GEARLESS LOCKER 4

Detroit Gearless Locker

The Detroit Gearless Locker allows the ATV to be a true four wheel drive by locking the front differential so

that it delivers power to both front tires at all times.

Important Information

This product is designed for use on ATV’s which are primarily operated at low speeds in deep mud or snow,

where maximum traction from all four tires is desired. It is not intended for ATV riders who will spend most of

their time riding at high speeds or riding on hard ground. When the front differential is in full lock, more effort

is required for steering on concrete and other hard surfaces.

Please read the warranty information before installation and operation. All warranty claims and problems

should be directed to High Lifter Products.

Special Installation Instruction

Installation of this product will require that the ring gear be machined down using a lathe. Only a professional

machine shop should perform this operation. DO NOT USE A GRINDER! High Lifter Product is not

responsible for damaged ring gears or malfunctions due to improper machining or installations. If you

are unsure of your ability to install this product High Lifter can install it for you. Call for arrangements and

fees.

Installation Procedure

The Detroit Gearless Locker is easily installed in the field with two or three hours of labor required. The

procedure is similar to installing a conventional or limited slip differential.

• Caution: It is recommended that safety glasses be worn when installing the product.

• Caution: Read and comply with the manufacturer’s safety warnings and cautions.

• Caution: Do not use heat to disassemble drive axles. To do so can destroy heat treat properties of the

material, weaken or distort axle components.

Note: When referring to the left or right side of the ATV, it will always be from the seated position. Removing front drive shafts from the differential 1. Break loose the front tire lug nuts. Jack-up and block front of ATV until both front tires are off the ground. 2. Remove front tires. 3. Drain gear oil from front differential. 4. Remove all inner fender and propeller shaft covers between differential and engine. 5. Remove the hub nut. 6. Completely remove shock . 7.

6. Remove differential from the ATV. Differential Case Disassembly 1. Remove all cover bolts. 2. Carefully pry the cover off the case using a screwdriver at the pry points. 3. Remove the differential assembly from the differential case.

. Remove bolts connecting ring gear to differential assembly. 5. Remove OEM clutch pack (face cams, cone springs, cam followers, and shim), side gear, and washer.

6. This step requires the ring gear to be milled. Seek the help of a professional machine shop.

7. Take the Gearless Locker out of the box and carefully remove the rubber band holding the Detroit Gearless Locker together. 8. Insert the Gearless Locker into the differential assembly in the manner illustrated in the picture. After the Gearless Locker has been installed into the differential assembly, and carefully remove the side gear and clutch pack with housing. This will expose the cross pen and four holes that the 4 springs will be inserted into.

9. Place the differential assembly back into the differential case. 10. Place other half of the differential case over the assembly and close. Torque: 10mm bolt (36lbf) 8mm bolt (19lbf) Note: Use LockTite on all bolts before they are torqued. When sealing the differential case use a solvent less silicone (It is used for motorcycle snowmobile, watercraft.) Differential Installation 1. Place the differential back into the ATV. 2. Put the propeller shaft back into the differential.

4. Re-attach the lower A-arm and ball joint nut. 5. Place hub nut back on hub. 6. Re-attach the shock. 7. Put wheel back on ATV. Follow steps 1 to 7 for other side. Gear Oil Add gear oil and differential gear additive supplied with the Detroit Gearless Locker. Make sure to use all of the additive.

Installation Test Step 1 With the engine turned off, raise driving axle(s) until all wheels are out of contact with the surface. Place the transmission in gear so that the drive shaft is locked and does not rotate. Step 2 With two people, rotate both wheels forward, as far as possible to lock both wheels. (Both wheels should stop after rotating a short distance.) Step 3 With the right wheel securely held in the forward direction, rotate the left wheel rearward. The left wheel should rotate freely.

For ATV vehicles, when not used in competition of any type for 90 days from the date of delivery to the first user. 2. For ATV vehicles used in competition of any type, for 30 days from the date of delivery to the first user.

OBLIGATIONS UPON TRACTECH TO FURNISH OR INSTALL THE SAME UPON ANY PRODUCTS PREVIOUSLY SOLD AND DELIVERED OR PRODUCTS THEN IN PROCESS, MANUFACTURE OR DISTRIBUTION. LIMITATION OF REMEDIES At TRACTECH’S option, TRACTECH will credit the Buyer’s account for the purchase price of, or repair or replace without charge for materials, any TRACTECH product that failed within the warranty period that is finally determined by TRACTECH to have been defective in material or workmanship.
