and debris out of the
island. The openings in these panels must be 1/8”
[3.2 mm] diameter or greater.
