NON-COMBUSTIBLE OVERHEAD CONSTRUCTION
In certain installations, such as an island located against your home or other structure, or perhaps
a short roof overhang above your grill, a “range-hood” style ventilation unit may be desirable to
direct smoke and grease away from those structures. In these cases, a Hestan outdoor vent hood is
recommended. See table below to select the appropriate vent hood for your grill model. Each vent
hood model was designed with the appropriate width and required air-flow (cfm) for the grill below it.
FOR NON-COMBUSTIBLE LOCATIONS ONLY!! The vent hood is wall-mounted and must NOT
be installed on or next to unprotected combustible construction, and must be covered by a protective
roof to prevent water intrusion. A minimum clearance to vertical combustible material, such as
adjacent walls, is 24” [61 cm] on the sides of the appliance (see below). Duct covers are also available
to conceal the ductwork and wiring above the vent. A GFCI protected branch circuit is required.
Complete installation details are provided with the vent hood.
ALL materials in the island and the countertop must be made of non-
combustible materials. The rear wall, adjacent walls, and overhead
construction must also be made of non-combustible materials. As an example, if you have an
island with a stucco or tiled surface and wood-frame construction beneath, or wood-frame walls
adjacent or behind, the wood is considered combustible, even though the grill is touching the
stucco or tiled surface, which is non-combustible. In extreme circumstances, the wood could
potentially get hot enough to burn.
THE VENT HOOD MUST BE TURNED ON AT ALL TIMES WHEN THE GRILL IS ON.
Construction methods and installation must comply with all local building codes.
