INSTRUCTIONS
BRUSH / ROLL-ON & SPRAY-ON
®
BEFORE YOU BEGIN
Read entire directions, warnings and precautions before starting project. The key to a
successful project outcome is preparing the surface thoroughly. Your refinishing project
will require your attention for 2-3 consecutive days.
GENERAL SUPPLIES NEEDED
Have the following on hand before you begin your project:
TIPS FOR SUCCESS
• Careful surface preparation and cleaning is key to a successful outcome.
• Maintain room temperature 70-80°F and humidity below 80%
during application and cure time.
• Read directions, warnings, and precautions before starting project.
• Please allow 2-3 consecutive days to properly complete project.
• Use only #000 grade steel wool or 320 grit wet / dry sandpaper for surface preparation.
• Do not lean against freshly painted surfaces.
• Only finish original surface to ensure a successful finish. Do not refinish exposed metal sinks
or tubs as finish will not adhere properly over time.
• Do any necessary repairs prior to using HOMAX
®
TOUGH AS TILE
®
.
• Dark colored sinks or tubs will require more than 2 coats.
Additional kits / cans of finish may be needed.
• During surface preparation be sure to wear gloves to avoid skin oils transferring to surface.
• Use of bath mats or suction cups will harm surface of Homax Tough As Tile.
• Have an additional small (1") brush available to remove drips and runs if needed.
• Set a timer or alarm to alert when it is time to apply additional coats, see application directions
for advised times.
• After applying, observe surface for several minutes to look for sags which may take a few
minutes to develop.
USE ON
• Ceramic, porcelain, fiberglass, and acrylic composites. Some surfaces may require
specific prep requirements. Reference Surface matrix for best results. If questions
remain, please contact Homax, 1-800-729-9029.
• Do not use on surfaces that will be exposed to flame or very high temperatures, kitchen sinks,
toilet bowl interiors or places continually immersed in water. Also not for hot tubs or stainless
steel applications. Do not apply to stone, concrete, or other aggregate surfaces.
STEP 1 CLEAN & PREP SURFACE
Careful preparation is the key to a flawless finish. Take
your time and follow steps carefully to prepare the surface
for the best finish adhesion. Wear gloves to avoid skin oils
transferring to surface.
1. Repair existing cracks or chips before beginning the surface
preparation. Use Homax Porcelain Chip Fix for most cases.
Please consult product specifications before using.
2. Remove all existing caulk and scrub the areas with
isopropyl alcohol or non oily solvent.
3. Eliminate any mildew from the surface by treating the
surface with a solution of bleach and water or a mildew
remover. Repeat if necessary.
4. Rinse the area thoroughly with water.
5. Scrub the surface with an abrasive pad and abrasive
cleaner to remove all dirt, grease, oil, soap film and hard
water deposits.
6. Rinse the area thoroughly with water. For heavy
duty cleaning to remove rust, hardwater, and
mineral residues, use a hard-water remover per the
manufacturer’s instructions.
7. Scour the entire surface area with #000 grade steel wool
or 320 grit wet / dry sandpaper using a small circular motion. This will allow for abrasion to
occur resulting in proper adhesion. If steel wool has deposited a dark surface on the tub, it
is an indicator that a residue remains. If steel wool will not remove this residue use 320 grit
wet / dry sandpaper to scour this area.
8. Fill clean bucket with (1) gallon warm water and add surface preparation cleaner or TSP
solution, following manufacturer recommendations. Stir to dissolve. Using a sponge, clean
entire surface area. Rinse the area thoroughly with water.
9. Repeat steps 7 & 8, (1) one more time for a total of (2) two cleanings.
10. Dry completely with a clean lint free cloth then wipe entire surface with isopropyl alcohol
using clean cloth and allow to dry.
Be sure that the surface is free of all steel wool fibers or sandpaper residue.
STEP 2 MASK OFF AREA
Using plastic drop cloth, carefully mask off the area surrounding the surface to be painted, to
protect from overspray. Be sure to mask or remove drains and fixtures prior to applying the product.
BRUSH / ROLL-ON FIRST COAT
READ ALL INSTRUCTIONS BEFORE STARTING.
GENTLY stir finish (Do not shake as this will
create unsightly bubbles in finish). Practice
application technique by first applying
to some ceramic tiles stood vertically -
concentrating on avoiding sags. Once
technique is perfected, proceed applying to project.
Brush-on or Roll-on a thin first coat. When rolling, use a shed free 4" roller with ¼" nap
cover (do not use a foam roller!). IT IS VERY IMPORTANT THAT COATS BE APPLIED THIN TO
AVOID SAGS. Do not attempt to get full hide with first coat - thin coats produce
better results than thick coats. Full hide is achieved on light surfaces in 2-3 thin coats
and on dark surfaces in 3 thin coats.
Always maintain a wet edge when painting. Finish dries very quickly and will get sticky
as soon as one (1) minute after applying - do not attempt to paint over previously
painted areas after 2 minutes of application. Have a brush ready during rolling for use
in complex corners and to remove drips. See instruction on removing drips. Between coats,
secure can lid tightly. The unused product must be kept at room temperature while first
coat is curing. MAINTAIN ROOM TEMPERATURE OF 70°-80°F AND HUMIDITY BELOW 80%
DURING APPLICATION AND CURE TIME.
LET FIRST COAT DRY 3 HOURS THEN APPLY SECOND COAT - DO NOT WAIT LONGER
THAN 6 HOURS AFTER APPLYING FIRST COAT. Protect surface from dust and dirt which
may adhere to wet surface.
APPLY SECOND COAT
AFTER FIRST COAT HAS DRIED 3 HOURS, BUT NOT MORE THAN 6 HOURS, gently stir Tough
as Tile and apply a thin second coat using a NEW brush or ¼" nap roller cover. Do not reuse
a cleaned brush/roller as particles will appear on surface. Maintain a wet edge as you brush /
roll. Multiple thin coats result in a better finish than fewer heavy coats. If sags or runs occur,
use a lighter application. Brush out runs and sags within 2 minutes.
WHEN APPLYING A THIRD COAT - wait until second coat has dried 3 hours but not more than
6 hours and use a new brush or roller cover. Follow the same procedure as second coat.
SPRAY-ON FIRST COAT
READ ALL INSTRUCTIONS BEFORE STARTING.
Shake can for 1 minute. Practice application
by first spraying 2 coats onto ceramic tiles
stood vertically. Perfect spray technique by
working to achieve a high-gloss and non-sagging
final finish.
Apply in very thin even coats holding can 8"-10" away from surface. Do not attempt to get
complete hide on first coat.
Start from top of surface and move down as you spray. First coat may not be high gloss. Second
coat should achieve full coverage and high gloss. For dark surfaces, 3 coats may be necessary.
A low-gloss or "orange peel" finish on the second coat is due to too light of a second coat
application (you want application to be heavy enough to flow into glossy surface). Sags will result
from applying to heavy. Perfect technique on practice tiles before finishing tub or sink.
For proper spray, fully depress nozzle actuator. Wipe drips from nozzle periodically with paper
towel. After applying each coat, turn can upside down and spray into scrap cardboard box for
several seconds to clear nozzle and prevent clogs.
Allow first coat to dry 10 minutes before applying second coat. Brush out drips and
sags immediately (finish will begin to dry within 1 minute). If drips / sags are not smoothed
out within 2 minutes, then see directions under "Fixing Drips and Sags."
FIXING DRIPS AND SAGS - Sags are a result of over application of the finish. Drips and
sags can be painted out within 2 minutes of applying. Be diligent to paint out drips and
sags immediately. After 2 minutes, allow drip and sag to partially dry 15 minutes then use a
clean brush dipped in rubbing alcohol to carefully smooth out the drip. Allow to dry 3 hours and
carefully reapply finish over affected area if needed.
APPLY SECOND COAT
SECOND COAT MUST BE APPLIED AFTER FIRST COAT HAS DRIED 10 MINUTES BUT NOT
LONGER THAN 6 HOURS! Apply second coat using the same constant motion and light coverage
spray technique as first coat. Take care to ensure drips or sagging does not occur. Observe
finish closely during application, if second coat is too light, a non-glossy orange peel surface will
appear. Apply a heavier coating to achieve a smooth glossy surface. If applying additional spray
coats, allow 10 minutes to dry between coats and be sure not to apply any coats after 6 hours
from previous applied coat.
Wearing gloves, carefully
clean surface with a sponge.
After you rinse surface with clean
water / and dry it with a paper towel
or chamois, scour the entire surface
with steel wool or sand paper.
Carefully mask and drape
the areas surrounding the
surface, including drains and
plumbing fixtures, with a
plastic drop cloth to protect
from drips or splatter.
Tape a rubber glove over
faucet and shower head to
catch drips.

TROUBLESHOOTING
DRIPPING / SPITTING NOZZLE WHILE SPRAYING - Wipe spray tip clean. Re-shake can for
1 minute. Check for blockage by removing nozzle, wiping clean, and reattach. Make sure can is at
room temperature 70°-80°F. Make sure that the nozzle is pointing away from yourself and others
when reattaching.
FIXING DRIPS AND SAGS - Sags are a result of over application of the finish. Drips and
sags can be painted out within 2 minutes of applying. Be diligent to paint out drips and sags
immediately. After 2 minutes, allow drip or sag to partially dry 15 minutes then use a clean brush
dipped in rubbing alcohol to carefully smooth out the drip. Allow to dry 3 hours and carefully
reapply finish over affected area if needed.
COVERING A DARK COLOR - May require 3 coats. Follow directions in appropriate section.
NO GLOSS FINISH - For spray application, an "orange peel" or lack of gloss, is likely due to too
light of a final coat. Apply heavy enough for full film on surface to flow together to form a gloss
surface use care to avoid sags.
High humidity during cure time will also dull the surface, lower the humidity to below 80% at 70-80° F.
OVERSPRAY - Clean up with lacquer thinner. Do not use paint thinner.
6 HOURS PAST WITHOUT APPLYING SECOND COAT - Do not attempt to apply a second/
additional coats if it has been more than 6 hours since the previous coat was applied -
immediately call customer service for additional instructions, 1-800-729-9029.
