• Battery charging: The IMA is recharging the battery pack, using energy from vehicle
momentum/thegasolineengine.Theamountofrechargeisindicatedbytheilluminationof
greencoloredbarsontheleftsideofthedisplay.Whenmorebarsareilluminated,thebattery
isbeingrechargedatahigherrate.
• Inactive: No bars illuminated. Note that since the IMA motor/generator will generate
electricity whenever it is turning, slow charging can take place even when no bars are
illuminated.Therateofchargingwilldependonhowmanyotheraccessoriesareturnedon.
ThebatteryStateofChargebargraphdisplayrepresentsthecurrentstateofIMAbattery
charge. The indicator is operated by the Battery Condition Monitor module (BCM), which
constantlycalculatesthebatterystateofcharge.
The BCM maintainsthe IMAbatterystate of charge ina range of20%to80%, which
optimizesbatterylife. It never allows the batteryto reach 100% chargeor 100% discharge.
WhentheBCMhasdeterminedthatthebatteryshouldnotbechargedanymore,thedisplay
showsfullcharge.WhentheBCMwillnotlettheIMAbatterydischargeanyfurther,thedisplayindicates
azerocharge.Thedisplayprovidesthedriverinformationabouttheamountofelectricalassistavailableat
anytime.
The display is not linear. Aswithmany fuellevelgauges,thetophalfofthedisplayrangecovers
considerablymorethanhalfthecapacityrange.
Theupshiftindicatorwillilluminatewhenbetterfueleconomycanbeachievedbyshifting
uptoahighergear.
The downshiftindicator willilluminatewhentheInsightis unabletomaintainthecurrent
speed, even withfull assist. This lightwill sometimes illuminate when climbing steephills at
highwayspeeds.Whendrivinginlesshillyareas,thislightmayneverilluminateatall.
Odometer/TripMeter/FuelEfficiencyMeter
In the center of the instrument display, below the digital speedometer display, is the combination
odometer/fueleconomymeter.
Attheleftsideofthisdisplay,averagefueleconomyisshown.Thisaverageisupdated
onceperminute.Totherightofthisaverage,istheodometer/tripdistancedisplay.The
drivercanselectthelifetimeodometerforthevehicle,orswitchbetweenthreeresettable
tripmeters:"TripA","TripB"or"segment".Theaveragemileagedisplayalwaysshows
the average for the distance that is selected. That is, if trip meterA is selected, the average mileage is
shown for that trip. "Segment" mode is toggled on and off by touching the FCD button. The current
segment is reset by pressing and holding the FCD button while in "Segment" mode. The normal mode
displaycanbeswitchedbetweentheodometerandthetwotripmetersbypressingtheTripbutton.
At the lower portion of the display, a bar graph shows the
instantaneous fuel economy, which changes in real time based on the
amountoffuelthatthefuelinjectorsarecurrentlydelivering,andbased
onthecurrentspeed.
