revised 06/27/07 Studio Guesthouse Assembly Manual Please read through the entire manual before starting! Note: It is very important that you have a level site for the garden building. If you have purchased the optional floor, a level crushed-stone pad is recommended.
Hardware & Fasteners The following fasteners are included with your kit. However, you will find the assembly process to proceed much faster when using air powered tools and fasteners. When replacing hand fasteners with air powered fasteners, always use a fastener equivalent.

Optional Floor Assembly If you did not purchase the optional floor, please proceed to page 8. See drawings on previous page for measurements. Step 1: Remove exterior wrapping, cut metal bands, and remove top plywood sheet as shown. Step 2: Lay out two 8’ and two 4’ pressure treated 2”x4” floor plates, mark floor joists 16” on center using tape measure and square as shown.
Step 3: Lay out floor as shown. Note: See attached drawing for appropriate measurements. Step 4: Attach bandboard to floor joists using two 3” galvanized nails per joist. Make sure top of joists are flush with top of bandboard. Step 5: Attach outside bandboard joists together as shown. Step 6: Make sure floor is square. Step 7: Layout plywood floor Floor is square when diagonal pieces as shown. measurements are equal.
Bottom Wall Plate Layout for Units without floor If you purchased the optional floor, please proceed to page 9. Step A: Measure a square pad at 92”x144” and snap lines as shown. Make sure layout is precisely square. Pad is square when diagonal measurements are the same. Step B: Lay out 6’ pressure treated bottom plates as shown. Step C: Mark and cut bottom plates to fit. Step D: It is recommended put a layer of clear silicone sealer under bottom plates. Step E: Make sure bottom plate layout is square.

Back Wall Layout & Assembly See drawings on previous page for measurements. Step 9: Layout top and bottom wall plates (top plate is a double wall plate), measure and mark at 16” on center as shown. Step 10: Layout 79”-2”x4” wall studs and fasten to top and bottom plates at marks using two 3” nails per stud as shown. Note: It is very important to align top of studs flush with top of wall plate.

Step 32: Center remaining door header stud on siding splice and fasten. Step 33: Take remaining 11-3/4”x4’ door header siding piece and mark to fit as shown. Step 34: Cut siding piece to fit using mark and install as shown. Step 36: Lift and set wall repeating steps from back wall. Step 35: Install remaining siding pieces. Step 37: Fasten wall bottom plate to floor and siding to floor repeating previous steps.

Side Wall Layout & Assembly Note: This wall can be used for either side wall. See drawings on previous page for correct measurements. Rafter Assembly Step 53: Layout two rafters and align as shown. Incorrect, birds mouth should be at bottom end of rafter. Incorrect, rafter splice should fit tightly together. Note: There are four rafters withouth birds mouth cutouts, these rafters will be used for the gable overhangs. Step 54: First assemble two end rafters by fastening one rafter gusset to rafters using twelve 2” nails as shown.
Rafter Installation Step 56: Mark off wall every 2 ft. on center. Step 57: Install first end rafter making sure gusset is facing inside. Keep rafter flush with edge of gable wall (outside surface of siding). Make sure you are installing an end rafter with only one gusset. Step 58: After rafter is aligned with edge of wall and edge of soffit piece, fasten soffit to rafter and tonail rafter into top of wall. Step 59: Install remaining rafters by aligning center of rafter with 2 ft. marks.
Gable Siding Installation 32” 27-1/2” Step 60: Mark siding 8” from top of wall on both ends of gable wall and snap a chalk line as shown. Step 61: Starting with overlap at front, lay out gable siding pieces as shown. Note: There is a left and right for end gable siding pieces. Step 62: Install first gable siding piece, keeping piece aligned at ends and with chalk lines as shown. Note: Siding grooves should also align with grooves on wall.
OSB Roof Sheeting Installation Step 65: Remove one 4’x8’, one 4’x4’, one 15-7/8”x8’, and 15-7/8”x4’ OSB roof sheet from package. Step 66: Install first full sheet of OSB keeping sheet centered on middle of rafter and flush with bottom of rafter. Step 67: Fasten roof sheet to rafter using 2-1/4” nails spaced 8” apart as shown. Step 69: Install remaining OSB pieces and repeat on back side. Note: Make sure to stagger OSB splices.
Gable Overhang Assembly & Installation Step 71: Remove gable overhang See step 72 below... pieces from package. White plywood goes on bottom, OSB goes on top. Step 72: Assemble gable overhang keeping OSB flush at bottom and edges. Fasten OSB to rafters using 2-1/4” nails spaced 8” apart. Step 73: Gable overhang ready for installation. Step 74e: Fasten overhang into end rafter using 3” galvanized nails. Step 76: Toe nail front and back overhangs together as shown. Step 77: Install bottom of gable overhang, keeping painted side down as shown. Repeat steps on opposite gable wall.
Fascia Installation Step 78: Remove gable fascia pieces from package. Step 79: Install gable fascia using 2” trim nails. Make sure fascia is aligned properly at end of rafter and top of OSB roof sheeting. Step 80: Install back gable fascia as shown. Repeat steps on opposite gable wall. Door Trim Installation Step 83: Remove door trim materials from package. Corner Trim Installation 77-1/4” 80” Step 92: Remove corner trim from package. Step 93: Install 80” corner trim piece on front using 2” nails as shown. Step 94: Install 77-1/4” corner trim piece on side as shown. Window & Window Trim Installation Step 95: Install windows as shown using 1” pan head screws. It is strongly recommended to seal behind windows with clear silicone caulk. Step 96: Layout window trim Step 97: First install side window trim keeping flush with window at pieces as shown.
Step 98: Install top and bottom window trim keeping short points flush with side trim. Step 99: Repeat previous steps on all windows. Install Window Shutters Step 100: Install window shutters using 1-1/2” red screws as shown. Note: Shutters can be painted to suit your taste. Gable Vent Installation Step 101: Install wooden gable vents using trim nails as shown. Note: Vents should be slanted towards ground.
Flower Box Assembly & Installation Fasteners Used for Flower Box Assembly & Installation: White Washer Head 1-1/2” Screws, Dark Green Color Code Screw Pattern Step 102: Layout flower box piec- Step 103: Attach back of flower box to side using 2 screws as shown. es as shown. Note: Make sure to keep edges flush. Door Installation Step 109: Install left door using 2” black hinge screws. Note: Space rafter ties evenly throughout building. Hurricane Clip Installation Step 124: Install hurricane clips on each rafter as shown. Note: It is very important to install the hurricane clips on each rafter, this greatly increases the strength of the roof system. Flower Hook Installation Step 125: Install flower pot hooks where desired.
Flower Box Trim Installation Step 126: Install flower box trim pieces as shown using 2” trim nails (you will need to bend or cut nails). Note: This step is necessary only for cosmetic reasons (eg. for painting flower box a different color). Door Stop Installation Step 127: Install door stop as shown.
Congratulations... ... your Studio is now ready for shingle application. Note: Follow shingle manufacturer’s application recommendations.
